Join me for a little Sunday drive in my completely restored 1936 Ford sedan. Listen to its flathead V8 sing, uninterrupted by talking or music. Aside from a 12-volt electrical system, turn signals, a 1939 transmission, 1937 steering box and slightly later-model engine the car is completely stock, retaining mainstay Ford features of the era like a solid front axle, torque-tube drivetrain, front and rear transverse leaf springs as well as mechanical brakes (with floaters). The car runs and drives beautifully, better than you’d ever expect an 80-plus-year-old vehicle to.
If you’re curious, here are the engine specs:
• Factory-relieved 59L block
• Stock 59-AB heads
• Bored 0.080” beyond 3 3/16”
• Stock 3 ¾” crankshaft
• 251 cubic inches
• Stock intake manifold
• Holley 2100 carburetor with stock 8BA jetting and power valve
• Stock fuel pump with electric back up
• Stock 1946 Ford camshaft with adjustable lifters
• Stock “crab-style” distributor
• Red’s headers
• Dual exhaust system WITHOUT mufflers

You are right. I believe that is due to all the innovation that was happening between all the automakers as they competed for the limited new car sales of the Great Depression. Ford had to innovate and improve his designs to keep up with the competition. Unlike the era of the Model T, which changed minimally over its lifetime... now Ford was in a situation where each year's car had to be an improvement over last years. And look what happened!

When I was 15 1/2 , back in 1951, I started car shopping and found a '36 Three Window Coupe. My dad said, "no, no, no, because it had mechanical brakes. I ended up with a '40 Merc 4-door which I drove up and down the driveway until my 16th b/d when I was released on the public. Fun, Fun, Fun!!

No. Send it to the Netherlands. My dad used to have one in the early sixties. Even then it was already considered a very old car. But the garage he bought it from, for next to nothing, used it only for weddings and funerals and kept it hidden from the Germans during the war. He needed a cheap, but roomy and powerful, beast for pulling a trailer full of paint cans and transporting at least five men all through the country for his job as an electricity mast painter. Drove like a tank and built like it as well. This sound really brings back memories.

@@craigcole5497 Hi Craig, I grew up on a farm near Kruger National Park, South Africa. We had an old ex-army Ford V8 3-ton truck and a 1947 Ford Super Delux sedan. From my earliest memories, I fell in love with the Flathead V8 engine - the sound absolutely moved me then and still does now. I learned to drive in the old Ford V8 3-ton truck when I was about 11 or 12 years old. It has been my life-long dream to buy an old Flathead Ford V8, but haven't turned it into a reality, so well done to you and thanks again for sharing!

Here in Argentina they were known as "La coupecita". They were used for races over long distances called "Turismo carretera". Beautiful sound of that Flathead. Greetings from Argentina.

the turn signal has a better sound than the GM turn signals from the 80s and iam a GM guy, but also love Fords. Great video, no music no non sense just traight to the point.

My GM 1956 Holden turn signals make a very similar noise and they were fitted standard from new and self cancel.

In 1958 I had a 1948 "Prefect" English Ford that was a miniature of this Ford. It had 4 doors, 3 speed "on the floor" with a flat head 4 cylinder engine. It had the "herringbone front grill & the slant back. I enjoyed the crank out windshield. It got almost 40 mph. We couldn't afford photos & the only known photo I have was taken with a "Brownie" camera with my grandmother next to it. I had it until 1963. I replaced it with my favorite vehicle of all times, a 1955 Desoto.

It's a RIOT to drive. And despite how "crude" it is compared to modern vehicles, it's still smooth, comfortable and reasonably quick. Amazing for something going on 90 years old.

We had the same car in the UK, in right hand drive form, of course. It was relaunched in 1947 with a larger 3622cc engine based on the old one, but redesigned by Ford of Dagenham. It also had a steering column gear change. 212,155 were sold.

Get one! The good news is they seem to be getting less and less popular (and therefore cheaper) as generations change. You should be able to find a decent example for a reasonable amount of money, especially if you don't have to have a holy-grail 1932 or '34 Ford.

Just love all about this, especially the sympathetic gear changing using two distinct movements., pausing in neutral to give the synchro a chance. I hate to see gearchanges as one harsh movement on any old car.

You know the trick! Even with the upgraded synchronizer assembly from late-1939 and up, you still have to be deliberate and gentle. Do that, and it'll last forever and never crunch.

Funny you bring that up! Perhaps against better judgement, I acquired a second project car about three months ago. Predictably, it's another old Ford, though not quite as early as this one. The car in question is a 1951 Crestliner, a two-door (Tudor in Ford parlance) sedan with two-tone paint and a vinyl-covered roof. The plan is to produce a series of videos chronicling the restoration process. Stay tuned!

Craig Cole would love to see that! My parents had a ‘51 cream color Tudor Crestliner V8! There was a thick chrome V8 emblem on it’s side. We were almost side-swiped by a truck. When we got home the emblem was scratched!

My Dad was one of the Founders of The Early Ford V8 Club of America. I can still remember going to one of those early meetings. I believe they were held in the Auto Shop at San Leandro High School. Dad tried to give me a 1939 Deluxe four door sedan that had belonged to a local Mailman named Frank. Problem was it had been in a flood so lots of rust in the floor pan. I was like 9 years old. I decided because of the floor problem to let it go and hold out for a better one down the road. Bonk! So in High School he gave me his 1941 Ford Pickup. We took it all apart in the back yard with plans to start restoring it. (all it really needed was a motor rebuild and paint, was damn near perfect when he got it.) Unfortunately that was also the year I was introduced to Partying on booze and pot so I had no money to put into it. (around 1972/73) Needless to say he took it back. It was sort of mine for like four weeks and I got as far as scrapping all the muck from the rear axle. I'll never forget the joy of driving his old Fords. The sweet sound of a well tuned Early V8, and looking over the hood as it follows the way you point it.Those were the days! Sorry I let ya down Dad.

Here's a fun fact. Flathead V8 engines or "engines of yesterday" did not had to require a lot of stress, to power an average car. But engines of today they had to put so much stress by revving higher and working harder and use up more gas, I'm assuming, just to do the same job. So it didn't had it easy.

Yes I too am amazed how quickly the models progressed.Technology in general just advances so quickly.I think it was Wilbur Wright of the Wright Brothers who lived until 1946 and saw the dawn of the jet age.I bet he never imagined his invention would be used to kill so many people.

Well at 80 years of age. I drove a lot of these cars my first car was a 1938 Ford CPE..85 horse...and I had built and Raced 5 other Ford Flatheads...in the early 60" s..great Video.. My Brother just restored a 1937 sedan. Stock car with a 100 horse engine...a nice thing to see. His first car was a 1936 Ford cpe

The Ford Flathead V-8 was the car of choice for depression era bootleggers and bank robbers. The Ford V-8 led to teenager building Jalopies from post war junk yard cars which led to street rods which led to the factory muscle car era.

Way stronger than the cars of today; for all the superlatives on the quarter and skidpan a modern car would be torn to shreds almost overnight if it had to drive the roads this old Ford was built for.

Thanks for watching! I'm running a slightly later transmission with the replaceable blocker rings so you can shift just a little faster, but you've still got to go slow or it will grind.

THese were really among the first cars that were seriously used for bootleggin through the Smokie Mountains by moonshiners. Ford's new V8 offered performance for regular people on a low-middle class income that was really never attainable for the price before. So these cars were the foundation of NASCAR.

My grandpa and his best friend switched out the manual for a “3 on the tree” back in the 50’s for his buddies mother. In 2006 his best friend surprised him with the car, my grandpa had it restored, and now my buddies grandkid owns it.. wish I knew who he was

The hub is also the headlight switch. One click right turns on the parking lights, one click left of center is for the low beams and two clicks left is for the high beams.

They're really not that bad. Yes, you still have to be careful, but I think they work just as well as hydraulic brakes from the same time period. Mechanical brakes got a really bad rap. When they're 80-plus years old, with bad bushings, worn-out clevises or pins and oil-soaked linings you're never going to stop well -- or in a straight line. But when you rebuild everything, arc the shoes to match the drums and properly adjust them, they work surprisingly well.

In 1967 in New Zealand my friends and I bought 3 of this model 1936 V8 we drove them to my uncle's farm and played demolition derby with the 3 1936 fords until all 3 were damaged beyond repair, we left them next to a tree and caught the train back home. The 3 1936 Ford V8s cost a total of $17 two were $6 each the other $5 the guy selling them had another 29 cars in his car yard for sale some were 1932 and 1934 Ford V8s but these were more expensive at $8/$10 each . Watching this video now makes me cry thinking what we did back in 1967 when aged 19 years old.

There's no sound quite as sweet as a flathead to us old timers!! I've owned many flatheads since the 1960s, and still have a 37 standard fordor flatback undergoing restoration and a tidy 39 deluxe sedan.

As low as that car is geared it wouldn't hurt a thing to shift from 1st to 3rd or stay in 1st and 2nd very briefly to get to 3rd quickly. Dad's '63 F-100 is like that with a 3.89:1 ratio rear end. Great video great car! I also recommend Amsoil 10W30 Z-rod oil as it has high zinc and is designed for cars like yours.

I like that there's no talking or music. Wish other vid uploaders would realize that. Great vid on car and I'm glad you actually showed it's power. can't believe they had a pretty fast V8 back then, no wonder Bonnie and Clyde liked the Ford Flathead V8s. Powerful.

The original Ford Flathead V8, one of the first cars with sufficient power to keep up with modern highway speeds. Also a favorite get away car with some criminals in the 1930's who wanted to get away from the police. Since this car was able to go faster than most cars in the 1930's.

An earlier version of the Ford V8 kept infamous criminals Bonny and Clyde ahead of the law for a long time. It seems Clyde even wrote to Henry Ford praising his car. The shot up car is preserved in a Casino (rightly) in the US

TheBandana1969 That car still ran. The legit owner, a strong willed woman, came down to claim it, and after a court fight, DROVE it some 60 miles to a truck depot to have it shipped back to Kansas. In June in Louisiana, full of blood and brains.
