1938 Zenith 6S249 Antique Radio Repair

Repair of this very interesting chairside radio. These were meant to go beside a table, but never sold in huge numbers. They were tied to a single chair or couch with limited ease of use from the other side, and didn't function as very good tables with the radio dial blocking the top.

I was surprised that Zenith used such a small power transformer in that set. I wonder if the larger transformers used back then didn’t have to be such monsters in size?

Nice job Adam however I would like to have seen that new drive belt. I restored a similar but multi-band console Zenith and the belt I got is a urethane "O"ring and it should last for 100 years. Did you install a strain relief, fuse and X1-Y2 ac line bypass safety caps? I repainted the backer plate for the dial with bright white paint and since it is a multi band colored dial I used colored LEDs. I made new diffusers next to the lamps out of a milk jug. You are right that this is a great project radio because it has a lot of real estate and its performance is very satisfying. I am looking forward to your next project.

Nice recap...I'd consider fusing both sides of the line. If that is like my 6s238 it uses and uses a rectifier with cathode (6X5) these tend to get heater to cathode shorts that will fry the power transformer in short order

At 3:00, those CAPs look original to me. Since this is a tube radio, did you face the foil-side of the paper CAPs facing in the correct orientation? It does make a difference! Especially if your trying to keep any strain noise. Did you replace that OLD electrolytic? It's only a latter of time for that to fail. --- Where do you get your belts from?
