Continuing the1939 Hudson Terraplane Rat Rod build, I make further progress with finding the best position for the 351 Cleveland engine. I cut out the firewall, remove parts of a frame crossmember and struggle to find enough space for a radiator!

Brother, you are so far ahead of channel's that are 50 times the size of your, wonderful creation. Production quality. The way you explain just what you are doing. I'm sure that being forced into it out of necessity. I'm absolutely positive that you don't have the same access to parts as most of the world. I think you are genius. P.S. I started looking for Hudson pickups here in the states. I found exactly zero for sale that weren't complete scrap and rust.
@ratrodsafrica
@ratrodsafrica Жыл бұрын
Thanks Charles! Yes, we dont have the same access to parts. Well, we can import it, but taxes and duties makes it very expensive, even via Amazon. The upside of that is that you learn to become innovative and make a plan!

In relation to the ignition key, I had a 1929 pontiac that had a mechanical lockout integrated into the ignition barrel that ran down to the gear selector. When you turned off the ignition it locked the selector into neutral as an anti theft device. Also you could consider running two narrow radiators in a V formation in the cowl.

exact my thought, 2 small radiators in V. much easier and cheaper.

That Ignition lock is a Bosh style anti theft device, we had to install these when cars were imported that had no steering column or gearlever lock back in the day. That Lock made the ignition wiring tamperproof.

I like your pulley system mounted on the 5 degree "I-Beam". In the states they go by several names from chain hoist, coffin hoist, etc. Work great for your needs and usage alone in the shop. I am jealous of your tee shirt and jeans as when winter North of the equator, it is summer South of the line. It is all I can do to sit warm in my garage as it is 1 degree F high temperature today or -17.5 degrees C. No "Flip-Flop" shoes today! Oh my, that poor little Isuzu never new that when it grew up it would become a Hudson! Also, as a thought because I know you are thinking all the time about the build, but stronger crossmembers near the engine (Perhaps Bolt In) and one under the center would stiffen the chassis for the Ford 351 engine and it may twist somewhat if you get on pavement while the rear drive tires get traction. Just a thought Darn-it, I was hoping for a "U-Shaped" custom radiator! DK, Omaha NE.

Yeah that's cool the new radiator should be big enough to cool your engine. If you can find an electric water pump their alot shorter than the pulley pump then you could run your alternator from your crank pulley. It's going to look pretty nice with a newer fire wall now it's all down hill from there LoL.looks like you brought out some more blue paint on the door there too.take care. Div.

I now have plasma-envy, Diff. I went from a brilliant Hypertherm in our last workshop that had 3-phase to the worlds shonkiest single-phase chinese pos plasma cutter here now. It has the duty cycle of toilet paper. You spend longer waiting for it to regain its cool than you would with the middle aged woman ahead of you in a queue who wants to speak to a manager. I also lolled a little at you cleaning the cross-member before cutting it off & chucking it in the bin. :-) Snazzy work as always.

Coming together nicely Div, enjoy the trials and tribulations. I tried to call out to you about the cab cross member being too small, but I guess you didn't hear me - I'm in Oz. The old ignition switch has an armoured cable that originally joined to the back of the coil. I believe it was an anti theft design so you couldn't hot wire the car. The '39-'47 Dodge trucks had a similar arrangement.

The heavy cable protects the wiring from the switch to the coil, as an anti theft measure. It makes it tough to "hot wire." It wasn't unique to Hudson; Buick used it, too, and maybe it was common. My cousin, who has been a Hudson guy for years, just told me about it this month.

Hudson used really good steel for their sheet metal, it held up really well. Hudson's in general were "built like brick shithouses" as we say. No idea what the mechanical cable in the ignition switch was for but my best educated guess is that it was there to lock out the starter switch underneath the gas pedal so you didn't grind the starter when you floored it. Old Plymouths and Packards had something similar but a different way of going about it
