On this episode of HOT ROD Unlimited, we get a closer look a Ridler Award winner! At the 2013 Detroit Autorama, eight cars were chosen to compete for the prestigious Ridler Award. The winner was Ron Cizek's 1940 Ford, "Checkered Past", built by Andy Leach at CAL Automotive Creations. Andy and Ron invited us out to Bennington, Nebraska to get a closer look at the supercharged, flathead-powered Checkered Past, and meet some of the talented fabricators who made it possible. We take the car on its first street drive, and stop by a local car cruise to see what the enthusiast scene is all about in Bennington. Andy also takes us through the CAL Creations shop to give us a sneak peek at some of the current projects, including a '71 'Cuda and a land speed racing car.

i used to have a 1987 Buick Grand National i used to daily drive for 10 years in Indiana in the elements including the snow. I sold it when it reached 232,000 miles. I used to get yelled at for driving it in bad weather and i had other vehicles i could have driven.I loved the car so much i couldnt stop driving it,collectors item or not. I still got 4000 more than i paid for it even with the 200,000 additional miles. Cars are meat to be driven.

Beautiful work & craftsmanship! This is a car channel, to be watched for the automotive content, not drool over the host. I can enjoy the cars w/o worrying about the host's looks. She's enthusiastic and respectful (notice her hands behind her back as she looks over the cars?), I can appreciate that.

I saw this exact car in the Goodguys Columbus Show in Ohio, and it is nothing like it is in this video. You have to see it in person to truly capture its beauty. Truly astounding.

I believe that its all the little details that make it so cool, certainly worthy of the award. I'm impressed that they drive it around though, over gravel and grass and well. I don't think I could do that with such an immaculate car.

I HAVE seen this car going down the road,got pictures to prove it.I talked to Andy in Columbus last year @ GG event.SUPER nice guy.As soon as I hit the lottery he's getting my 64' Belair.Bob Thrash even owned a twin to my 64' at one time.

I agree with you 100%. I have a car that is being built at Hot Rods by Dean. It will be debuted in Pomona. For the first year it will not be driven, while it is on tour. After that it will be driven by the open course events and the Silver State classic open road race in Nevada. I will never sell the car. But it will definitely be driven as much as possible. I do you own a car that is essentially a model. Because it is a 1968 Super Stock Hemi Barracuda. It is used for drag racing.

I'm a bit surprised the guy who did the wiring got no mention, Jared Zimmerman. He left his own show ("Car Fix" with Lou Santiago, the original "Muscle Car" host) to do that tedious task, & CF's episode 16 (3/30/13) is mostly devoted to that bit & an awesome tour of some other details, like the machined bolt heads, all of 'em unique to this ride! Amazing work, & a LOT of it. Congrats to all involved in creating this beauty, just wish they'd floored that flathead in this vid, just once!!! :\

Around $15k+, *if* you could get a bit of Charlie Hutton's time AND have most of the prep work (filler, sanding, primer, sanding, more sanding, etc.) already done, so all Charlie would have to do is inspect it to be certain it's right, then spray & sand, spray & sand, then spray & polish, for days... Also, depends on the type of paint you want, some of it is also very costly.

To shoot paint, just point a gun, not much. The prep work? Couple of grand plus. Prep work is where good paints lives and dies.

Awesome job and well done on the award. Its sad people can't look at a car and appreciate what has been done to it even if its not to there liking. To me there not car people at all. All there able to do is sit there and bag it out but have no chance of doing anything close to it
