Hudson Oldsmobile 1940 was actually the first year for fully automatic Hydramatic. The units used in 1938 were semi automatic. The Custom Cruiser was still considered series 90 after 1940….that’s where 88 and 98 came from… the 2nd number was how many cylinders.

My friend let me store his 1941 Oldsmobile at my house while he reshingled his roof. It was a hydromatic and a gem to drive. He even allowed me to use it for a wedding. I got to chauffer the bride and groom. That was so cool. Scenareo 1: 1940 Olds 90.

The Hydra-matic worked pretty well, I've ridden in GM cars of that era with the early automatics, and they automatically shift pretty smoothly. I think they were just two speed if I remember correctly.... Thanks for covering this forgotten classic Jay! 😊

@@What.its.like. - If memory serves, the Hydramatic was a 4-spd. from the start, released as a 1940 option. The 2-spd. job that Chuck mentioned was a semiautomatic planetary unit released in ‘37 which still had a clutch. (IMO, what was the point?!) The Hydramatic had fluid coupling instead of a torque converter, but it had a very low first gear so it still had a respectable launch. My first exposure to one was in a ‘49 Olds 88. It worked well, and the new OHV V8 was a joy.
@jamesbosworth4191

It had 4 speeds. Chrysler Fluid Drive, despite having 4 speeds, was normally driven as a 2 speed.
@jamesbosworth4191
@jamesbosworth4191 6 ай бұрын
@@Clyde-2055 The semi-automatic did have 4 speeds, but it operated as such: In Drive, it started out in 1st, then shifted to 3rd, then 4th. In Lo, it started in 1st and only shifted to 2nd, but because of the big gap of 1st to 3rd in Drive, many folks would start out in Lo, then later manually shift to Drive.

This series Olds had the Torpedo body, used in various GM divisions up to and even after the war. Chevy did not get its own version for 40, but an A body torpedo was developed for 41. The Olds used the C body version, as did the top line Pontiac, Buick Super + Roadmaster, LaSalle (52) and Cadillac (62). Given those choices, the Pontia was probably the bargain - stylish new body, not too much more than a Chevy - Pontiac maintained this value proposition for many years, most notably with the Bonneville. Anyway, the torpedo was a much more modern body and huge hit as well as predictive of body development for the industry. Really though, rather than a one year model, this was move upmarket for Olds, and, with a bit of name variation, the 90 (Series 90, 8 cylinders) was essentially the first 98. A little hard to appreciate on this example :) WYR 1) the Olds, 2) No contest, the 120.

1940 was a big year for the industry, and the year of the upgraded car for GM - a new Special DeLuxe for Chevy, C body Pontiacs, Oldsmobiles, and the new Series 52 LaSalle, which moved them all upmarket, and the Hydramatic transmission. At Buick, the Special was given more chrome, so it looked like the hot Century instead of a Plain-Jane. Great looking cars.

I was watching an episode of The Highway Patrol and one of the characters was driving a 41 Oldsmobile Two door coupe,the front end styling looked like to me something Nash,or Packard not so much something from GM,or Olds.They smacked up the left side of the front end,which I thought was a shame,seeing that is was a short model year, since they stopped car production for war or weapons production.There are some surviving 41 Oldsmobiles,and I hope to see one in person,the 41 Olds to me has a pretty interesting front end.

The American sales catalogue for 1940 Olds doesn't mention the Hydramatic, as General Motors were uncertain at the time of printing whether they were in fact going to introduce the Hydramatic in 1940. The Cadillac did not get it till 1941. But strange as it was the Canadian sales catalogue for 1940 Olds has a full page introducing the Hydramatic.

You do a great job but the state of that vehicle sucked. I'd rather see no vehicle than one that is in that bad of condition. Could not finish video.

Like to show cars in all conditions sometimes it’s cool to see what these cars would look like aged =)

@@What.its.like. Cannot see eye to eye on this one. If I wanted to see broken down interiors of old vehicles I can go bum around the junk yard. Just gonna skip the videos of the bad ones.
