On "My Car Story" we're in the Suburbs of Chicago on 9-14-16.
We're looking at a 1942 Cadillac Series 62 2 Door Coupe Fastback.
The 1942 Cadillac was manufactured in October 1941 just a few weeks before America’s entry into World War II. The war halted production in February 1942. The division turned out tanks, aircraft engines, and munitions until V-J day in 1945. On December, 31st 1941 Washington DC issued “Black Out” orders to Cadillac and the rest of the industry that no car would be delivered with stainless steel or chrome trim.
Cadillac built 16,511 cars for 1942, however only about 500 Series 62 2 Door Coupes, and this one as you can see has all the chrome.
The Cadillac Series 62, called the “Sixty Two“ boasted a new “ Fastback “ Coupe, and is easily identified by its longer rear side windows and bullet-shape fenders.
The engine is a V8 346 CI, 150 HP L-Head motor.
The car's Owners are Art & Marge Swanson. Art & Marge shares their passion for the 1940’s Cadillacs body style and they both enjoy sharing their cars at the many car shows they attend.

You did the motoring industry proud when you saved this classic from the scrapyard. An incredibly stylish vehicle. Congratulations!

I restore old cars myself. I can't imagine the time it took to run down all the parts for a 76 year old car. Just the chrome parts alone would of been impossible to find. I can't thank you enough for bringing a piece of history back to life. Thank you.

Lovely car. Lovely guy. I am so envious. Fascinating for us in the UK to see such a modern looking passenger car was available to Americans in what, to us, was the middle of WWII. Thanks for sharing.

Lauren Bacall was behind the wheel of one of the 1942 beauties when she starred with Humphrey Bogart in "The Big Sleep." It was just seen briefly but the big "fender extensions" into the doors are unmistakable.

Why don't you drive this terrific cars? It's very interesting. In Russia we've never seen such cars. They are so beautiful. (Sorry for my English).

1942 was the first year for GM bodies where the front fenders were blended back into the front doors; this was picked up and continued post-war 1946-48 and in 1949 the blending into the body was complete.

I remember my dad's first car after returning from the war was a black '41 Cadillac Model 62 - almost exactly like this one. I recall one of the quirks was the turn signal: Pull down for a right turn and up for left. (Maybe my dad just got the wire crossed?) At one point he had to mill the heads and got more compression. MAN! That car could really go! Mom enjoyed driving it, too. When getting gas, she enjoyed fooling with the attendant to find the gas cap. :-) When I would be kneeling in the passenger seat, her arm would always come up to keep me in the seat when she was braking. Thanks for the memories.

Those colours go together beautifully. And what a beautiful streamliner look. Just can’t say enough about the jewelry/ornamentation and crests then you used to put on the vehicles. So amazing.

Don’t heckle me, or make fun. I just discovered how beautiful 40’s Cadillacs are. My aunt had a white ‘59 which to a 4 year old was the coolest car ever. My grandfather and another aunt drove 1960’s Continentals, it was always a treat for a little boy to open and close those huge rear doors. I could sit and stare at those Lincoln’s forever because, at the time, they were the most beautiful cars on the road. Later, my grandpa had Continental Marks all through the 70’s until he retired from Ford. I remember, being the wound up grade schooler I was, when he came to pick me up for my first airplane flight, I just knew the plane was going to crash, and as we drove away, me in the backseat, that the last time I saw my house, would be through the oval window of a Lincoln, LOL. Anyway, these 40’s Cadillacs are just pure art. The lines are just beautiful. The fast back silhouette is just sexy. You just don’t see these on the road, you might see an oversized, very rounded 50’s example, but these are very memorable.

I am glad he saved this fine example. The look of it puts modern Cadillacs to shame. Thanks for posting.
