A true shelf stable food journey, this incredibly advanced ration used by British recon in Burma 76 years ago truly stood the test of time. A rare look at what is pretty much the British K Ration - and easily the most innovative and pioneering of individual rations for WW2.
I saved most of the leftovers for my own personal display, but did gift the extra tea can to someone who is currently selling it. More information on that below in a shop link.

I love the fact that Steve opens these, records and tries out the contents. It is tempting to think of it as something that should be in a Museum but I'm inclined to suggest that there are plenty such examples in Museums all over the world and that it's far more rare to see the contents, nevermind try it out and therefore I'd argue that Steve has made an Audio/Visual museum for us all, not to state the obvious intentionally.
@rebeccahayes6873

He usually also tries to buy two of every ration, especially older ones like this, so he can donate the other one to a museum!
@berryreading4809
@berryreading4809 Жыл бұрын
Often the museums only want the containers/packaging/empty washed tins for safe display purposes, which is why in many videos Steve opens containers from the bottom and purposefully saves packaging to donate to museum displays... But these videos are far more than you could ever get from a display! Plus it reaches people that would likely never see these because they didn't visit such a museum... Both are important ways to preserve history, and Steve helps with both 👍 Steve is definitely a great man for his studies, presentations, and preservations of this very important, often under appreciated history 👏

I love it when Steve finds cigarettes. I don’t smoke anymore but seeing the different design philosophy is interesting. Plus, he’s very good at pinpointing flavors and notes. It feels like I can taste what he’s describing. Also fun to imagine what it might have been like having a hard and terrifying day, having only that smoke to look forward to.
@K12machinima
@K12machinima 5 ай бұрын
I think Steve is the only guy on the planet that can make smoking not only look cool, but seem like an event, rather than a force of habit; I’ve met way too many people who smoked cigarettes, and not many of them seemed to actually enjoy it, or could even describe the flavor/aroma of the cigarettes they buy. I do love the smell of pipe tobacco though. A good, quality tobacco smells sweet, somewhat fruity (like raisins), and just reminds me of my grandfather before he had lung issues and had to stop, shortly after I was born. My grandfather also served as a field medic in WW2, and while I don’t think I ever saw him hold a cigarette in any pictures, I can imagine with the hell he saw and went through on a minute-to-minute basis, a cigarette would have been a luxury, in any downtime - same with everyone else on the fronts.

Who would you be if you climbed out of what felt like a century in absolute Hell seeing an endless barrage of suffering, seeing so much death, your best friends dying they're mutilated corpses all the while you're fed propaghanda telling you who to blame? You might start to believe them and may even want to do worse to them than what they did to your friends. That anger although misplaced in reality, in their detoriated emotional adrenaline fueled state of mind it makes a lot of sense. Barely anyone knows who they would become if they were put through absolute Hell, so do not presume, in a developed society of abundance in comparision to literally every other country to ever exist, that most human being are in default good in nature. I like to believe that most of us are born neither good nor evil but that changes with conditioning.

We all enjoy these in the moment, but realistically, these videos are important historical documents. I'm really glad he's dissecting and literally pulling apart these rations. Instead of just relying on historical accounts, we get to witness them actually being used. There's a distortion with them being opened decades later in some instances, but the value here is far greater than seeing them in a museum or reading about them in a book. Thank you.

@@autismandy3050 British monarchs haven't been capable of declaring war since forever. They only rubber-stamp what Parliament decides. How are you going to blame Good King George for something that happened before or after him? Unless you're siding with the Nazis that were killed during WWII while he was king? Are you a Nazist?

My Dad is still around - he's a WW2 vet and actually did his Chindit training, although was diverted at the last minute to fuel supply projects. I'd love to show him this guy smoking a Craven A but knowing him he'd probably call him a "daft bogger"

I would totally try the cigarettes only because they're probably the 3rd safest thing there (safe in the sense that cigarettes back then were just tobacco with no chemicals added). The gum and the boiled candies being the other safe things to try. I laughed so loud when he said "latrine paper...i might have to try that" 😂😂

Hey Steve, I am a logistics soldier in the Danish Defence Forces. We just got new rations in Denmark. They are pretty good in my opinion. I know you have reviewed the previous generation. So, the next time I have the opportunity to take one home, I would like to send it for your enjoyment. I will make sure to fetch one of the good menus. Hope you see this. :)
