For My Ma (Helen) and My Pop (Blaine). For the five-year-old kid peeping around the kitchen doorway and into the living room to watch his parents slow dance to this jewel. I remember that as if it were yesterday! Man, the persistence of memory is a wondrous thing! For all of those of "The Greatest Generation." They gave all! They should never be forgotten!

I'm 62, Raised on every style of music, playing 1920's-40's 78s when I was 3 y/o. I'm sure I haven't heard everything I'd love. "There! I've said it again" is a recording on my 78 that sank deep in my heart 40+ years ago. My girl hears me trying to sound like Vaughn doing this song on special occasions, she'd rather have Paul McCartney. 'Sir Paul! Take my girlfriend please!' ...take off on an old Henny Youngman rountine. Jeff thinks with his heart and brain & says, "No, I think I'll keep her".

My mom had the radio on early in the day, back in the '40s, Vaughn's strong, mellow voice was heard often. Heard this song in my mind when I woke up this morning, great to hear it again.

The song I sing to my love since 1996 trying to sound like Vaughn. In the 1970's bought an old 78 storage box filled with hits from the big band era, this is my #1 favorite romantic song. Trouble is, she'd rather listen to The Beatles, funny and stand on your head true, lol.

In the context of 2021 a song like this sounds almost excruciatingly corny and sentimental. But that is exactly its charm. It is so unpretentious and nakedly sincere.We are so guarded and so hyper-sensitive to hipness and unhipiness these days that we don’t even know how to enjoy a simple emotional declaration like this song. I am not completely convinced that that is for the worse. A hit parade of song after song after song like this with no real complexity or ingenuity would become very tiresome very quickly, but on its own terms it is a endearing tune and performance - in my humble opinion. And functions nicely as a palate-cleanser.

It’s so ironic that for those of us who love this music it’s the other way around. Songs from 2021 are corny and out of touch to us and insincere. Listening to 2021 music would be tiresome. 😂😂 You did mention that this performance was not to complex. This is true as Vaughan Monroe is a crooner. If you want some complex items Jazz is a great genre. Specifically Afro-Latino jazz. A good place to start would be Willy Bobo and Ricardo ray. It has a very complex tempo for drummers as it mixes the 3x and 2x beats of Latin and jazz. Also for complex vocals you want to shy away from crooners. Ella Fitzgerald, Mel forme, Bobby Darin, bing Crosby, Barbara Streisand, Ethel merman, etc. these are all people who have more complex vocals though Crosby was a crooner he also had a very unique style and awesome vocal range which allowed him to become more complex vocally. Band wise, literally all of them were insanely talented so you can go any which way there Duke Ellington, Chick Webb, Count Basie, etc., Lord only knows how much talent was present. Anyways have fun trying out the new stuff. Any complex 2021 music? I feel like it’s there I just don’t know where too look.
@fosbury68
@fosbury68 3 жыл бұрын
@@sarahwheeler6541 I never said this song was insincere. Quite the opposite. It's wearing-your-heart-on-your-sleeve sincere. Your basic "I love you because you're awesome" song. And there's nothing at all wrong with that. But songs can be a little more adventurous. As far as singers, for women my favorites are Sarah Vaughn, Dinah Washington, Lady Day - of course, Jo Stafford, Blossom Dearie and Peggy Lee. For men, Bing and Frank - of course, Billy Eckstein, Johnny Hartman, Nat Cole and Joe Williams. I know all about the big bands and in addition to Basie, Webb and Ellington I'd add Woody Herman, Goodman (underrated in my opinion), Artie Shaw and Jimmy Lunceford. And as far as some recent tuneful and complex songs, here's a nice playlist I found from this month kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d9qaac6byrvTXY0.html

another one of those overly romantic american songs that made the women in europe swoon for g.i. servicemen. They thought america must be the most romantic of all places....they married and came state side and found out that it (america) wasn't all that treacly. Marital and in law problems and homesickness for the old world set in.....music is deceiving....
