As the crystal grows the consentrate of chemical deminishes , so if you add at the same level of adp when you started the white could be because of higher consentrate. Most people who grow crystals remove the crytals and then calculate how much has evaporated and only add that amount and then re add the crystal . This might be the reason why it is white as the consentrate is higher at that point

Hi Julie I just love the crystal tutorials and I'm looking forward to seeing how far you can take it with growing them and I hope that if you get tired of doing them you will come up with different ways of incorporating them into your work . I hope you keep doing them for a while as there's not much around that gives so much information as you do . Keep up the good work you clever girl.

I think you mean acid rather than acidic. Alum is technically not an acid. However, alum solutions are slightly acidic due to the aluminium ions being able to create an acidic pH environment. What is a bit confusing is that ADP solutions are also acidic. Presumably, adding alum to ADP shifts the equilibrium by adjusting the pH slightly to allow the crystallization of a different compound, perhaps diammonium hydrogen phosphate?

Julie, maybe you should try leaving the solution in the measuring cup as it cools down so when you pour it to put your seeds in there won't be crystals on the bottom already? That way any crystal growing will be attached to your seed and not on the already growing stuff on the bottom.

Julie, you can make distilled water by boiling the water for five minutes then cover while cooling. ❤Laura
@debrajol3585
@debrajol3585 5 ай бұрын
I think it requires a smaller empty pan in the center of the pan of water.. and then as the water boils the distilled pure steam/water falls off the inside of the lid into the smaller pan. The videos I saw showed the lid had bumps in it for the water to drop off of. It’s been a while since I have seen that but it’s a bit more than boiling water. Boiling water will kill off germs in so many minutes but the minerals will remain. Might wanna have a look at some chemist videos to make sure I remember that right 🤔❤ Happy Arting!

I love the little experiments you have been doing! You're probably right about impurities causing cloudiness. The slower the crystals grow and less disturbance will create clearer crystals as well. Put them in a place that doesn't experience much vibration and has a stable temperature. Using distilled water will make things a bit better. You can also get rid of impurities by recrystallizing. So you let it crystallize, crush up the crystals, and dissolve them again. The more you do this, the fewer impurities there will be. Impurities will be left behind in the solution each time. Make sure to use distilled water for the best results, though.

Maybe I'm just cheap but why not use recycled glass jars? like jam jars with wide mouths. Also, when I'm baking bread, to keep stuff warm while it rises you can place a towel over the jar. There's also insulated fabric if you want a slow cooling. That came out really nice. I bet if you tinted your top up solution with a pink, it would of been gorgeous... unless it would leave a pink dusty film over everything, but it looks like it would only color the tips and give you a 2 tone effect? don't know.
