Today On what it’s like.. 1947 ford super deluxe. Lots of ads in this one go over the differences between Souper deluxe and deluxe as well as a really nice comparison between a 41 Ford and a 47 Ford because Ford being a huge player in World War II production. Just blew off the dust to all the old dies and sold the 41 Ford until 1948 essentially.. Forgot to mention the differences between 46 and 47 they aren’t much red highlights on bumpers are the only difference is between a 46 and 47.

There was a period of time when cars had amazing styling and looked beautiful. The period after world war 2 and the 1950s and 1960s. Those old cars had lots of chrome. Today most cars look similar because they are designed to have low aerodynamic drag. Back in the past they were not concerned about aerodynamic drag.

The war didn't start for the US until the automobile industry was six weeks to two months in to the 1942 model year. I don't know how fast the switch to military production took place, but some 42 Fords were on the market. Army and Navy staff cars made during the war were 1942 Fords. It is my understanding that the companys didn't change anything on the cars at all after the war until 1949, because the designers weren't working on new car designs during the war and it took four years for the design process to go from drawing board to production. So, really, isn't the 47 Ford really a 42. As for the "Wouldn't you rather choices," I am a Ford guy, so it is Ford for me on both accounts.

You have to admire how quickly the American automobile manufacturers and other manufacturers were able to transition over to wartime production. It was truly amazing and the speed and amount of products they manufactured was unseen anywhere in the history of this world. Absolutely unbelievable. Sadly, we will never see that type of event ever happening again here in the United States. We just don't have that capacity anymore and manufacturing has become a global thing. That said. And putting all this previous stuff aside, as an automotive enthusiast I can only wonder what type of automobiles we would have seen had the automobile factories been allowed to continue on their present courses without diverting to wartime production? Even considering that the 47's from everybody were pretty much their 1941 cars, I still can't help but feel the automobile manufacturers gained both new technologies and more experience at building products better and quicker. Eventually leading to the giant boom of really, really beautiful automobiles from the 50s. An era When automobile manufacturers were able to turn over a new model every year or every two years. The methods learned from wartime production had to have helped with that. Thanks Jay for another informative video. Really enjoyed it.

Super souper Jay, well done man. It remains a matter of the greatest curiosity to me, why the world's car manufacturers chose, or agreed upon the general plan form layout of vehicles. I.e. the grill and radiator was the focal point, which then triangulated to the windscreen. The wheels kept their appearance as outriders to the grill section, with either a snail shell incorporated into the front body or a lower but flattened wing like spread, including the large headlights into any region of the frontal area. The rear wheels were also reflected as snail shell designs, with the passenger compartment kept narrow. The wheel's association to the body, almost a flared arch. This gave the cars a diminishing foot well width, allowing only a gradual increase in interior space at the roofline. Had the body perimeter filled the space between the wheels, it would have led to greater interior space, and a wider body track. Typically, this body shell layout featured pedals folding downwards, unlike the modern style of hanging from beneath the dashboard. The most significant incorporation of engineering development from WWII was the use of more robust automatic transmissions. The considerable advancements in engine design were not incorporated into American vehicles, except in drips and drops, until the 2000s,

@ Steven A LOT Of Word Salad There Steve Boy. Simply Put, Ford, Chevy And Plymouth Kept Virtually The Same Body Styles From 1942 When Auto Sales Stopped Because Of WWII. After The War, They Only Made Completely Different Wider Front Ends, (That Looked Almost Identical In Appearance To One Another With Horizontal Grill Bars), After The War, And Didn't Need To Change Much Because It Was A SELLERS MARKET To Keep Up With Demand. With Customers Needing To Replace Their Worn Out Pre War Cars. However The Big-3 Needed To Come Up With Something Better After 3-Years Of The Same Old Re-Runs In 1949, (Eliminating Fat Fenders And Down Sizing Humpy Hoods), Leading To Wider Bodies And "Slab Sides" Giving More Interior Room For Growing Families With The Baby Boom. Most Cars Didn't Get Into "Swing" Pedals Until The Early 50's, When Automatic Transmissions Became More Common, To Accommodate Women's Hatred Of Shifting Gears. Because 1940's Cars We're Still Mostly Standard Shift With A Clutch, Where Floor Pedal Mechanisms For Operating It Was Closer To The Bell Housing. The Horsepower Race Began In The Early To Mid 50's, When The Roads Got Wider And Better To Push Around All That Heavy Steel Weight. 45 To 50 mph Was As Fast As You Could Go On The Windy And Hilly Roads In My Pennsylvania Area, Without Leaving The Berm LESS Roadways And Hitting A Tree Or Rolling The Car Over... So A 100hp Engine WAS ENOUGH Back In The 40's...

@@davemckolanis4683 A 100HP engine was pretty cool anywhere back then. Sad chassis dynamics kept everything exciting. Word salad? Should have tried some of it. My point is, why was the entire world building the same thing in design, when it clearly wasn't practical? The whole world, I am not talking about isolationist America. It was the same thing all over the world, and no, Europe never copied the US in cars. A different place and market, with different roads. Suspension was better because they had to up their game, handling was better because it had to be. Live rear axles were abolished soonish, et cetera, and this applied to motorbikes and aircraft as well. Yet despite that, the car bodies were stupid and impractical boxes which pinched in near the feet and opened up just under shoulder height. It wasn't even attractive .I'm in Australia, so I have been driving since 13, old paddock bombs, which started out as cheap base models of British cars. Driving around on a muddy, slippery field gives you a lot of idea about chassis dynamics and how to control cars when they lose traction. I don't know what your problem is mate, I was commenting and asking some pretty simple questions, which nobody has picked up on.

@Eric Ruud Gotta agree with you there on engine development and the driving forces behind it. Australia is the same area as the US, but with 28 million people, mostly hugging the coastline. Back decades ago, we had goat tracks between major cities, which would make drives between Melbourne and Sydney a 12-hour affair straight through. This was pushing hard, but we have freeways now which link most of the East coast together, so the drive takes around 8 now straight through. We are among one of the few countries which consider that to be reasonable. Years ago, if a good party happened 4 hours away, wed load the car with people and head out. The British and Europeans won't understand that, because they would pass through 3 countries in that time. We first got all the Fords imported, and they were popular, and more rugged than the GMH product. If anything a few miles outside a city, turns to potholed, rutted dirt corrugations; it had to be built tough, and the motor also needed to be easy to fix. For all the similar reasons, we needed the American products, especially for families. Farmers would get a Land Rover with aluminium panels and zero amenities.

@@user-en9zo2ol4z Australia Is NOT America. Nor Is It Europe Either. Europe Was A Bombed Out War Torn MESS After WWII. And In NO WAY Was It Able To Quickly And IMMEDIATLY Start Plunging Head Long Into Auto Manufacturing. People Were Barely Surviving On Enough Food To Eat, And Needing Cities To Rebuild. And If It Wasn't For America's MARTIAL PLAN Assistance To Get Europe Back On It's Feet, Their Development Could Have Dragged On FOR YEARS Longer. You're Living In Your Own Australian Unscathed Dream Ideas Mister. Start Watching WWII Films Of What Went On And Understand The Recovery That Had To Take Place Afterward. I Worked With A Fellow In The 1970's That Was With The American Occupation Forces That Remained In Europe For A Few Years After The War Ended, Telling Us Stories About It. And By NO MEANS Did People Have Extra Money To Spend On Cars. Even America's Car Manufacturing Was Still Hampered By Raw Materials Shortages And Delays, With Families WAITING FOR WEEKS Before The Car They Ordered Arrived At A Dealership. My Dad Kept Driving His 1939 Studebaker Until 1951, And He Had A Steady Employment For Our Family All Through The 1940's. It Was A SELLERS MARKET Just To Try And Keep Up With The Car Demand. That's Why The Cars From The Big-3 Producers Remained Pretty Much The Same From 1946 To 1948. And Our Industries Weren't Destroyed AT ALL. I Suggest That You Get Up To Speed With Your History Kiddo...

He told me once that it always put him in a bad mood when someone would bring in a Ford V8 for repair. He claimed the 6 was a better engine. Old Henry rushed the V8 into production in '32 against the wishes of his engineers. Good on you to feature the 'The Grass Roots'. Loved them when I was a kid. @@davemckolanis4683 sp.'ASSUMPTION'. We are all entitled to our opinions Sir. @@michaelabernathy7013 You Can Find MORE Information About Henry And His Stubborn Attitudes About The V-8 On Line To Update You If You Wish. A Brief Update For You Here. From 1922 To 1928 Henry Became Interested In An X-8 Radial Engine, Like What They Were Producing For The Ford Tri-Motor Airplanes. But It Had Oil And Cooling Problems For An Auto Applications. Chevy Was Coming Out With A New "Stove Bolt" Six Cylinder Engine, (And Not To Be Out Done), In 1928 Henry Had C. James Smith Start On A Shorter Length Single Cast Block V-8. Pirating Ideas From Other V-8 Engine Makers, But They Were Manufactured In Several Sections. Even Though His Son Edsel And "Cast Iron" Charlie Sorenson We're In Favor Of A 6-Cylinder Engine As Well. Unfortunatly Henry Hung On To His INSISTANT Old Ideas TOO LONG. Like The 19-Year Run Of The Under Powered Model T, Still Using Mechanical Brakes Into The 1930's When Chrysler Had Hydraulic Brakes By The Mid 20's, And Still Using Singular Leaf Spring "Buggy" Type Suspension On Ford's Until 1948. So He Had 4-Teams Working Independently On Their Own Versions Of A V8, With Henry Butting In, That Actually Dragged Down The Development Of A Better Collaborative Effort Engine. After Another 4-Year Run Of The Hardly Changed Model A, (While The Competitors We're Offering Yearly Changes And Upgrades), In 1932 Ford Came Out With The 4-Cylinder Model B, And Also The Model 18 V-8. But Unfortunatly USED USED THEIR CUSTOMERS Of Their Model 18 V-8 Engines As Their Testers, Instead Of Perfecting It With Factory Tests. Resulting In Early Problems Like Overheating, From Running The Exhaust Gas Through The Block. It Helped The Engine Warm Up Quicker, But Also Caused Overheating And Even Block Cracks. So It WASN'T So Much A Case Of "Rushing" The Engine Into Production; But Rather A LACK OF FACTORY TESTING To Ensure A Reliable New Engine At The Beginning. In Fact My 1950 Mercury Flathead That I Own Has Better Engine Improvements From The Stock Version. With Dual Exhaust To Remove The Hot Gasses Quicker Out And Away From The Engine Block That Should Have Been Standard Equipment, My Installation Of 160° Thermostats To Keep The Engine Water Temperature Cooler, Colder Spark Plugs To Help Dissipate Head Heat, And Fiber Mount Blocks Under The Carbonators To Avoid Fuel Bowl Gas From Boiling. But It Can STILL Vapor Lock When Left To Idle For Too Long Of A Time. Because The Fuel Pump Is Located On The Top Of The Engine, With The Fan Sucking Radiator Heat Inside The Engine Compartment And Trapping It Under That Dome Hood. So I Carry A Couple Extra Gallons Of Water In The Car To Pour Over The Fuel Pump To Cool It Down If It Vapor Locks. LOTS OF NEW CARS Can Have Problems Or "Bugs" In Them That Surface After They First Come Out. And The New Ford V8 Happened To Be One Of Them...

Hi Jay, just talking about your height and fit to an older car without seat adjustments. I had a friend, 6' 7" tall. And although both he and his entire basketball team could sit comfortably in all Ford & GM vehicles, when it came to some more specialised cars, he wished to try, he couldn't fit. This applied even more so to many sports cars. (as you mentioned) even the Japanese cars were appropriately adapted for the very short (Asian or female market) as well as to all but the freakishly tall. This applies across the board for clothing and footwear (depending on the size of the market) as he found he could not buy jeans long enough or fashionable shirts and t-shirts. The market demographic for size is limited to a maximum and a minimum at each end. Equally, I had another friend who was very short, and he would rage, at having to buy his clothing and shoes from the kiddie section of department stores. This isn't something most are aware of, because we lie within the + & - range of normal, where anything off the peg is available. Material strength doesn't scale, though, so your shoes will wear out quicker, just as fat people's couches develop sagging cushions, very quickly. The Dutch, are apparently the tallest people in Europe, so they are a natural nation of motorcycle aficionados where height intrudes very little. Just imagine if they had a car manufacturing industry (they love racing and high performance engines) They would doubtless build 2+2 and 2 seater sports cars with room enough to camp in? Keep the comparisons, for they are very important, as you realised very early. Mr Jay Details man.

First scenario I'd pick the Ford, without hesitation, although I do really like the look of the Dodge as well. Second scenario, it would be the Ford Woody. 😎 Video

One way to differentiate the 1947 and 1946 Fords is by looking at the front turn signal lights. In 1947 the turn signal lights were below the headlights, whereas in 46 they were above the grill. The Ford cars do seem to use the same grill and taillights from 1946 to 1948. As for preferences I would choose the 47 Dodge from both scenarios.

couple of things to consider: 1) the 1946 Ford convertible was available with the V8 only.....2) the 6 was a decent performer in its own right, but the vast majority of Ford buyers bought Fords because of its perceived ( and demonstrated) V8 performance advantage over Chevy and Plymouth....

Yeah, everything was metal or glass, with a minimum of plastics. Cars had to built more lithe, as in England & Europe, or you needed big torquey engines just to get them rolling. Even the steel used today is HS for high strength, so is far thinner for better stiffness than the past. Everything else is a plastic, just it's coated in leather in the more expensive cars. Plastic rules.

Hey, an open question to each and every American viewer. You have a 'Petroleum Council' yet you call a liquid a gas, which then becomes legitimised by the term Gasoline. Why do you guys use this term? We can actually get gas here for cars and delivery trucks. It is very cheap, at half the price, and is called LPG. Liquid Petroleum Gas. When I lived in the US, the gas was as cheap as borscht, Australia is the third cheapest, so we love our V8s, but nobody has been able to explain this conundrum to me. Paper or Plastic; Petrol or Gas?

That sounds like a really cool episode automotive literature.. words and why we use them =) I’m honestly not sure why we call gas and you call it petrol.. I think it’s because the magical process that happens in fuel injection/carburetors in the liquid turns into a gas I think that’s why we call it gas because it’s an actual gas when it’s being used.. But honestly it’s just speculation
@user-en9zo2ol4z
@user-en9zo2ol4z Жыл бұрын
@@What.its.like. No it is never a gas, both carburettors and fuel injection atomise the fuel, even LPG must be turned to liquid by a regulator and then atomised. I think the key may lay in the term 'fuel', I get fuel when it is running low. You see when you see a diagram for a cracking plant, at a certain level you get petrol, way above bitumen and diesel, kerosene. The higher up the cracker, the more refined oil becomes. LPG is another thing which is a hydrocarbon but not as energy dense as petrol. But both are way more energy dense than batteries can ever be. The only significant issue with LPG is that a pierced tank doesn't explode or combust. They instead Bleve "Boiling liquid expanding vapour explosion" A very uncommon event. The same would happen to a propane tank that was burst. Although Propane has even less energy density, like it makes a difference? But your organisation responsible for automotive lubricants and fuels is called "The Petroleum Council of America. You should be able to buy petroleum jelly? Great for battery terminals. to keep away the green stain of death.

@@billolsen4360 No, you know what you mean, and most if not all Americans know. The rest of the world realises it is a liquid. And, the Petroleum Council of America should probably have a say? That is why I keep asking, because over the decades, nobody has provided an answer. So your name is Bill, and we don't need a reason, but a fundamental chemical is being misrepresented by its phase state, so that is confusing, especially when nobody knows why.

And If The Bumpers Still Didn't Have A Good Match, I'd Use An OLD TIRE Between The Vehicles. So The Rubber Pad Idea Must Be Terminology Used And Applying To TRUCK Bumpers.
