Great to see the 1950 Rovex . My older brother had one THAT Christmas. Looking back it really was pretty basic.....those pick up shoes for example. I can remember my brother running it in a darkened room and it arced all over the shop, scared me to death (well I was only about 2). But that carriage you showed was the ones that came in the original set of three (check out the short wheel base) and sure enough the banana effect took hold after about five years ! The controller in the set was battery driven, but my brother must have saved up his pocket money and bought a transformer so it could run off the mains , hence the formidable arcing. Ah, memories, eh ? Great vid

The second ever loco I had was Princess Elizabeth. Not sure of the year, but probably mid 70's. She was loco driven by an X04, had more detailed valve gear than the early model you showed, spoked wheels, plus she had a smoke generator which took drops of light machine oil, and a piston powered by a gear atop the X04 worm drive to puff the smoke out proportionally to her speed. The tender had one of the axles fitted with a brass tab that scraped on the underside of the tender, which in turn acted as a soundbox, making a crude chuffing sound as the loco moved. Eventually she fell apart with overuse by my young hands, and I no longer have her, but she gave me an everlasting love of LMS and particularly the Settle and Carlisle Railway. God bless her, and Hornby for that!

Amazing evolution between all the Princess Royal Class locomotives by Hornby! 😃 It's so amazing of how we went from an old 1950s tooling to a new 2020s tooling! I find it interesting to see all the different features and details that you'd expect from a Princess Royal Class locomotive by Hornby at certain ages! My 2 favorite ones would have to be a tie between the 2003 version and 2020 version because of how crisp the details are along with the performance it has that you'd expect for a modern locomotive like this! The Hornby Princess Royal Class is probably one of the best models Hornby has produced so far! This brings back a lot of memories to those people in the old years when they owned the old Princess Royal Class locomotive by Hornby from the 1950s or 1970s! 😁

Great this idea to make a collector's interest-driven video around a top shelf product from Hornby. I really enjoy to see the historical evolution, and have a look at some collectibles. Your original Triang is a must-have for a collector interested in '50s/'60s model trains. That's also a good way to see the technical evolution of the thing. Anyway, the actual Railroad locomotive is pretty good if you close your eyes on the car bumper-like couplings ! I guess this point is not an issue for the public which buys this model. And kitbashers can certainly replace them, I am waiting for a Railroad LNER teak coach with the same couplers, I will see if it is worth the buy. If I can jettison the original coupler, everything's all right for me. The more I look at the Railroad range, the more I find interesting items. Hornby had a good idea when they launched this range ages ago, you can have low prices items with a good quality, and an appeal to nearly every modeller. Good move from the marketing department of Margate !

Great video Sam, here is a footnote which you may be interested in! I can remember back in the 60's that I think Triang bought out a semi kit version of their Princess model. It was exactly the same as the ready to run version but just in a really nice bits and pieces kit with all the screws and everything to make up a pretty good for the time running model. I still have mine somewhere around! I moved on to Wills white metal kits and brass semi scratch builds after that. Interesting loco's LMS Turbomotive and the 6399 LMS Fury. Great fun! : )

I loved my 1950s Tri-ang black 'Princess Elizabeth' with its gold tender emblem and two very short LMS maroon coaches (with roofs that warped, of course). I got it new when the real 'Princess Elizabeth' was seen regularly on the main line. Then I got a BR maroon 'The Princess Royal' with valve gear - wow, what an improvement. It looked so realistic. These both disappeared many years ago. I also have two of the 2003 models in my cabinet which look generally very good, but I think the bottom of the cab is wrong (not deep enough) and I just keep gazing at this fault. Which means I will have to get the new one! This was one of your most interesting videos - a great piece of work. Also notice how the rear pony truck frame is cut in half on the 2003 model and rendered beautifully on the new model.

Well a bit late for the party lol. Great video and informative. Here's an interesting fact about the 1950's Princess Elizabeth...... The Rev Awdry built his first model of Gordon out of the Princess Elizabeth loco. Hacked and rounded the belpaire firebox and other adjustments because the A1/3 was not available as a model at the time. His reasons for building Gordon as he did?? He was getting fed up of inconsistent drawings so endeavoured to set his models up as he wanted the image to be in the books and send the pic to the illustrators.

Plastic will be around for a while. In the future you may not buy a completed model but download plans and programs to make you own loco on your 3D printer/ mini-machine shop. Ah, memories... I have one of the Tri-ang versions, after the revamp to remove those rollers, etc. Mine is in BR (Midlands?) crimson, though with nothing like the level of detail in the painting, but it still looks pretty good. I haven't run it for many a year, but when I retire in the not-too-distant furure, I'd like to get it overhauled and run it again. Don't have any coaches, though, so I'd have to hunt some of them down. The couplings could be a problem, though, as Tri-ang and contemporary Hornby couplings were different and I remember having trouble connecting different rolling stock up. I was interested to hear about the problems of old coaches with modern track as, although Tri-ang and Hornby track was a bit different (mostly in the way it conncected), I never had any trouble that way. What has changed in modern track? Anyway, thanks for a fascinating look into the history of this type as a model. I strongly suggest that you do similar videos for other classes.

'We have the Princess', to quote Edgar Rice Burroughs. I have the tender drive version and it was not at all satisfactory until I wired it up to the locomotive directly. It runs absolutely perfectly now. and the 'Irish Mail' can travel at a good pace. My other Princess is from the early 2000's and has always been a great runner, in fact it is in the top three best runners I have. The latest edition must be extremely good.

I must admit....the X04 growl (as I like to call it) is very reminiscent of my first loco which was Sir Winston Churchill with smoke units fitted. However, you can't go past the quality that is now the Hornby locos. A quick question: in your opinion, would you say that Hornby stick has a lit more finesse since being built in China? Cheers Sam for a brilliant channel mate.

When I first read "Hornby princess" I thought you were talking about yourself Sam, but it's a loco. As I've said before, steam is not my thing, and I didn't think I'd last 2 minutes, but as others have commented, that was like a history lesson, which is always interesting, so it held my attention, and I watched the whole thing, no fast-forwarding. So thanks for the informative insight into the history of our hobby (but I still don't want one) Take care Sam, 🌈😷🇬🇧

Hey! I use IPA and cotton buds to clean the wheels. Don't use oil to clean wheels/tracks! The same can be done for track, but I'd recommend getting a PECO track rubber - they're fantastic! :D

My Brother had the 80's princess, was his pride & joy loco. I used to really like how heavy the tender was but even back in them days, tender driven was a pain. Would derail so easy going over points if it was close to coming out of a curve. We had to remake our layout a few times for that.

Moving Picture Machine Film was also made from Cellulose Acetate from around the 1930's through the end of the era (some later film was made on a polyester base). Previously film was on the unstable and flammable/explosive cellulose nitrate. Cellulose Acetate also has the unique feature of breaking down over time into its base materials and it begins to smell like vinegar, a condition called vinegar syndrome. Bakelite might have been a better choice for model trains.

I have not got a Princess Class of any description, but I recently bought a tender-driven King Class by mistake from eBay! I initially didn't like it, but a tender-driven loco is at an advantage on a small layout which has a gradient since that allows you to have more layout on a smaller baseboard. Can you make a video comparing your tender-driven example with the modern loco-driven Princess hauling a rake of coaches up a hill? R658 will create the maximum permissible gradient!

Great video Sam, it was nice to see how the Princess' have evolved. I personally like the 1950's one, despite not growing up in that era. I'm not sure what it is, but it has a certain charm to it. (I personally wouldn't mind if they re-released the 1950's one with modern updates, but keep the same shell). I own one, but I don't know what year it is.
