Brazil built the planet's biggest football stadium as a breathtaking stage for the 1950 finals but their hopes of consecrating the cavernous, three-tiered sporting cathedral of the Maracana with a first world title were shattered in one of the competition's great surprises.
In a FIFA World Cup™ that concluded with a four-team mini-league, the hosts met Uruguay in a deciding fixture which proved a final in all but name. Needing only to draw, Brazil led through Friaca's 47th-minute strike before Uruguay turned the game on its head via goals from Juan Schiaffino and Alcides Ghiggia. A deathly hush descended on the Maracana as some 200,000 voices fell silent and Brazil's little neighbour to the south celebrated a second world crown.

This is amazing. The sheer sound of the brazil fans when they scored is like no other. Even when they didn't score it sounded like a regular goal in modern football. And to think that nobody died in the stadium considering how many people were in there is amazing. This is what football is all about. I put my headphones on full volume and listened to the sound when brazil scored and it gave me goosebumps.

Con el empate Brasil era campeón porque no fue una final. Era un grupo final y en la última fecha se enfrentaron los dos primeros. Por eso no cayó TAN mal el empate y los uruguayos siguieron yendo a buscar. Hermosa historia futbolera la del maracanazo. Desde Argentina envidiamos lo que lograron esos tipos.

Si es una final, ya que era la última fecha entre los dos posibles ganadores que dependían de si mismos para obtener el título, siendo además que pasaron de un grupo anterior a la fase final ambos superando al tercer y cuarto puesto antes del partido

He was never the same after the match. People treated him badly and poorly to the point where a woman said to her son, "My boy, this is the man who made Brazil cry." Also, when he wanted to visit the 1994 team, he was forbidden by Mario Zagallo due to fear of bad luck. He died a poor man but not before saying his last words, "Under Brazilian law, the maximum sentence is 30 years. But I have been serving for something that I am not even responsible, for 50 years."

It was definitely more tragic than the 7-1 defeat. Fans and media are totally convinced that Brazil were meant to be winners, to the point that they celebrate even before the match began. Gold medals were made with the Brazilians players' name imprinted on them. A patriotic song was composed and practiced, ready to be played after the match. Politicians and mayors even made speeches glorifying the team. When Uruguay shocked them, they fell into silence and despair. Everything that was invested and bet for, it all ended up with nothing. The gold medals were discarded never to be seen again, the song was never played, and several fans were depressed and committed suicide. Brazil may have won 5 World Cups, but the Maracana tragedy will always haunt them for generations to come. After the 7-1 defeat, it goes to show that they are indeed 5-time World Cup Champion, but they just couldn’t win it on home soil.

The theme of tragedy is a bit undermined by the sheer stupidity and arrogance. Anyone with half a brain would check themselves about celebrating something that hadn't already been done. Maybe they weren't the sharpest tools in the box.

Após a derrota para o Uruguai na final da Copa de 1950, o uniforme da seleção brasileira mudou. Antes o Brasil jogava inteiro de branco. Mas por superstição, a camisa da derrota no Maracanã foi abandonada. Em 1953, foi feito um concurso para escolher o novo uniforme da seleção brasileira. Aldyr Schlee, foi o autor do novo uniforme da seleção brasileira, que seria camisas amarelas com detalhes verdes, calções azuis e meiões brancos. As novas cores, inspiradas na bandeira nacional, deram muita sorte para a seleção brasileira, e após inúmeras conquistas a camisa verde-amarela passou a ser conhecida e respeitada no mundo todo.

The Brazilian goalkeeper, Moacir Barbosa, was heavily blamed for the second goal. People said he didn't play his best due to lack of patriotism because he was black. He was shunned for the rest of his life and died practically destitute.

Some are still alive.Zagallo who died in January (2024) was a young man and was there. Some brazilian journalists like João Máximo (a teen in 1950) saw the game .He is alive and well.

Leading to the final leg of the group, only Brazil and Uruguay still had a chance to be champions, but Uruguay needed to win whereas a draw sufficed for Brazil. Also, at the same moment this match was being played, Sweden and Spain tied 2-2.

A los jugadores brasileños los presionaban de todos lados, los políticos que estaban en campaña electoral, el periodismo que también usaba el supuesto título que iba a ganar Brasil para hacer campaña para determinados candidatos, también los presionaba el público. Uruguay fue a jugar el partido con tranquilidad, sin presiones, con poco para perder y mucho para ganar. Cuando Brasil pierde el título, el periodismo que le había llenado la cabeza a todo Brasil de que iban a ser campeones mundiales usa a Barbosa como chivo expiatorio y lo culpan de la derrota. El pobre Barbosa cargó con eso hasta el día de su muerte.

Barbosa (along with Bigode & Juvenal to an extent) was unnecessarily blamed for this defeat. The coach Flávio Costa changed the setup to an orthodox W-M, which the players were unfamiliar with. Their left side was left highly susceptible to attack, which coincidentally was also the side on which Uruguay were strong (both their goals came from buildup on that flank).
