As we join this repair in progress. I tackle a cool but broken Zenith AM/FM radio. I take pity on this basket case, and decide to do everything in my power to save it from the junk pile.

I know this vid has been around for awhile but i stuck one of my dinner plates together with Duco Cement not expecting much but it's been a year. Plates still together. My father used to call those small tubes "peanut tubes". My doctor had that same AM/FM radio in his waiting room. His waiting room being in the high ceiling parlor of an old Victorian house. My friend across the street had cause to excavate an old trash pit in an old pasture now wooded over. We pulled out an English transfer ware plate in pieces about 1840.The pattern was blue. The duco cement put those pieces together too. The Doctor always had classical music on while you waited for him to open the squeaky wheeled pocket doors.

Nice one Buzz, you’ve made a corkin’ good job of the radio cabinet. Once the radio is all back together, it will both look and sound great. In my humble opinion, Zenith are the best American domestic radios. Cheers ol’ chap, Phil.

The first one of these I encountered was placed gently on the ground at the local town dump. I was 17 at the time, and just there to discard the rubbish. I loaded it lovingly into my Valiant station wagon and took it home. I plugged it in after a cursory inspection and not only did it seem to work quite well I was astounded at the tonal response for a series-wired table radio. I've had several others since then. Really worthy resto project. Yours looks good.

When you showed the great paint job on the case in the far distance I could hear the "So Called Purist" screaming what lungs they have left out. Glad to know there are still people out there with the Chutzpah to do what they feel and know what looks good to them. Good Work on putting the puzzle back together. I know when Humpty Dumpty fell down he was unable to be put back together again but you provide that to be a false statement.

Hi Buzz, A great video. Thanks for showing how to do the radio station numbers. I could be wrong, but I once heard that the single white dot by the 100 marks a radio station in Chicago that Zenith owns. I think they had their headquarters in Chicago. Regards, Tom

THOMMGB , You are correct. That station was WEFM, at 99.5 MHz. Zenith Radio Corporation owned and operated that station, and it was located in Chicago, IL, where their corporate and manufacturing facilities were. I was told that Zenith operated that station so that their Chicago customers would have a station to listen to (on their Zenith FM radios). Back in the day (1950), WEFM was probably one of the only (or perhaps the only) FM broadcast station on the air in Chicago. This was FM radio at its infancy, and Zenith Radio was probably its earliest pioneer. I loved listening to WEFM for many years. They broadcasted a balanced mix of classical, semi-classical, broadway, and even some folk music, from time to time. Brief commercials for Zenith radios and televisions were made once each half hour. They were on the air each day, starting at 9:30 in the morning, and signed off at midnight. I was saddened when Zenith sold the station in 1965. Since then, the station has exclusively had a country music format.

Hi Buzz, I love your video! I had to pause it a ton of times because I was laughing so many times. It’s such a terrible shame that your Bakelite Case was busted so bad, I just hate tossing the dice when I buy radios on eBay. Nowadays I tell them how I’d like it packed and just hope they pack it that way. I love the color you painted this radio, it looks amazing. The reason I wanted to reach out to you is that I just got the same radio and I knew that it didn’t work. When I opened it up the selenium rectifier must have shorted out and overloaded the filter caps and they in turn must have overloaded the high-wattage resisters because they burned up and burned up a lot of what was right around that area. I was hoping you might consider selling me a copy of your SAMs Photofact Photos and legends showing the internal components so I can identify the stuff I need to replace. I’d really appreciate it, I have the Riders but it doesn’t show a component view. Please consider it if you don’t mind. You can email me at budsipad at gmail Dot Com. Thank you so much and not matter what, you did one hell of a job on this radio, you should be really proud! Buddy

I enjoy your videos! We need humor in our lives and you are doing a great job on that. I'd like to let you in a couple of products which I have used extensively, as have all of the plastic/metal building kits hobbyists, especially model railroaders. Micro Sol and Micro Set made by Microscale Industries. If you do more decals in the future they are a must have. Will make your life much easier and the results will astound you. Cheers!

These sound great, really nice tone, when finished, despite not being a Philco. Had to throw that in, for Tim and Art. Good on ya, Buzz, doing that tedious dial work, It really paid off. I kind of like leaving radios, at least their original color, but, sometimes, you have to change it up, when a cabinet is that busted up. The red looks good and it'll really look sharp, with the polished dial. Looking forward to seeing the finished set.

Larry EllisMy graphite golf club shafts would sometimes arrive all broken into many pieces. Finally traced it to the temperature change when FedEx planes descended from great heights, where the shafts had frozen. I think that is how your case arrived in pieces.

I was wondering where Dickel's last name came from and now I think I know. His family were "Flockers" and someone heard one of them say "Ah'll Flocket" and then another one did the same until they were referred to as the "AFlockets". Has a bit of believability to it methinks. ;-)
