First saw these guys at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo Michigan in late 68. The opener was Montrose another great group. Then I got drafted and was lucky enough to see them in Germany 3 times with Humble Pie opening for them. An amazing band that always delivered!!! WAAAAY under appreciated. Wake the efff up rock & roll hall of fame!!!
@johnhalverson1133 Жыл бұрын
I saw them in Schweinfurt, Germany when they gave a free concert for GI's. Hard to see the stage (which was flatbed trailers put next to each other) for all the hash smoke. I met Donnie Brewer a few years later and he remembered looking out and seeing 3 tanks with their gun turrents and spotlights aimed at the stage, Humble Pie opened for the Funk. A rockin show for sure.

One of the greatest bands ever!! HOF shame on you!!!!!
Powerhouse band. It’s almost like they existed in an alternate universe from all the other massive groups of that era. Yet they were as good, if not better in certain ways, than most of them. Mark Farner’s voice sounds just as good today as it does in this video, and he plays with just as much passion. Absolutely great guitar player, singer, songwriter, and showman.
@JoeBoo18 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely right! Late 60's they were as popular and sold as many if not more albums than anyone (fact). So big that Led Zeppelin opened for GFR at a huge concert somewhere in California I think. They still tour and sound as good as ever. ROCK ON!
@georgeciresi8084 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree with you 100% . I am a New Yorker and have seen them all , went to Woodstock, love Rock, Fillmore East every weekend but no one for me was ever such the total package from A to Z like Mark Farner. I will never forget honestly thinking SHEA STADIUM was going to collapse during the July 9th , 1971 stadium show the whole 55,000 seat Ballpark was swaying up & down, the mezzanine, lodge and upper boxes were moving. I was later told that they were considering stopping the show but it was a fairly new (6 yrs.) old venue but you know that they JUST DON’T MAKE THINGS LIKE THEY USED TO !

I agree with you ! Heard the live album when I was 13 (48 years ago... ) and this tune became immediatly one of my favorites, and still is, though I am very eclectic in my choices and musical tastes! Still goose bumps when hearing Mark "singing-shouting" like that and still the feeling that they share with me their incredible energy ! I know Don has been a source of inspiration for many drummers (I'm one of these!) and I wouldn't be surprised to be told he was the one who inspired the Muppets Show creators for their famous drummer "Animal"!!! When the 'Funk' hit the stage, they owned your ass. Mark, Mel and Don were so powerful you forgot all about the other bands on the bill, how you got there, who you came with; just about everything except being part of this ernergy that you couldn't deny. You were in a full sweat, shakin' it, whether you had any rhythm or not. They probably had more impact on me than I ever realized." -Eddie Van Halen

@robertshirley3422 Жыл бұрын
Think they grew past their initial garage rock stage when they released the Red Album, sold out Shea Stadium faster than The Beatles (72 hours) and had Peter Grant (Mgr. of Zeppelin) have their power turned off in Atlanta, as Grant was paranoid that Funk was about to show up his up band. I live in LA and in the early 70s they headlined the Forum and sold out 4 consecutive shows same day. They were huge in the early 70s!! 🎵🎶🎵🎼🎸🎸🎸🔥🔥🔥
