The narrator on the ‘56 Packard commercial is Hugh Reilly, who later went on to become Timmy’s dad on “Lassie.” He was working on the “Reader's Digest” TV show in ‘56 that was sponsored by Studebaker Packard Corp; thus the tie-in to this commercial.

Packard made nice cars. I remember my fathers 1951 or 1952 four door sedan -- What a tank! I also remember my uncle's Mayfair(?) model convertible; it was a beautiful car. He, a bachelor with no children, always had beautiful and stylish cars; as well as pretty girlfriends. Thank you, Mr. Paulvoline for a trip down memory lane, including the chime of the filmstrip prompts. ❤👍😊 (subscribed)

Thanks for putting this together. It brought back memories. A friend’s dad drove a 1952 four door sedan with Ultramatic up into the early sixties. It was very smooth riding, comfortable, roomy, and reliable.

Moonshine runners car of choice besides Ford. The hydraulic shocks made the car ride level with a little adjustment. The 12 cylinder engine was powerful. In later years, mechanics in the moonshine trade would buy new Fords and use the Packard shocks , install 250 gallon Moon tanks in the trunk. Thunder Road in 1958 showed this ingenuity these guys could do . The movie was based on a story by Robert Mitchum. The story was based on real events. It's on U Tube and also available on DVD. The Fords were equipped with racing Mills.

You seriously don't know what you're talking about. The Packard 12 cylinder was last made in 1939 and would never have been used due to its size and weight alone. Moon also NEVER made a "250 gallon tank". Moon Tanks were 5 gallons at most.

@@malibuconv1968 I know exactly what I am talking about. My uncle had a 52 Packard that had a 12 cylinder engine that he hauled moonshine in. The motor was big and powerful. He did go to a 54 Ford with the hydraulic shocks and a flathead racing mill later. The Packard's were fast but clumsy a and he only used it once or twice. He took the hydraulic shocks and refitted them to the Ford. The 54 was the last year they made a flathead V8.. I think it was a 54 but the body styles from 52-54 were about the same ,so I might be wrong on that. My uncle was a great mechanic and rebuilt all his cars for the best speed. His was a black 2 door sedan with roll bars he made himself..This all took place from 1951 to 1955. He quit driving after that. You have no idea how the moonrunner business was back then so keep your mouth shut and do some checking. I was there. I was 8- 10 years old when my uncle was in the business. He did keep making " home brew" on the stove but he didn't drive anymore..Packard was mostly used for their hydraulic shocks but a friend of my uncle was killed in 12 cylinder 51 Packard. I'm not saying that the motors were the same in 39 and 51. The 51 had a V12 which fit nicely in the car. The 30s models had the the straight 12 with a long hood. Packard's were made up until 55 - 57. I saw a 56 Packard with hydraulic shocks and a conventional V8 souped up engine that one guy used until 1960. It was redone after that and sold to a collector. It was black. Before arguing with anyone you need to realize that moonshiners were very inventive and designed their cars themselves after buying from the factory. My uncle's black 54 Ford was redone and he drove it for years before selling it in 1970. I wanted it but he said it was too powerful for me. Hudson also made a straight 12 cylinder and later a V12. But Hudson's weren't very popular with the moonrunners

Of all the classic cars of the fifties, I find myself drawn to the Packard, because it was a different breed of cat, those were good size cars on a huge wheelbase, I think if I won the lottery, I would go after a a Packard because they're so rarely seen, they really are a stunning car, & it seems like the rarest year for ultimate ownership would be the 56, on account of it being the last year for a huge car that would be a standout anywhere!!

What ever went wrong with Packard ? Here in England it was the Governments car of choice in the 1930s and all through the war until 1950. (The Royal Family preferred Buicks),

Bad management . Despite raking in millions during the war,the car side of Studebaker -Packard was badly run .The company still exists as a shell for various different manufacturing concerns .

There's more to it than that. They were an exclusive luxury brand until the depression, when they started making dressed down cars on a shorter wheelbase to keep sales up. Even at that, they were still Packards, handsome, still better appointed than most, well built, and word was out that for a smidge more than other mid-priced brands, you could have one. They were successful so they expanded production. Entering this market took the brand's prestige down half a notch, turning them into a volume maker, but got them through it. So, because of this, they actually grew and found themselves with larger capacity when the war hit. They had contracts for engines and such (notably, the Packard version of the Rolls Royce Merlin), and did come through the war in good shape (but again, now larger than before, requiring more sales). Then they introduced the bathtub cars, popular with the elite and those who enjoyed adventurous styling, but that got old fast (too hard to update significantly) and a couple years into it sales tanked and they suffered heavy losses. That was the big post-war hit. Combine that with stodgy management unable to think differently from the past and a renewed need to offer a lower priced line (like the 200 series above, which was the next blow on their prestige), and that was the ALMOST last straw. The '55 and '56 cars were a convincing refresh (almost looking like a new model), but suffered from rushed production poor build quality, partly addressed in '56, but highly publicized - and THAT cinched it. Then the Studebaker merger redressed Studebaker models as Packards for a couple years and that was that for the name. The Studebakers looked great dressed up with some new sheetmetal, but the now smaller Packards (although just as attractive) looked like Studebakers, the Loewy greenhouse being too distinctive to hide, and too expensive to retool. Nobody was fooled.

If only the egos of the leaders of the companies had not taken over. .... Realistically, a don't think that anything could have saved Packard, Studebaker Hudson and Nash except a merger of all four. The only reason AMC survived is because they built a small, economical car when the public had need for such a car as a family's second or third car (grocery getter). AMC was innovative with a following for it's somewhat quirky cars.
