I recently acquired this Petter AVA1 engine and Gardner-Denver irrigation pump. I believe it is late 50's. The previous owner said the injector pump needed to be timed, as the engine smoked a lot when he tried starting it after he refurbished it. He didn't want to put any more time and effort into the engine so he sold it as-is. I didn't have the foggiest idea what it would take to get running and hoped it wouldn't be too difficult.
I timed the injector pump and gave it a go. Well, it certainly did smoke. Like a chimney. No, actually worse than a chimney. But eventually it cleared up and ran fine.
Per the manual, I pull up the priming lever to shut the engine down (never use the decompression lever to stop one of these engines).
The cooling shroud is rubbing on the flywheel and is quite noisy, so that will be the next project to fix. And yes, the far fender support is loose...
