Stalin's Soviet Union comes to life in full color with the discovery of a long-hidden collection of images.
Major Martin Manhoff spent more than two years in the Soviet Union in the early 1950s, serving as assistant army attaché at the U.S. Embassy, which was located just off Red Square at the beginning of his time in Moscow.
He took full advantage of his post, using his gifted photographic eye to capture hundreds of images of everyday life in Moscow and across the U.S.S.R.
When he left the country in 1954 amid accusations of espionage, Major Manhoff took with him reels of 16 millimeter film and hundreds of color slides and negatives he shot during his travels - including of one of the Soviet Union's pivotal events, Josef Stalin's funeral.
But after his return to the United States, the trove of rare images lay forgotten, stored in cardboard boxes in a former auto body shop in the Pacific Northwest until its discovery by a Seattle-based historian.

My father visited the USSR for engineering work between the 70s and 80s which was long after Stalin but he still found it impressionable and even brought back some Soviet mathematics and engineering books that i grew up on.

I urge anyone to watch a video of pictures of Russia before the revolution. From a country of barefooted, illiterate millet farmers to the first human in space in a single lifetime. I don't think people really understand what the Soviets accomplished in terms of how fast they were able to modernize their previously feudal society.

They had no choice but to do a bolshevik revolution : before WWI Russia was a ressource-exporting colony of the West. All wheat grown was exported to Western Europe, mostly Germany, while peasants were forbidden to consume it and had to feed themselves upon buckwheat, millet and rye they grew on badlands. Only the Bolshevik revolution put a full stop to that abuse. They went barefoot because all leather was for exportation.

The Empire was one of the fastest growing and industrializing states at the time. It had the highest distribution of land ownership of any major power, lowest cost of living, and many more things going for it. Russia was set back at least 10 years due to the revolution, and the Empire was not feudal. The british had to destroy it as they had always wanted to, and the only reason the Soviets were able to rebuild so quickly was due to unbelievable western support and aid.

Спасибо за фотографии! На одной из них, с подписью "бассейн в неизвестном месте" - бассейн в главном здании МГУ, но с зеркальным эффектом, перевернуто. Окно (окна) там слева, если смотреть с места фотографа. Я плавал в нем в 1997-2005 годах. Этот бассейн в те годы был почти таким, как на фото. Цвет воды точно такой! )

Комментаторы огонь. В СССР, перед войной, 70% промышленности было построено в Европейской части страны, поближе к залежам угля, к донскому угольному бассейну, потому что уголь на тот момент был как нефть сейчас. Во время вторжения Германии они очень быстро оккупировали большинство промышленности СССР, потому как не все успели эвакуировать на восток, и пустили промышленные активы СССР для своих нужд на оккупированных территориях, колхозы которые выращивали еду разорялись и еда вывозилась в Германию, уголь, сталь, медь и проч все вывозилось в Германию, а при отступлении немцы что не смогли вывезти уничтожили, кого не смоги вывезти уничтожили. 1710 городков и ПГТ, 70 тысяч сел и деревень, 32тыс. промышленных предприятий, 98 тысяч колхозов и 1876 совхозов уничтожено. По подсчетам коммиссии 30% национального богатства СССР было уничтожено. Помимо всего этого колоссальные людские потери, а это специалисты, рабочие, врачи, учителя, люди на обучение которых СССР потратил деньги и время и вместо того чтобы реализовать их потенциал в целях развития государства они были убиты. А после войны все то что было разрушено пришлось посстанавливать. Инфраструктуру, жилье, рабочие места для людей, школы и дошкольные учреждения для детей Больницы, аптеки, лекарства, дороги, электрическое снабжение и отопление, заводы и фабрики с артелями которые будут выпускать товары первой необходжимости, вроде примитивных теплых вещей и обуви. И все это надо было делать быстро и много и уж о фасоне и последних тенденциях моды речи не шло, шла речь о выживании. США с которыми любят сравнивать СССР некоторые неадекваты еще во время ПМВ озолотились и в США за 4 года ПМВ повилось 22 тысячи долларовых миллионеров и миллиардеров, те кто официально зарегестрировал свои доходы. Во время ВМВ они еще раз озолотились, но намного больше. И при этом бомбардировкам территория США не подвергалась, за всю войну их пытались бомбить только японцы, в результате этих бомбардировок погибли, кажется 8 человек. Ни один дом, ни одна больница, ни один город не пострадали и жителям США не надо было восстанавливать из руин часть страны. Естественно при таких вводных данных у них там все было хорошо и красиво. Но дело не в СССР и США, а в том что война была тут, а не там

На той войне погибло большинство Сталинского поколения,целый пласт людей с уникальным мышлением и мировоззрением,эти люди были золотом нашей страны,я хоть и Сталинист,но все равно не могу ему простить того,что он не отомстил за 27+миллионов душ уничтоженных на той войне,изобретение америкосами ядерки которую они смело продемонстрировали на японии,конечно очень сильно повлияло на геополитические решения Сталина,по сути запад тогда никак не ответил за 27 миллионов людей,все что произошло тогда сошло им с рук.

@@Lilianna_K война с японцами не была прогулкой для американских солдат. Каждый остров который они штурмом брали обходился немалой кровью, при том что до японских островов домашней группы американцы не добрались. Плюс до ядерных бомбардировок японские города бомбились регулярно обычеыми бомбами при помощи сотен самолётов, которые сбивали десятками. Дешевле и проще было сделать одну бомбу, погрузить её на один самолет, но даже после бомбардировок Япония продолжила войну

@@NYC760 Comrade, the experiment was a collosal failure. Stalin shouldve been enough to show ML doesnt work. How many millions of dead people do we need to realise we cant achieve a utopia that way? Europe is severely flawed and still capitalist, but the left still has enough of a foothold and our social safety nets are okay. This is the way forward. The proper revolution is a slow and steady one, using democracy and transparency, and also individual freedoms. The collective starts at at the individual after all. Capitalism will by itself show how bad of a system it is before it collapses on its own fundaments. It is inevitable. What we should NOT do is mindlessly kill people in the name of our ideology because we would be no better than religious fanatics. Arent we against religion? Then lets not make the mistakes they make.

Недооценённое, но одновременно и переоценённое время. Одними хается за абстрактную диктатуру и мнимый культ личности, другими ностальгично чествуется как лучший период истории. Я считаю надо оценивать Сталинский СССР не идеалистически, а сравнивая и анализируя. Это было тяжёлое время, была пережита война и несколько голодов. Страна находилась в международной опале, неоднократными были попытки развалить её как снаружи, так и изнутри. Социализм в России зародился преждевременно, уж настолько бед страна успела повидать, что народ отказался даже переходить к капитализму. Народ не был готовым к такому подарку обстоятельств, как первое в мире трудовое государство рабочей демократии, во власть пробрались оппортунисты, со временем реставрировавшие рынок в однажды честной и человеколюбивой стране. Но несмотря на все тяготы, даже в первые Ленинские годы разрухи и безграмотности, когда советская власть только начинала лечить имперские раны и превращать тюрьму народов в союз народов, жизнь шла другим ключом. Человек человеку был друг, а не волк. Люди разных народов работали сообща на общее благо, громили интервентов в гражданскую войну, делали немыслимое и индустриализовывали аграрную страну на великих стройках. Люди жили скромно, а местами бедно, но советская ли власть привела нищих к нищете? Только лишь с революцией Октября труд человека стал принадлежать ему и ему только, весь рабочий народ СССР трудился на своё же, народное благо и ни доли созданного им не уходило в карман праздных предпринимателей. Надо отдать должное Сталину за всё это, а не боготворить его, как делают некоторые. В первую очередь он был не "великим вождём" или хозяйственником, а марксистом, человеком науки, применяющим эту сложную науку на не менее сложные времена.

Сильный комментарий, редко такие увидишь на этой платформе, декоммунизация поразила умы масс. Лично я не перестану романтизировать СССР времён его зарождения и сталинский период, несмотря на все его недостатки, это по настоящему революционное государство во всём, давшее надежду многим другим народам на светлое будущее без эксплуатации труда одного класса другим.

@@testmaxfadв чем он террорист? Гулаг? Так США тоже ссылали в местные аналоги людей и об этом ничего не говорят. Это была нормальная практика стран 20-го века, только Германия это использовала действительно как средство обесчеловечивания и медленного убийства людей. Одни только газовые камеры чего стоят. А СССР в тех же Соловках организовывал в лагерях культурно-массовые мероприятия, а людей, что заключенных просто так мучили и убивали наказывали так же жестко и сами становились заключенными. И лагеря как раз очень помогли построить страну за столь малый промежуток времени. Да, может быть это жестоко по современным меркам, но что нужно было делать Сталину когда страна после Революции только-только начала развиваться, а потом ее разрушили нацисты? Хотя, зачем я пишу человеку с сатанинской символикой? Будет он чет говорить про терроризм ну-ну

А это и есть оригинальные цветные фотографии, возможно немного улучшенные фотошопом. Майнхоф снимал на хорошую камеру. Дело в том, что есть и несколько видео, с которых, возможно, и были сделаны некоторые фотографий. Можете и сами их отыскать.

@@rozachernushchernush5549 Still, 27 million is the wrong number. This amount appeared in the later years of the USSR as part of a political struggle. The most reliable casualty number is closer to 16 million dead, include: 11.5 million direct military casualties killed and dead (including those killed in captivity). 4.5 million direct civilian losses, including Soviet citizens who were taken to Germany for forced labor and died there, losses among the militia, bombing victims, blockade victims, genocide victims of the local population in the occupied territories, and others.

The Second World War and the German occupation had a heavy impact on the USSR. Old-timers said that after the war of 1941-1945, something seemed to break in the iron body of the country, and it was never able to recover to the pre-war level. It seems to me that the feeling of such a breakdown can be felt from these photographs.

Today Moscow is incredibly clean, well kept, beautiful, safe and without homeless, thugs or drug addicts. Watch Sergey Baklykov's channel where for hours at a time he walks the streets of Moscow, St. Petersburg and 70 other Russian cities, and you'll see that Russians cities put US/European cities to shame.

few years before those pictures were taken WW2 killed 26,000,000 Soviet people and destroyed large parts of inhabited regions and after the war the USSR got zero help in reconstruction compared to Western Europe and was asked to repay the aid they were given during the war. they finished repayments in the 1970s.

In the Soviet Union, there was no need for millions of advertising blocks that would spoil the look of cities and towns. There are so few people on the streets because many were killed as a result of the genocide organized by the Third Reich.

If you look video from Germany's Nazi era, you'll also see happy people enjoying their lives. It doesn't prove anything. I grew up in Siberia and I spend 24 years of my lifer there. My ancestors were sent to Siberia by force.

@@kkkgavr there is bunch of evidence that Stalin's era USSR development was based on forced labor. There were policies in place to make this happen. Peasants were denied in issuing passports so they can't leave their village and forced to work on land. There was a network of working camps (gulags) which existence was not denied even by soviet bureaucracy. There were forced deportations by ethnicity. All these policies were not denied by soviet leadership - so we can't claim it's propaganda. You can't just label things "propaganda" when there are publicly available documents with signature of Stalin on it.

Let's just say all soviet states were more powerful and modern than today under soviet rule. They were all also nuclear powers by default. But Ukraine and Kazakhstan had soviet warheads for a while and Kazakhstan was soviet union completely for 6 days!

Даже после разрушительной ВОВ,благодаря решениям Сталина - страну по факту на половину лежащую в руинах - за 10 лет подняли и отстроили по новой!!!Гляньте на фото чёрт возьми. Нет на них толп голодающих,расстрелов,несчастных бедняков. СССР при Сталине именно что развивался ударными темпами и ВСЕМ гражданам,хорошо жилось.Всё было.Дома,крыша над головой,работа,заработок,чё пожрать,что одеть и т.д..Да,может по современным меркам не было зажиточной роскоши,но оно и не надо было по факту никому.А уж байки про то что советы как то ущемляли украинский язык-такая же ахинея. В Киеве больше половины вывесок на украинском.литературу и газеты выпускали-на украинском. Там вообще в один период проводили украинизацию...за то теперь "благодарные" ххлы орут что за мову расстреливали.Уроды.Всю великую историю Советскую и Российскую постоянно пытаются обхаить,исказить,переврать.

Millions of people were killed in the UdSSR, this part of history is well documented and shouldn't be just ignored. Also no one denies that socialism and planned economy works great for the first 10-30 years. But it's not sustainable and will always fail because the overhead of the centralised planning is way too high and the plan itself is never accurate enough to sustain the economy of a whole country. Market economy is the only way.

@@SilverLPs People died mostly in war. About 30 million civilians and military personnel were killed and tortured by hitler's nazis, while hitler himself was entirely a product of the West. It was the West that allowed and helped hitler come to power, it was the West that set hitler against the USSR. Were there repressions in the USSR from which people suffered? They certainly were. But in the USSR they didn’t kill or shoot people just for fun. Traitors, spies and revolutionaries who wanted to destroy the country during a difficult period for it were subjected to purges. What should have been done with them? Put them in prison so that the rest of the citizens can supply them with food, things, etc. for life? No. They deserved to die and personally I don’t think it’s a bad thing, because the punishment was deserved. Were there any mistakes that could have caused innocent people to suffer? Of course, but there are not millions of them, but much less. Again, it’s strange to hear some stories about the fact that millions of people were killed in the USSR, from a foreign citizen, whose ancestors destroyed much more of the indigenous population of America.

That is nine years after the end of the most devastating war in entire human history, which USSR carried on their own backs! 80 to 95% of the destroyed nazi forces and their european allies came at the hand of soviets. And at the end of this war, the barely scratched US and UK grouped up on the soviets, to make them continue spending for defense, even tho THEY actually made the defeat of Hitler possible. Such a heartbreaking situation for all those innocent soviet people that did all of this possible. US and UK were brutal villains. They should have shown more mercy!

Ну а сельский дурачок Горбачев, позволивший развалить страну на пару с психопатом Ельциным, это ужас. Сталин Сталин идеалы Ленина предал и стал красным монархом с культом личности, погибшие за революцию в ужаснейшей гражданской войне наверное в гробу переворачиыались. Именно он построил такое государство в котором власть попадала сельским дурочка как вы вырозелись, и именно в этом государстве эти дурочки могли так спокойно совершать ошибочную политику потому что от Царёв и буржуев элита их мало отличалась. Вполне логичный итог для такой системы которая требует обязательно сильного авторитарного вождя.

Чтоб заработать на машину в штатах работать нужно было около 10 месяцев, в СССР ну лет 10. Даже более того, мы тогда жили хуже чем до революции, судя по потреблению калорий.

People focusing on the infrastructure following a devastating war, but ignore that Russia still had free housing, education, healthcare, and all its basic needs. This is a country that had its industrial revolution in the 20th century, following a world war, a civil war, a famine, and was robbed of its gold and treasures by the British during the revolution. They still wear the tiaras of the Romanovs. And the Soviets did this without the access to international investment or foreign banks. It did it without colonies, slavery, or wage slaves. This is what independence looks like when you are pressed on all sides. Its not the walk in the park Americans had, with help from Russia.

If most of these pictures were taken in and before 1953, that would mean it had only been 36 years since the abolition of Russian Feudalism, and if the Soviets only put their first economic plan in 1921 (following the end of the civil war), it will have only been 32 years since their first National Economic Plan. Such an under-taught history in the US in general, and sadly, even amongst people who share the same aspiration for the global liberation of humanity. I'm not even an apologist for the Soviet state, yet, on a strictly economic and developmental progress basis, it was an impressive result.

5:15 - вид с Крутиц завораживает. Вроде бы большие дома и монастырь на своих местах, и даже дома первого плана (Крутицкая, 4 и 9). А вот четырехэтажного корпуса больнички по правой стороне нет - пару лет назад снесли и выстроили нечто подобное, раз восемь больше в объёме (не хотели, но так уж вышло...). И деревяшки, естественно, давно сгинули, и каланча с тюрьмой.

Actually, it’s not about USSR or Stalin, it’s about past, good old days, from 1950s to 1990s, when people were much better, when the world was much better place to live, than today in 2020s. P. S. And of course there are both objective and subjective reasons for this.

These were mass executions of innocent people, huge prisons for political prisoners, military attacks on Finland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and so on. Food and soap were sold only in limited quantities using coupons. People had lice in their hair, scabies, and tuberculosis. People don't have enough protein. Soviet people drank a lot of vodka and alcohol, which they prepared at home. Soviet people suffered from alcoholism and drank cheap cologne as alcohol. The most terrible serial killers and maniacs were in the USSR, for example, Mr. Chikatilo. Some people tried to break out of the Soviet Union and go abroad. For example, the Ovechkin family hijacked a large passenger plane and killed many people in order to leave the Soviet Union. By the way, the daughter and granddaughter of dictator Stalin received US citizenship; they did not want to live in the terrible Soviet Union that their ancestor built.

Фильмы смотришь 30-х годов, до начала войны. Смотришь на фотографии прадедушек, прабабушек, думаешь: "это мои предки, вот так они жили, я очень их люблю"...
