Holly crap. I've wheeled with this Gentleman, nicest guy you will EVER meet. Amazing stories and all around good guy and he is hard-core. Man had a stroke and literally a week later he was back out on the trail.

There are two brands of cars people didn't realise the quality until lately. Studebaker and AMC are the two. I drove AMC as an over the road salesman putting sixty thousand miles per year on them. Kept them three years and never had a major repair. Never had an oil burner, and always got great gas mileage. I do miss AMC. The six cylinder Jeep had before Chrysler put V six in them is the same motor AMC used. It was a seven main bearing engine and very good. Studebaker also had very high quality cars and it is a shame the big three conspired to put them both out of business.

That Stude engine is a beast. It's massively overengineered. It's a heavy lump compared to the power you get but they are damn near indestructible. High nickel content in the block so the bores hardly wear.

Great to see the Studebaker V8 transplant! Here's a bit of stuff I remember from my own Studebaker days in the sixties. The bypass oil filter was used up through mid 1962 when they went to a full flow. That side draft 2 barrel is a Stromberg WW and was used in the pre-Lark days. The swing pedals are also Studebaker (distinctive pedal pads) from 1961 or later. The instrument panel is sporting 1963 gauges. If you wanted, you could install a later carb on the manifold, or switch to a four barrel WCFB, or better yet, a 1962 and up manifold and an AFB carb. Finally, Studebaker was big on strength, with the basic engine designed for compression ratios up to 15:1. The engineers figured on higher octane gas for improved performance, but the industry went to larger displacements. The block had a higher chromium content than others, and all of the V8 cranks and rods, as well as rocker arms were forged steel. Thanks for the awakened memories!

Wheeled behind Tom the week before at Trail Jam at Naches, Wa. Tom and his brother were fun to hang out with.

I've wheeled with Tom a couple times at PNW4WDA Trail Jamboree. He's a super cool ol cat! And that's the hat he lost briefly when he had a little tumble... I found it for him. Looks like he's doing well.

Old school Jeep, reminds me of my Dad's. He kept the flathead four but put the steering gear and column out of a Mustang in it.

The cleanest Willys flat fender jeep I’ve ever seen for sure!! I’m 42 years old and ever since I was 8 or 9 years old the very first time I seen one I was yelling at my dad what was that cool looking vehicle back there dad of course dad didn’t see it so I asked him can we go back so we can find out what it was?? Dad was kinda pissed and wondering why I was flipping out so bad over some vehicle but he thought since he had never seen me so excited over some vehicle and he was kinda curious also now because I was just a flipping out over it!! So we get back and he was what one are you talking about?? I was like it’s on the other side of that building but I had thought that maybe the guy had left already and we missed it!! So we pulled over to the other side of the building and I’m pretty sure I just jumped out of the truck before he had even got stopped!! It had some 33” tires on it!! It was an old brown color!! I kept asking dad what is it?? He said that’s an old willys jeep!!! When he said willys I thought that was one of the coolest names for a vehicle ever!! I was like dad how come we never see more of these cool Jeep’s around?? He was like well here in Iowa because of all the salt and brine that they put on the roads during winter has eaten all them up!! I was like what are you talking about?? As he goes on to exsplain it better to me I was so disappointed that they were all rusted out!! I think on the way back home I had asked my dad so many questions about them that he was sick of hearing about it!! Ever since that day I’ve always wanted one for sure!! They have the coolest name ever, they are a shorter wheel base witch is just awesome for off road stuff, they get around so well in any kind of terrain, and have all the needed power you could need also!!! I just absolutely love them things!! Both my dad and his dad witch is my grandpa have had two or three different Jeep’s over the years witch were the closest thing we have ever gotten to owning a willys!!! My dad and grandpa had the CJ-8, CJ-7, and my grandpa had one of the CJ-5s witch they weren’t no flat fender willys but close I always would say!! I’ve looked for years and years for an old Willy and every time I would find one for sale it would be either all rusted out and they would want a fortune for all the rust or they would be so high priced that a person would have to take out a big loan for one and the banks wouldn’t like that for sure!! They always thought well if you don’t end up paying us for the full loan amount and they were to get it they would be like who in the heck would want this big old pile of rust bucket?? Here in Iowa I have ran across two or three of them that were in pretty decent shape but the owners would always say not for sale sorry!! If any one out there has one and would like to sell one I don’t even care if it doesn’t run just as long as most the stuff is there and not a big pile of rust I would definitely be interested in one for sure!!! The frame needs to be in good shape also!! Any one out there that does please let me no thanks!!! Awesome video buddy!!

Steering wheel looks like the one my Dad had in his '59 Plymouth, although I had a '58 and I think that wheel was the same too (both cheaper models, the Furies had fancier, padded, ones).

Very cool. I presently drive a 'flattie' with Kenne Bell equipped Buick 225 'Odd Fire' V6 (another excellent engine swap), 4 speed with Warn OD, same (1965) Mustang radiator.

That sure is a sweet 4 x 4.

Bill Mauldin, the Korean War correspondent, wrote a story about this very same vehicle: "The Affair of the Wayward Jeep." (Saturday Evening Post, 6/27/53)

In the early 60's the Studebaker V/8 was very popular before the small block Ford.

That thing is a bad lil hot rod and it's very well sorted out.

My mom made the first Bikini top for my CJ-2A back in 1962 when nobody had them. A shame we didn't patent it at that time

Growing up i never hung with people my age i hung with people like him they'd enjoy my help and id enjoy the lessons i learned from the older men that was building and running there trucks and hotrods 😂😂😂😂

I've always said if Jeep (or anyone else) would start making Flat Fenders again they wouldn't be able to make them fast enough to keep up with demand.

The split case Warn winch is not dependable. In a heavy pull they will split their case breaking the castings.
