Edit: 4th January 2021 RIP Ted. We still miss you!
Video taken in September 2019:
It's a sadly familiar story. Due to ill health, our very good friend Ted is unable to complete this amazing restoration. Ted's wish was to sell his bike, but only after he could hear it start again.
Geoff very kindly offered to try and get the bike running again and I called by with my camera to capture the event.
As you will see, it has been meticulously restored over a number of years but is still to be completed.
Here are a few details that we know of the motorcycle:
This was a no-expense spared restoration with many parts being outsourced to high-quality companies:
The engine has been completely rebuilt from the crankshaft up by a known BMW expert who restored 2 other motorcycles.
- The pistons were brand new prior to starting this bike in the video (link below)
- The gearbox has also been recently completely rebuilt at a considerable expense.
- A receipt of the recent work is also included for your information and will accompany the bike.
- The frame has been professionally painted
- The pin striping was completed by local professional, Mitch Kim
- A new wiring harness was fitted and tested, although some of the wires have been disconnected
- The carburetors are new and we understand they were machined to fit this motorcycle
- The tool kit that is shown in the video is also included
- Some other receipts, paperwork and any spare parts that can be found will be included & shipped with the bike
Known issues with the bike:
- As you will see from the video (linked below), there is a problem with the kickstarter not fully engaging.
- The right hand foot peg is missing
- A battery is not connected and needs to be replaced
- The motorcycle is hard to lift onto the main / center stand and this may need some adjusting
- Some final electrical work will be required to complete the wiring.
- A new wiring harness was fitted some time ago and the electrical system tested (lights, etc), but some wires have since been disconnected
- There is some notable paint and chrome damage caused by leaking battery acid
- There are also some other small imperfections caused by the bike sitting in the garage for some time
Video of the bike running:
- This is a video of the bike running. It was taken in September 2019.

Some motorcycles just transcend a title of ‘good looking motorcycle’ and verge into art. Glorious thing!

The sound of persistently pumping a reluctant kickstarter pulls me back to my youth; the only thing missing are the accompanying sounds of powerful and often painful profanities. Alliteration intended.

Yet another beautiful motorcycle! these truly look like very stately motorcycles. Hence being part of many motorcades back in the day.

I had one of those 30 years ago. It was the later variant with full width hubs and torpedo mufflers. Probabely the most beautiful bike I ever owned. And by the way, it always needs quite some effort to get it on the main stand. To be honest, it cant compete with contemporary brit bikes when ridden solo, but it performs excellent and is great fun when used with a sidecar.

Thanks Mick. Yes I agree, it’s a really cool timeless looking bike. Geoff and I were just chatting about how different the German bikes looked to the British bikes from the 50s. It’s probably not the fastest bike in the world, but it will probably go all day :-) Best wishes, Mike

Hi Mike! Ok I will have to admit that before Brit bikes I got into old BMWs. That said a few things about this and many other /2s. When the kick starter does that the gear box needs to come apart to fix asap. Continuing to use it will make matters worse. The gear box comes out very easily and there are few people on your side of the county that are very talented with them. Email me and I will set you in touch with them. To start them cold you tickle for a slow count of two. 2-3 priming kicks without the ignition on and then 1/4 throttle (that should hold itself in that position as it is like an early cruse control) Then a kick down with the ignition on. She should fire right up. These are a joy to ride and while not barn burners they do provide a firm yet comfy ride that is equally good in the twistys as long as you do not out run your brakes.. Ride on!

Hi Eric. Thanks a lot for The starting information. That helped a lot. Yes, it’s a really cool bike. It will be a shame to see it go, like the Zündapp, but it needs to go to someone who can give it the TLC it deserves. Cheers, Mike

Some years ago I was with a crowd of BMW's touring the alps (me on the Vincent) when on one of the BMW's the housing of the clown and bevel gear came loose and lost its oil. He noticed soon enough so no big damage happend. But I dared to say 'wouldn't have happend with a chain drive'. That night for dinner I Was sitting on a far away table all by myself...

One thing I've never been able to work out is the longstanding criticism of shaft drives, whether they be less so wth BMWs, more so with Moto Guzzi and vintage MVs. Do they yield a slower response, or a too-noticeable weight gain, or an imbalance to the sides of the bike, or a greater loss to the bhp at the rear wheel -- or all of these? Or something else? I really like this channel by the way. I've only been subscribed here a wee while (with a soft brush).
