90 mph on cross ply tyres, leaf springs and drum brakes. Respect.

Absolutely and no satellite phone either! If they got stuck or broke down they really were on their own.

The 4L "Blue Riband" engine propelled the car to 106mph at Brooklands (or what was left of it) so 90mph would have been a fair cruising speed, but 14 - 16mpg consumption! You'd need to be sitting in an Armstrong-Siddeley Star Sapphire or a Daimler Majestic Major to better the Super Snipe.

11:05, "The Humber was designed with lots of clearance for just such emergencies". Yes, I'm sure the designers foresaw many, many customers using primitive ferries in Africa! Marvellous stuff. I'm amazed they managed to get such good footage amongst their travails. All in all a great achievement, with British understatement, Well Done Chaps!

I am driving my super snipe MK3 at least once a week, what to clearance, If I need to get under the car with a grease gun, I do not need to lift the car up, it has clearance greater than some modern 4x4s.

I competed in Brock Yate's One Lap of America in 1985, & we finished 4th overall (1st two wheel drive vehicle to cross the line) - 8,800 miles in 8 days, running through all outer border states of the continuous 48 - we were a 3 driver team. Went from black ice in Michigan to deep snow at 3 a.m. in the Rockies - no guardrails - ice in upper Midwest and upstate New York later - 98 degree humid heat in Bayou country of Louisiana - smoke / limited visibility in the Carolinas from forest fires...ran the car 24/7 - took turns grabbing naps in back seat - navigator made sure driver stayed awake - exhaustion & ability to drive really compromised by day 6 on through finish late in day 8 - but at least the roads were mostly paved - the above pales by comparison to what these chaps in the Humber Super Snipe went through in this video - an impressive feat for both those men & their machine!!

Bryan Weston It sounds like you had an incredible adventure, but as you say the adventures of old were a different breed. Reliability wasn’t exactly a byword to describe cars of the day, poor roads if there were roads at all, no satellite communications and very little in the way of backup if it all went wrong. I take my hat off to them.

At the 6.21 mark the car that is stuck in the sand is an Austin A90. Can tell by the flying A motif on the bonnet, the shape of the windows and the tail end. That was Richard Pape,s Car who did the Cape Cold to Cape Hot.

I think the VW kombi probably would be better for this long journey, as it was air cool engine. The UK for some reason didn't have any air cool engines, i hope I'm wrong.

@@microcloudhd9231 I agree with you, young kids these days sounding off about how bad colonialism is don’t realise that the British empire held peace across a lot of now war torn countries. The first thing a country does when it gains independence is sink into civil war.
