On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago IL on 7-30-20.
We're looking at a 1953 Buick Skylark Convertible in Red Paint. The car comes with the factory V8 “Fireball V Eight” engine.
The car's Owner is Ken Nagel. Ken’s had this car since 2006. He shares details on this car that in 1953 is was Buick’s 50th Anniversary, so they “chopped” the windshield to give the car a lower look. This car looks “showroom” new.
If you're interested in seeing this car in Ken's collection, see this link.

@@richardmorris7063 hiya Rich... The original post meant in '53... Buick had the Skylark, Cadillac had the Eldo and Olds had the Fiesta 98... All were essentially factory customs, having the first wraparound windshields, sectioned bodies and specific interiors... And each of them was about twice the price of their respective brand's top of the line. Although, a '57 Bonnie is also KILLER!

When I was about 15 or 16 I went with my uncle up between Gadsden and Anniston Alabama . He bought one of these and it was a beautiful car . The paint was faded but all of thar chrome made an impression on a young boy . He got in it , cranked it up and drove it up on the trailer . Never forget that experience . It was also a red one with a white top . He bought it to resale . I never got to see it again but will never forget it .

Car is beautiful !!! I love the price point history. Back in '64, there was a Chevrolet dealership not far from where i lived. Rode my bicycle there with some friends then when i was like 7 and saw a Sting Ray priced over $5000. I asked my Dad at dinner "How can a car cost so much ?'' Staggering amount of money to me. This Skylark was at that price point over 10 years earlier !!

There were 3 GM anniversary cars for 1953, the Cadillac Eldorado, the Oldsmobile Fiesta, and of course the Buick Skylark. The windows were operated by hydraulic rams that were filled with brake fluid and were powered by the convertible top motor. Unfortunately if one of the window rams developed a leak the brake fluid would eat the paint finish. I have once owned a 1954 Hudson Super Wasp convertible with the same system, there were only 19 units made of that car. The design for the Skylark came by accident. One of the staff designers at Buick was playing with ideas of how to modify or customize a Roadmaster for himself. The `53 Skylark was indeed beautiful and impressive.

I love that swoop down design on the side. The 61-67 models became straight lines and lost those but they came back in 68. Very nice 53 though, I’ve only seen one once at the National automobile museum in Reno.

...hey-ya, Lou... ...it certainly must be really hard work interviewing one of the consummate gentlemen in the world of car collectors, Ken Nagel... ...he is so quietly knowledgeable about his treasured collection; and exhibits the same elegant, yet accessible, refinement exhibited in his stable of "amazingness"... ...just a couple of points...the notation of "Dynaflow" refers to the then-relatively new 2-speed automatic transmission ( intro'd in '48 as an option on the Roadmasters only, then gradually includrdon the Century, Super and Special lines....( and not to air-conditioning, which wasn't offered on this nor the final Skylark Limited Edition in '54)... ...as Ken noted, this rakish convertible was considered outrageously expensive compared to the regular Roadmaster ($5k vs. $3,200)... ...GM brought out 2 other limited edition cars, the Olds Fiesta ( in coupe and convertible), and the Cadillac Series 62 Eldorado ( convertible only)...the Buick outsold both of the others, but demand remained so low, again, in '54 that GM pulled the plug on the marque... ...about the only thing I noticed was the clock not running...please pass on that there is a gentleman in west suburban Chicago with a KZfaq channel on vintage TV, Stereos and such, who also is able to refurbish auto clocks... ...Ken strikes me as one who would appreciate getting his cars as perfect as they can be... ...and as ever, Lou, hope you didn't break too much of a sweat on this episode... Cheers, my friend...

@@loucostabile. Thanks Lou. And I have just watched your video on the 54!.... The 54 remains one of my all time favourite cars... In some of the early episodes of Peyton Place, there is a 54. It never moves and is always parked outside the courthouse. It is immaculate and in its tenth or eleventh year. I can only assume that it belonged to a cast member / production crew.

Look at pre-war cars. The chopped top look started with them. These Buicks are some of the most beautiful cars made. I think Packard made a Caribbean that looks like this Buick. My grandfather had a 56 Roadmaster.

Another beautiful Buick from Ken's awesome collection . The chrome toothy grille is a highlight, as is the chrome in the dashboard. Sorry to say, but I am not much of a fan for continental kits, mainly because they look awkward in side profile. He mentioned he has 28 Buicks in his his collection. How many have you shown us so far? I hope there is more to come. My late Uncle Dave was a 'Buick man' and his cars were awesome. Thanks for another nice video Lou!
