In this video I'll show you how to install the adapter I purchased from Vintage Metal Works (link below) that mates the 235 to the 5 speed (T5) transmission from a 94 Chevy S-10. This also shows the procedure for installing a clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing. I once changed a clutch laying on my back in a gravel driveway with my mother's broom handle as an alignment tool. I bought her a new broom afterwards.

I have a 1953 Chevy truck 1/2 ton, I'm going to do the same. Just getting all the parts together. The 235 engine being rebuild right now. The T-5 is all ready rebuilt. I am so tired of the 3 speed setup.

I didn’t need an adapter plate on my 56 3100. I had to change the input shaft to a jeep input shaft and shorten the bearing retainer and also shorten the tip of the input shaft. Bolted right in.

Just as you are starting to snug the pressure plate bolts but the disc can still move a bit, I like to tap the aligning tool up, down, left and right, to ensure it is centered. The tool should slip in and out with no difficulty. The slight bolt tension will hold it from moving out of alignment as you tighten the pressure plate bolts. These do need to be turned in evenly to prevent bending the pressure plate. Once you get them all snugged down, I like to remove the bolts one at a time to put loctite on the threads for extra insurance.

I have no idea what the clutch specs would be. I just went into their shop and told them what I was looking for and they built me a clutch... I think it was $80 and it took about an hour.

Just curious is that an early 235 ? My 235 was out of 56 chevy and bolt holes for trans doesn't need adapter. Any one doing swap needs to do research first. Those spline tools were around back in the late 60s. Used an actual input shaft for alignment, still have somewhere in archives of garage. Lol

Leave your split tool in !, tighten pressure plate up then pull the tool just before placing trans in

I have a 1955 3100 1st series. With a 235 and 4 speed on the floor looking to go this exact setup with the T5 tranny. What rear end will work knowing I have to go with a shorter one?

I have heard that Ford Explorer is the right gear and width for those old Chevy trucks. It really depends on what wheel and tire set up you run. Of course you can cut and fabricate almost anything but I'm kinda' a "what will bolt right up" guy... get your measurements and figure out your wheels. Then find a rear end... chevy ford whatever with a good highway gear and the right width. You can play with wheel offset too after you get the rear end installed... Im just saying if you go with something too wide you'll be limited on your wheel and tire width... hope that helps.

How about a 55 second series diff. Actually S10 blazer 4 wheel drive diff . Need early with drum brakes then you can keep original master cylinder setup.

Great video. Wouldn't it be easier to just remove the Bell Housing and spark plugs for the clutch and pressure plate install?

I think the flywheel has to be removed to remove bolts behind it that hold the bell housing on.

I know it is a hydrostatic transmission but know very little about them
