Not only was the Sunbeam Talbot an extremely good looking car, the Alpine and Saloon versions with the same motor, were winners of many rally's. The 1955 Monte Carlo Rally was a notable one. [ outright winner]. Some purist's moan that the motor was nothing more than a Hillman 14 engine, transplanted for manufacturing convenience into the Sunbeam. In actual fact, the motor was refined , and the capacity increased with a larger bore. The strength of the Sunbeam always, is the simplicity of a rugged well engineered unit which delivers power effortlessly: it is a long stroke engine with duralumin connecting rods , and it will motor all day and all night at legal limits without stress. The ergonomics and finish of the Sunbeam Talbot are to a high standard, and these days they are a very special vehicle to own.

Could not agree more - my family owned a 1949 Mark 1 now quite a rarity which I learnt to drive on after buying it second-hand with 44000 miles for £30 !.It took all the punishment a 17 year old could give it, loaded with friends and had excellent performance for the time. The passing years has done nothing to deter from a what was a very high quality car and looks more beautiful than ever .Would love to find another !.

Very nice . I recall my brother having a pale blue one in the U.K. back in the 60's , it had spats on the back I think ...the basic engine came from a Humber Hawk , a fairly big 4 cylinder .They were quite successful Rally Cars .

Thanks for the video! I think the VIN # identifies this car as a 1952 model Sunbeam Talbot MK II. The black steering wheel and dashboard knobs and trafficators are correct for the earliest ST 90s, but it has a MK III dashboard, ivory vent knobs, and a non standard electric tachometer. The dashboard is also steel and would have been painted the same colour as the exterior. The engine is an OHV ST90 MKII, and not quite the same as fitted to the Humber Hawks, which I think were flat heads at this time. Door pockets and toll compartment in the drivers leg well are missing or covered up. It also has a MKIII front bumper. All in all though, a very good job done on one of the best English cars of that era. I have the correct choke pull, panel light switch, start button and wiper switch knob for this car, plus other Sunbeam Talbot 90/Alpine parts, left over from when I owned a '55 Alpine MKIII. Also the correct bumper c/w overriders in terrible cond.

@@loucostabile Hi Lou, Thanks, and I have watched several of your videos. Over the years, I have owned 3 "toy" cars (toys, because I enjoy driving them), and the 55 Alpine MK III is the only car I regret parting with.

Sunbeam was originally a Wolverhampton company in the early days. They held several land speed record s in the 20s and 30s. There was tie up with the daraq French Company hence were the association came with Talbot. The company was eventually taken over by the Roots group of Coventry (Lord Roots)

I got here because I watch the TV program Father Brown on the local PBS channel. I googled What car does Bunty drive on Father Brown? The answer was 1951 Sunbeam-Talbot 90 Drophead Coupé [Series II]. Gorgeous little car and wanted to know more about it.

Oops! Forgot- production figure I saw back in the '70s put total prod of these cars, built from '52-56 at 12- 14000. STAR, (the Sunbeam Talbot Alpine Register) now has an accurate figure from the factory records, but I don't know it Not particularly rare then (except the Alpine- prod. 1588), but rare now. Vast majority were built for export, as LHD cars. The 'To Catch a Thief' car was an Alpine MK I.

The STAR Register shows this car with chassis number A3011366 LCX to be a Sunbeam Talbot 90 MK IIA Drop Head Convertible produced in 1953 and would originally have had an ivory steering wheel and dashboard knobs. Total production of this model from 1952 to 1954 5,397 units with approximately 25% Convertibles and 75% Saloons (Sedans). Total production of 90 MK I to MK III cars between 1950 and 1956 was 24,057 units.
