Disclaimer: Cigarette smoking KILLS more than 480,000 Americans each year. Cigarette smoking remains the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States. It is linked to heart disease, emphysema and cancer.
These TV commercials for Marlboro Cigarettes date to 1956. This was the era before the moment the famous "Marlboro Man" definitively emerged as a cowboy. In these ads, the figures promoting the cancer sticks are gentlemen and sportsmen. At :18, a Southern plantation owner in a string tie offers the "best cigarette west of Virginia" to viewers. At 1:33, the jingle "filter, flavor, flip top box...you get a lot to like with a Marlboro" accompanies a cowboy working on a ranch. At 2:33, a guest at the Beverly Hilton Hotel dives into the swimming pool and enjoys a Marlboro poolside. At 3:20, a fisherman smokes while casting a line. At 4:10, a private pilot smokes a cigarette after landing at a small airport. At 5:11, a rock climber relaxes after scaling a cliff, by smoking a nice lung-destroying Marlboro.
We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! See something interesting? Tell people what it is and what they can see by writing something for example: "01:00:12:00 -- President Roosevelt is seen meeting with Winston Churchill at the Quebec Conference."
This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD, 2k and 4k. For more information visit www.PeriscopeFilm.com

Not exactly. The pharmaceutical industry was running advertisements pretty aggressively for as long as there have been advertisements. When the tobacco industry was stopped from showing ads on television, they were largely replaced by anti-smoking/drug campaign ads and honestly, that is a good thing and has yielding real positive results.

It's funny how Marlboro were actually considered by the public to be ladies' cigarettes before the Marlboro Man advertisements came along. Prior to that campaign, most men smoked Camels and Lucky Strike, but the Marlboro Man changed the image completely and henceforth they were considered "manly" smokes. At the time of these commercials filtered cigarettes were still considered "wimpy", and I don't believe Marlboros ever came in an unfiltered version. But who is to argue what's good for you when 4 out of 5 doctors smoke unfiltered Camels 🤣🤣🤣

4:13 The Cessna 172. My flight instructor was also an A&P mechanic. He showed me one day why smoking in a Cessna 172 was a really bad idea (besides the basics like that tobacco smoke ruins everything-bearings on gyroscopes, and aero-pneumatic instruments like the altimeter and rate of climb indicator, and leaves conductive deposits on electronics like the radio stack): we were tearing down a Cessna 172 for its annual inspection. We were removing the interior trim piece that covers the side of the fuselage interior between the instrument panel and the pilot's side door. It also had the ashtray in it. Directly behind the ashtray was the fuel line that goes from the wing tank to the gascolator and fuel selector in the cockpit 🤣

In college I wrote a paper about cigarette smoking. To put things in perspective, if you smoked just one pack a day, every day for a year, you will have smoked 7,300 cigarettes. A regular cigarette is 3.3 inches long so that adds up to 24,090 inches, which adds up to 2,007.5 feet, which is over 1/3 of a mile.

I always found it interesting that the tobacco companies used the words "flavor" or "taste" to describe the high that nicotine gave. They make it sound like food which I'm certain was their intention. I never heard of anyone that smokes other drugs such as marijuana, crack, or heroin describe the effect as "flavor" or "taste". I also noticed those ads showed some older smokers. Any tobacco print ads in recent history never shows anyone over 30 using their products.

Our "smoking section" was around the corner out a set of doors at the end of one of the wings of the school where there was a stairwell. You could go around the end and there were no windows only two brick walls in a 90 degree angle, perfect place to hide where nobody could see you. Of course the Vice Principal eventually got wise to it because the door locked when you closed it so we always stuck a pen in the door. One day came around the corner and there he was holding the pen and smiling at us. "What were you boys doing out there"? That was the end of that. Lasted almost a whole school year though 😂

Wow, that's crazy, and I thought cigarettes were expensive in New York. They are about $12-13 for a pack of 20 in the premium brands. Even with the exchange rate and converting a 30 pack to 20 (they don't come in 30 packs here), that's about $22 USD for a pack of 20. There are still some states here where they are relatively cheap. Last time I was in Ohio they were about $7 a pack.

this was my brand for twenty years. the box was a lot harder to crush but they were a bit less product in each cigarette so you either gonna brake the last four in your soft pack or you gonna get two less cigs if you get the box. thus i went with the box. coulda bought a new car at today's prices, maybe two. been clean for 19 years now though thank God. notice the sometimes subliminal message; like when the fisherman put the pack in the net as if to say "it's a good catch". and of course the not so subtle ones like the girls ;) anyway i aint so many people smokin in a LONG time. seem strange now actually even though i grew up with a grandparent and uncles and so forth smoking a pack a day. thanks for making me think of them and not just feeling the regret of wasting all that cash on those things.

Smoking is a terrible habit and certainly isn't healthy. But the idea that cancer is guaranteed from smoking is 100 % hype. Our government officials that have attacked tobacco companies certainly didn't do so because they care about your health. It was all about raising taxes. I'll never advocate smoking. But it's worth noting that big tobacco made a terrible mistake in the 1990s when they stopped lobbying Washington. As soon as the lobbyists money dried up is right when they got attacked by hot shot California attorneys.

My grandfather died of esophageal and lung cancer and never smoked a day in his life. It was over 20 years ago so the medical expertise wasn't as good, but they think it started in his esophagus then spread, from a combination of a history of bad reflux and exposure to the chemicals at the shop he worked in. My great aunt smoked like a chimney until she was in her 80's, and not even exaggerating got literally bombed on wine and gin and tonics daily until the day she died and lived to be 94. But then her husband, my grandmother's brother, drank a fifth of Barton's whiskey every day and dropped dead at 57, which was before I was born so I only ever heard stories which could have been exaggerated and the dude could have just had a bad heart. The shit is all genetics to some degree and random chance. My aunt who is the daughter of my grandfather that died of cancer smokes a couple packs of mini cigars a day and is 74 years old and in fine health, and my dad, her brother, never smoked or drank and dropped at 66 from a heart attack. All blood related and all over the place. I'm 46 and smoke a pack a day but don't drink much anymore. Still getting a clean bill of health, but we will see what the future holds 🤞

@@digitalfootballer9032 I'm not a Dr by any stretch of the imagination, but I totally agree that it's a combination of genetics and other lifestyle factors. Bad Cholesterol is by far the more deadly. Heart attacks at 57 happen when men pay no regard to what they're eating and get very little exercise, and most of all, disregard regular doctor visits. High blood pressure is a silent killer too. My great Grandfather lived to be 102 years old. He was a retired coal miner from back WAY before any OSHA standards even existed. And he smoked Camel non filters most of his life. His daughter, my grandmother made him start smoking the filter camels back when I was just a kid. I was around 10 so that would be around 1980. That would put him at 90 when he switched to filters. He would smoke first thing in the mornings with his coffee then smoke a few after his plate of eggs and bacon. Then he'd dip that powder snuff. "Brutons sweet snuff" and he spit in a tin can with a paper towel in it. Then after dinner he'd sit in his black vinyl chair and smoke camels again. Up until the day he passed away he still took care of himself. And would walk around the property every day regardless of cold or sweltering hot weather. And he never would complain about anything. Other than grunting and groaning lol. He was born in April 1890 and passed away peacefully on December 26th 1991 from natural causes. No heart attack, stroke, cancer, aneurysm or anything like that. He had breakfast, smoked a few camels then walked over to his favorite chair, sat down and quietly drifted off. I can only pray that I have such longevity and that I pass the way he did. With no pain or long suffering.

I don't much enjoy smoking myself, but there is a discernable flavour difference of different smoke, especially on the exhale and aftertaste. However, you have to be somebody who isn't too distracted by the pain, doesn't choke on the density, and likes tar flavour in everything they take in, because of course every kind of smoke has that in common. I much, MUCH prefer the flavour found in dry herb vape (heat the material in a small oven to bake the flavour and the drug into the air rather than burn it out).

we have to see the camels now... camel is the most classic american mega brand. lucky strikes are classic too but the company never took off. the current lucky strikes we have today were brought back some time in the 90s from a different company

Wow, did anyone else notice that everyone had a tattoo on their smoking hand ( not sure about the random hand with no body)? What does that represent, I wonder.

What's going on with the damn hand tattoos? In the 50s I would think it would be sailors and carnies getting tatted up, not regular, somewhat successful Joes.

Back then pro athletes smoked on the sidelines 😂. You actually still see it today in with footballers in some South American countries. There are also a handful of PGA golfers that smoke on the course.
