I am pathetic! I’m listening to a game played more than sixty four years ago and I recognize more players than I do when today’s fellows play.

This was Sal Maglie's final game with the Dodgers. The Yankees claimed him on waivers the next day, and he helped them wrap up the 1957 AL pennant. Maglie was a 1955 Giant, a 1956 Dodger, and a 1957 Yankee!

Really?? Pitching the way he was, it’s a wonder Brooklyn left him unprotected. It’s also a wonder the teams ahead of the Yankees on the waiver list passed on him. Baseball! BYW, the Barber was the Red Sox pitching coach in ‘67. Helped Lonborg win the Cy Young.

@@paultheaudaciousbradford6772 I believe the Dodgers tried to trade him to the Yankees, but couldn't reach a deal in time, so they waived him in the hopes some team would take his salary off their hands.

For Brooklyn Dodger fans, this was pretty much the end of the trail...it was foregone they were heading west to LA at the close of the season...talk about a sad time, and the slow deterioration of the great boro of Brooklyn...

End of the trail for Brooklyn- but end of so much more for Roy Campanella who was just months from becoming disabled.

Vin Scully-"Over 6,000 Knot-hole kids in attendance...We're delighted to have the youngsters here today..." You wonder if Scully and Jerry Doggett are starting to think that there will be no resolution that the Dodgers will get a new stadium. A lot of the fans were starting to think that the move to California was going to happen.

I think by the time this game was played [8/31/57], it was already a done deal. Horace Stoneham had already announced earlier in the month that the Giants were moving to S.F. and the National League made it clear that they wouldn't allow just one team to move to California [it wouldn't be financially feasible for teams to travel that far out west just to play a three-game series]. So the Dodgers move to L.A. was inevitable.

Horace Stoneham made the announcement 12 days before this game. O'Malley was still negotiating with Los Angeles and Brooklyn. He committed to L.A. on Oct. 8.

That was due to the fact that it was O'Malley that convinced Stoneman to move to San Francisco. Originally, Stoneman was moving the team to Minneapolis. They had a new stadium there (Metropolitan Stadium.) With St. Louis being the closest team to Los Angeles, O'Malley couldn't go to California by himself. He needed someone else.

Gotta be the worst performance of Koufax’s career. He throws just one pitch and turns a Dodger lead into a Dodger deficit.

amazingly...the Dodgers were still in contention for the pennant at the time of this broadcast...imagine if they had actually caught the Milwaukee Bravesto take the title...would O'Malley still have moved the team to Los Angeles at the completion of the series?
@hamburg13067 жыл бұрын
Will Drucker yes he would have moved to LA regardless.

The Giants officially announced their move to San Francisco 12 days before this game. Therefore, it was an absolute certainty that the Dodgers would follow them west due to the fact that the NL would not permit only one team to relocate to California.

Yes. It was already a done deal In August, but O'Malley told Scully ( and all his employees) to keep it quiet.
