My Dad started off on these about this time. He was so glad when the cabs came out Grandpa gave him all his old machinery and bought land in another state. The biggest he had was the 7700. Then he switched to the Massey 860 which was his last one before retiring.

I still remember the first time I ran a 55 combine, I was working for a fellow who gave me the opportunity, I was so excited to drive that combine I hardly slept the night before. no cab, dusty has hell,I enjoyed every minute of it. I run a 9600 on my farm today, so glad times have changed

I remember going home and the 1st shower just got the 1st layer off, then the 2nd shower would get you 1/2 clean, but still itchy! Lol

We ran a 1958 model 55 for several years in the early 70's. We only had about 250 acres of wheat at that time and it did a good job for what we needed it for. No major problems, just the regular maintenance that it required. Was a good machine.

They can, just don't want to when there's a cab with AC and stereo on newer stuff. Back then, this is all there was so you didn't get a choice.

I grew up on a 4020 with a sun shade, when I got to the 4430 (cab, no a.c) I thought is was living large! Then I got to a 4450 with A.C. and you couldn't get me outta the cab! Lol. Now, my tractor has a heated leather seat, climate control and drives itself. Granted, farming has its challenges in any decade, there's no doubt we are spoiled compared to our forefathers equipment. I worry about our reliance on satellites as a weak point. I like the simplicity of a chain drive "technology".

I grew up with a #55 combine. I spent lots of hours driving this machine. I think this picture shows a later version. Our steering wheel was vertical, not on an angle. The header and variable speed control levers were on a station in upper right of the tube around the operator platform. The video seems to show the transmission shift lever on the right rear of the seat. Ours was on the left rear of the seat, at the top of the steps coming to the operator platform. I think our tank was 45 bushels, We added an extension for 25 more bushels (seed crops, about 30#/bu). This mentions a John Deere engine. Our model had a Hercules engine, about 50 hp. We ran with a 12 foot header, using the belt same belt pickup as shown here. The primary crop was grass seed. Our machine was equipped with a spike tooth cylinder, not rasp bar (used in most applications where grain was the primary use). We usually ran about 1.5 mph, low end of range of 2nd gear, sometimes higher range of 1st gear in heavy crop. Other people in the area has a #45 after it came out, less expensive, 2" narrower cylinder (#55 had a 28" width?). Then came the #95, and later the #105.

Great info, I'm sure JD showed the shiny newest update of the model! So they changed the 55 controls... interesting. Thanks for letting us know

Dad bought one without a cab in the early 60’s then bought another late 60’s with a cab. The combine seemed so big back then

I was in my teens back in the late 70s early 80s. I remember helping the neighbor who had a 45 , you have to change the feeder housing not just the header. You have to unbolt the feeder from under the operator platform, not just pull the pins and unhook the hydraulic lines but unbolt and take a belt off. Only took half of the day to go from beans to corn and you had to change the screen to, by hand not flipping a switch.

Thanks👍. I don't just have memories of this but a wore out body from cleaning out sheep ,cows and some pig barns not to mention shoveling beans to the middle of a grain bin ,stacking 400 to 600 bales of hay on wagons a day picking up rocks for a farmer (I told my older brother I never wanted to see another rock, dang it I got out of school and worked for a mason block, bricks and😵stone ,now I'm almost 57 and work at a stone quarry😵😵😵😆. So I tell everyone that I still play with real Tonka toys😆. Stay safe my friend.

Right, You can barely keep the thresher full with a 12 row head in anything less than 60 bushel corn with biggest combines
