On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago IL on 10-8-23.
We're looking at a 1957 Plymouth Belvedere Convertible in White Paint. The car comes with the 301 CI V8 Engine and has a “push button” automatic transmission.
The car's Owner is Jay Hackleman. Jay’s had this car since 2021. Jay shares he heard the car was in Arizona and in the middle of a restoration, and fortunately has the skills to complete the restoration. He’s modified the engine, and this one sure drives nice, and gets lots of looks from people on the road.
ENJOY!

When I was young the late-50's "Forward Look" Plymouths with their big fins and tons of chrome were everywhere. All us young people wanted Mustangs and Camaro's. The old Plymouths were used up, rusted out and thrown away. Now they are rare birds and very cool. Thanks Jay Hackleman for preserving this piece of history, thanks Lou Costable for the video.

When I was 7 our neighbor had a very similar car that she would drive us to school and to various other places as my mother didn’t drive and Dad took our car to his job. She had a lead foot and I thought that’s how everyone drove. Great memories as usual from Lou.

It is true that this 1957 Plymouth Belvedere in white and with the large red stripe, which widens as it extends to the rear, will catch anyone's attention! Those rear lights on the fins in the shape of, as they call them, "Rabbit Ears", for me it is a compliment, since they attract a lot of attention. Also the huge chrome bumper with the shape of fins in the corners and the large windshield with that curved style, especially at the top. Nice interior with those black, white and red upholstery, along with its chrome trim indicators and unique speedometer. The final walk was calm and relaxing; It's like going back in time to the 50's. Congratulations to Mr. Hackleman for this magnificent restoration! Best regards, Lou!

Thanks for posting Lou. My dad had a '57 Plymouth. It was a four door sedan. It was a "plain Jane' Plaza model. No frills, nuthin!! Not even power steering. It was gold and very reliable. Those beautiful forward look MOPARS were prone to rusting and so many were built I must say the build quality was sub-standard. Rattles, squeaks and rust...Thanks for posting Lou! Have a blessed day!

Build quality wasn't Chrysler Corporation's strong suit at the time. I'm guessing they were too eager to build and sell as many as they could. That's why they're so rare and so hard to find now.

Beautiful Exner Forward Look car! I had one, a 1957 Plymouth Belvedere 2-door hardtop, in 1965. It was my parents' senior graduation gift to me that year. Mine had the 318-V8 with Torqueflite, PS/PB, R&H, and was two-tone beige and yellow with a two-tone beige and gold interior like the Fury. I loved it! Wonderful car.

Hello Again, Lou! This time, you covered something you don't see too many of today. A '57 Plymouth, and a Belvedere ragtop at that! It's really wonderful to see a '57 Plymouth today, after so many Tri-Five Chevys. You still see quite a few of those Chevys today. But a Plymouth? Hardly ever! It's a shame so many of them rusted away to the point where their owners had no choice but to junk them. I believe those Mopars of that era were inveterate rust traps. And this example sounded rather tinny. That must been a Chrysler trait back then. I saw a '58 Dodge at a car show a few years ago, and when its owner closed the hood, I could hear that metal rattling, like a garbage can. This is a refreshing change from another '57 Chevy or Ford, I can tell you that! By the way, the top model in the '57 Plymouth lineup was the Fury. Then Belvedere, Savoy, and Plaza. The Belvedere was the only ragtop in the Plymouth line, and 9,866 were made. Chevrolet made 47,562 Bel Air convertibles in '57. The convertible sales champ in the low-priced field? The Ford Fairlane 500 Sunliner, at 77,726! Ford convertible production beat Plymouth _and_ Chevrolet! Anybody who wants a '57 Plymouth, get one, and make sure it's a good one, and not too rusty. Thanks again, Lou, for another exciting video. I'll be looking for more, as I always do!

Nice 1957 Plymouth - the car was designed for (4) head lights so for 1958 they could put the (4) head light system. Dual head lights were only legal in a few states in 1957 but, in 1958 all states. The lower grille below bumper - for 1957 go vertical and the one that is in there is for a 1958. Cleaner looking that way. Thank you for sharing your video - LOU!

Plymouth tricked you and many Americans. Look at the video again. There is a large single headlight on each side with a smaller parking/turn signal next to the headlight. In 1958 all fifty states allowed dual quads, so the Belvedere had the quads, with a small turn signal light between/above the headlights.

Thanks for sharing, learned to drive on a 58 Belvedere. You might know that the back bumper on the featured car is from a 58. In the bottom/middle of the bumper is a hole for the backup light that came on the 58. That, obviously was not on 57s. Same for the lower front grill insert. The 58 insert was much more attractive. Enjoy.

Door handles by Kelvinator? 😊 I really thought I would get to hear those quads sound off. 😢 Grandpa was a Chrysler dealer, he drove a '57-58 Fury-Belvedere, all I remember are the fins and the mirror standing up on the dash. ... and we ran out of gas once.

Hi, Lou! With its fancily finned 1957 models, Plymouth had something that was so fresh, new and advanced that its advertisements blared, "Suddenly it's 1960!" That got some people confused, including the feds, and to clarify while still getting the message across, Plymouth adjusted the slogan to "The 1957 Plymouth, three full years ahead!". About the turn signal lenses juxtaposed with the headlights, most states by '57 were permitting four-headlamp systems, but a few still were not yet, so Plymouth made it look like it had four headlights while still satisfying everyone. Dodge had a similar idea, while DeSoto, Chrysler and Imperial made some cars with two headlamps and some with four. All states were unanimous by the time the '58s rolled in, so everyone got on the trend for that year. There is one thing I find curious about Jay's car, and that is the lower grille like the '58s had, instead of the vertical slots that the '57s usually had. I'm guessing maybe that was part of the restoration job. The Belvedere was the top series, and from 1956-1958 the Fury came as a single two-door hardtop that served as a halo car and performance leader. The Fury became a full series in 1959 that became its new top of the line, as the Impala had also become at Chevrolet that same year. All the five Mopar brands were masterpieces in 1957, and Chrysler was very fortunate to have had Virgil Exner as its chief stylist. Many thanks to you and Jay for taking us all along for some top-down fun!

In Canada, the Plymouth Belvedere, was also called a Dodge Mayfair, just a rebadged Plymouth, with a Dodge grill.

This car screams 50s's! Fro the first moment of this clip I was already smiling. You gotta smile when you see this car. I'm impartial to the 1958, which was slightly updated from this car. It just did not look like anything else from 1957 or 1958. All the GM's looked similar to each other. Loved the color choice here. Beautiful. Were the door handles really from refridgerators? I'm not a pro by any means, but I believe the lower grill on the 1957 Plymouth's was verticial. The horizontal grill was used in 1958. I'm sure there is someone here who can verify that. Love this car's interior. I'm a big fan of the dashboard with the aluminum on it and the 1950's seat patterns. Love it.

I noticed that right away Brian, and mentioned it to Lou. I did NOY like the lower vertical 'slats' on the '57---at all, and apparently the car buying public then didn't either. I'm thinking this guy somehow switched his out for the '58, OR... it may have been a later '57 model produced where they 'fixed' that by using the lower grill of the upcoming '58. Either way, it made a huge difference for the better on what was/is an otherwise outstanding Plymouth design.

@@bobpierce115 Hey Bob, thanks for getting back to me. I didn't like the vertical slats either. They cleaned it up a lot for 1958 and I've always been partial to the '58. My sister had a black 1958 Plymouth Belvedere. I loved that car and I wished she would have kept it until I learned how to drive. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. Thanks for letting me know.

Thanks Brian. The lower grill was really the main thing 'off' on the '57. I know the quad headlights were uniformed on the '58, but the ones on the '57 still looked good. I also didn't like the headlight treatment on the '57 Ford, feeling it was 'bug-eyed' or the rear window divisions on the '57 Oldsmobile and Buick. @@brianmoore6306

It's as much Christine as the movie car was ANY real '57-'58 since it had wrong markings to be either a Fury OR Belvedere and worse the book said the car had four doors !! 👀

They designed the front to accommodate quad headlights, but they weren’t legal yet, so they put the parking lights there.

Lou, this car is spectacular. I wanted to ask you about the lower grill on it. All the '57s I know/have seen. had those vertical 'slats' that were the only styling feature a lot of the car buying public didn't like. I was born in '57, but must agree. To my eye this one was perfected with the '58. Let me know if I'm right. The only other thing I can think of is maybe it was a later '57 where they fixed it per the complaints?

It's a HYBRID!! That's a '58 Plymouth front lower valance panel he's trying to sneak by us, as we all know 57's had wide vertical slats in the lower valance that were immediately recalled because they caught rocks and pebbles and sucked 'em up into the engine so they replaced it with what is more common the vertical PAIRS of slats that cut the air input down. Also he is missing the PLYMOUTH letters that spread across the hood front and cut your fingers if you polish too fast with a thin cloth. They were called "wingettes" the gurney flaps on the bumpers - our '57 wagon had them and most '58s had them standard. 👀

It looks more like a 1958 than 57. The headlights are from 1957, but the grill and lower grill is a 1958. The dash and steering wheel also looks like a 1958. As far as the interior is clearly after market. Non-original of course, but nice.

When I was a kid about 12 years old, my dad bought a 58 Plymouth Belvedere convertible and as long as I was with him he would always let me drive it so that was only the second car I had ever driven before I got my drivers license. I thought I was bad to the bone Specially when we had the top down❤ the main differences between this one, and my dad’s was where of the red backlight was that was an aluminum piece on my dad’s and on the front end instead of the turn signal inbound it had to duel headlights

To respectfully correct the owner, Fury was an upgraded trim package for the Belvedere in 1957. It became its own model in 1959, and was above the mid-range Belvedere. 1954-1959 it was Plaza, Savoy, and Belvedere (Fury included in the latter from ‘56-‘58). 1959-1964 it was Savoy, Belvedere, and Fury. When the Fury became its own model, the Plaza name was dropped.
