1957 Street Scenes - Milwaukee - Original Color Footage

Here's some interesting color footage from 1957. Mostly focused on streetcars travelling around Milwaukee we've left in just the bits with cars in ;-) And boy there are plenty of them! Silent but well worth a view. www.carsandstripes.com

I'm not from Milwaukee, but 1957 was a good year if you were a baseball fan living there, the Braves won the World Series!

Last shots of the Allis Chalmers office building on 70th street in West Allis. My dad was probably at his desk on the fourth floor when those shot were taken.

my aunt was one of the first women, during when black women was allowed to work in factory jobs, and even in those days you made real real good money!!!! we need those big time factory jobs back

Dunno if Donald Trump is going to get some of those jobs back or not. Labor in the United States is expensive. Great if he does, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Rapid Transit service ended on Saturday June 30, 1951 in late evening. Streetcars were phased out early Sunday March 2, 1958. North Shore Line ended their service forever on Monday January 21, 1963 and a very cold below zero weather. Trackless Trolleys ran til early morning Sunday June 20, 1965. All this happen before I was born in early 1976.

Never did see the rapid transit run much less ride on it. But I did see them take up the tracks at the Moorland Road crossing where we moved to in April of 1952. Trackless trolleys? Yep rode on those. Street Cars? Yep those too. North Shore? Yep had a nice ride from Chicago early '60s. Milwaukee's mayor is having trolley cars re-introduced to down town Milwaukee. I won't be riding on them, boondoggles should not be celebrated.

Rapid transit line went the same path as I-94 currently goes on from downtown to the west, part of the old track bed is still there near the Hawley Rd exit.

Milwaukee was one of the best and safest cities in the USA at this time. Now it's a city of strip malls and low paying jobs and very high crime. Very sad.

I moved out of Milwaukee in 1976, the city was just starting to go down hill then. I now live in a small town about 100 miles north of Milwaukee and I have never looked back.
