Once it’s up and running you’ll need try different spacers and no spacers and do many plug checks on all 8 cylinders ,on tunnel rams uneven fuel distribution is one of your greatest challenges and sometimes spacers or tapered spacers make a tremendous difference

You Nailed It Man! These things are VERY picky on what they want, and it all comes down to what you did under it. When it's all said and done, I'll either go through all the ones I already have, or I'll have a lot more hanging on my wall that didn't work... lololol. Hot Rodding, it's what makes this stuff fun right?

Thanks for the spacer ideas. If you are after low end torque it might be a good idea to put a 4 hole spacer between the plenum and bottom manifold to lengthen runners for low speed torque!

You bet Bruce and man oh man, that Cleveland build you were talking about sounds wild as all get out! Methanol on a Tunnel Ram. Thats turning the expert level up to eleven and breaking the knob off.... lololol. As for the 4 hole ones, spot on man, that's the best place for them. That with a set of long tube headers and I'd almost bet you could get Deisel Numbers out of the hole. Luckily we have acquired a plethora of spacers over the years so I'll be able to test a lot of these combinations to find one that works..... I hope.... lolololol.

I have 2" spacers on mine for two reasons. 1. to clear all the linkages and fuel lines needed to run the carbs. 2. they make it look cool.... If it makes more power with or without, I don't really care as long as it runs decent. Mine runs pretty well, and I am headed to town to put plates on the 68 LeMans here in a bit. That way when I get the lights on it, I can start testing it on the highway at the end of my driveway. Not full throttle hero passes, but drivability and tuning. I have almost two weeks to get it running right, and make some cool content.

Sweet Man! it sounds like you and me are on the same page with this stuff lololololol. Honestly I don't care if it's only a 12-13 second car in the quart. If it drives to town to get an ice-cream cone at the local cruise night, it will be a whole lot more fun than doing it in a Ford Edge with a touch screen radio.... lolololol. A buddy of mine said, "I'll bet you I can beat this thing with my Honda", I said I'll bet you will..... but I'll have more fun losing than you will winning. I think I set the hook on that nibbler pretty good, now I gotta hurry and get this thing running so I can real him in..... lololol.

@@BareRoseGarage a 460 with a decent cam, even using the smogger heads from the 70s and 80s, should be VERY capable of putting that thing in the low 12s. I know my mild 455s pushed 4100lb GTOs into the 12s with a 2.93 gear. The 68 I am bringing is quite a bit lighter than 4000lbs, its not a mild 455 in it either. It should be a really fun car to drive, just got plates and insurance on it yesterday, so now I can go test it. New cars are appliances, and like Tony says, in ten to fifteen years they will be junk because of all the crap in them that no longer works. I have some early 2000s GM trucks in that condition right now, won't run or has problems because the modules are all jacked up in them.

On my small block Chevy, I have single 750 HP carburetor on my tunnel ram then runs fine no complications like what you’re doing!

Hey there Eribertoacedo good to see ya man. Actually, that is a better set up. I'm guessing that is around an 850(ish) cfm carb & that equals out to almost the same as these two 650's I'm running (because I lose a lot of cfm with multiple carbs). With it being mounted in the center of the plenum it equalizes out to all the runners much better than this one as well. It just doesn't have the "Old School Multi-Carb" look is all. In a drag race, you'd probably put me on the trailer with that set up brother.

Nice explanation. If you can get some really tall spacers you can get the carbs inline with the roof.

sounds interesting.... could be lots of fun with four hole or divided spacers. You might actually get some torque out of a small engine like an sbc or sbm.

@@NathansMoparGarage my 68 stopped the show I took it to a couple weeks ago. Had people gawking at the tunnel ram and carbs, asking what kind of engine it is. They definitely draw attention when stuff is sticking out of the hood.

I'd ditch the spacers.... you don't want a huge plenum area on a tunnel ram if you're going to run it on the street. the small cross section of the plenum will strengthen the metering signal to the carburetors give you better throttle response.... those old "box type manifolds" are going to be lazy a/f off idle and require a huge accelerator pump shot to fill that big ass plenum or your going to have a massive off idle bog... sometimes less is more.... there's many factors to consider setting up a T/R for a street motor and making work . I been running one on the street for 20+ years and it works as well as any single 4bb set up I've had..... but it requires a lot of sorting out.

Thanks a mill for the advice Steve! very much appreciated! Yeah, the only reason those are on there for now, is because it's what came with it when I got it.... lololol. I've REALLY been thinking about EXACTLY what you are saying as well! It really needs that hard full push off idle, and I've got a couple combinations of carbs I'm thinking of trying with this for that.

I'm thinking of fabricating 4inch spacers for my big block Chevy. It runs great now but I'd like to see the carbs sticking out of the hood. So I'm just going for looks. We'll see how they affect the engine 😏
@bigblockkings1031
@bigblockkings1031 11 ай бұрын
I've read that they will cause my engine to lose some bottom end torque but for what I use my car for I'm not worried about it. I'm running a thumper cam. The smallest one. Stock compression and stock valve train. Never loads up and idles nicely all day. I'm not trying to get all the available horsepower as it's not a racecar.

Thanks for stopping in Bigblockkings, great seeing ya man! If you wanted to put a toe in the water before making the plunge, I'd pick up two of these cheap 2" things and stacking them up to see what it does. But I'd definitely sand-mill or file them flat & true. These things come out of the box pretty wonky. Actually, I do that with all the spacers I get, and from experience the Holley ones have been the worst for some reason. As for losing some on the bottom end..... again that's a broad thing. Some actually pick up on the bottom & lose it on the top. It all depends on the combo under it & how it reacts with what you are doing.

@BareRoseGarage I ended up fabbing two spacers 5 inches tall under the carbs. I milled everything flat and installed them. Now the carbs stick up past the hood line and I have Now problems with starting or running. Actually seems like they made no difference. I've checked the plugs and they are looking good 👍
