Chris Buck - "at least, while sat down, the Flying V is a bit of a nightmare to play to say the least". Then, whilst seated, demonstrates that 'nightmares' can be sublime.

YES kids that is what a "jam" is! wow! It is so cool and funny how both Gibson and Fender were keeping an eye on what the other guy was doing, for example, at one point Fender experimented with different woods on strats and one of those woods was Korina! They are rare but there are Korina strats out there. Thanks Chris! oh and great guitar eh?

Excellent playing as usual, Chris. That guitar sounds fantastic! I love the way the Flying Vs "chime" in ways the Les Pauls . . well . . don't chime. As a massive Wishbone Ash fan in general, and an Andy Powell fan in particular, it was great to hear this example also chime so musically. How and why anyone would intentionally sand a significant amount of wood off the back of the neck is just beyond me. I mean: If you don't like a guitar with a fat neck, then just buy another guitar that wasn't made by Gibson in 1958!! I am a huge Epiphone enthusiast, and I play and collect the Riviera and Sheraton models, among others. One that was particularly appealing to me was the surf green Riviera with the full-size humbuckers. I was being out-bid by those with the "Bid-napper" program every time one of these super rare coloured models came up for sale on Ebay, so I bit the bullet and paid for my own subscription to Bid-napper, but although it did enable me to buy a couple of white Sheratons, no surf green Rivieras came up for sale at all . . leaving me to think that they'd all been accounted for. By that I mean: It was 2016 by this time and the surf green models were all made in 1996-97. Guitars like this eventually find their way into the hands of people who truly appreciate them. Late in December 2016 a surf green Riviera appeared on Ebay. It was in mint condition . . apart from the scratch plate which had been modified by the owner to take a small master volume knob so that he could do volume swells!! In addition he'd chiselled away enough of the body timber to accommodate the pot. Thankfully none of the missing wood was visible with the scratchplate in place. Some people just don't deserve to have nice things!! If you're gonna do volume swells, then buy a bloody Strat! They even come in surf green, for God's sake!! So, a guitar that I normally would have had nothing to do with because of that issue became mine simply because it was so exceedingly rare. We re-wired it and replaced the white scratchplate with another that didn't have cancer. Mine was made in 1996. I eventually got another one from 1997, but its neck was too thin for me. So I sold it to a guy in Sydney. He dropped it on its head and damaged it in the process. The only other one I've seen in the seven years since I got my first one was only suitable for parts, the headstock having been completely broken off. So, all things considered, I did the right thing buying mine. It plays fantastic, and sounds fantastic too, something that the video here doesn't fully capture because of the amp not being right for it. The Marshall VS65R model amps are only really suitable for grunge. Here it is: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iNeTf5CIq92oYmQ.html

That later demo on the bridge pickup sounded incredible. It's not a tone I would typically chase, super clean and dry(maybe a little reverb or room ambience). The notes were just so pristine, certainly not the kind of sound you can hide your mistakes behind. Idk, I always enjoy your playing immensely but that was something special.

So back in the late 80s and early 90s I worked on the outskirts of London. I used a gym near where I worked and talking to the owner we discovered a shared love of guitars. He had some old ones that were the start of a collection and included a beautiful 1937 Gibson acoustic that he let me play. One guitar he mentioned but I never saw was a Flying V that he admitted cost him "a few thousand". The way he described its history it was one of the first shipped to the UK but I just read the auction derails which says the one in this video came here in 1990. But that was about the time that this guy bought his. And he told me that it was not the most expensive because it had been refinished having at some point in its life been painted green. And in the GH details there is mention of green paint residue. I wonder.....
