Lou; this Olds is a real gem! Wow what a classic blending of art and design, they sure don't make them like this anymore. This is what symbolized America and Detroit, when the USA and Detroit were king and aids meant assistance. The quality of these cars is just stunning, I mean they're built like tanks, the doors, hood and trunk shut like a bank vault! Man if only the USA and Detroit could recapture these times again would'nt that be gr8. Have a Gr8 God blessed day

My mom drove a 1961 Olds Super 88. It's amazing to look back and see just how much a car's looks could change in 3 years. The '61 looked nothing at all like the '58.

"how much a car's looks could change in 3 years. The '61 looked nothing at all like the '58" LOL even in just one year -- the 1959 looked nothing at all like the '58. What's more amazing about the '61 is how much worse it looked in just one year. Gone were the 1960's beautiful pointed-tip taillights, replaced by a no-upper lip, toothless - evoking front grille, creepy backwards twisted front pillars, and bland round taillights.

Thank You Lou for showing this car. My All Time Favorite is the ‘58 Bonneville but my older brother owned a ‘58 Olds 88. The one thing I didn’t hear you mention about this car was “Air Ride” My brother’s Olds had it and it was sooooooo smooth to ride in. Just like a big boat on calm water. This car would FLY. The speed was unbelievable. Thanks again Lou…

The logo Lou kept referring to was Oldsmobiles emblem for many years. Almost back to when GM acquired the brand. GM went on a crash restyling program in 57 when they saw Chrysler's new Forward Look 57's. It was quite a task in a short period of time to get all divisions restyled for the 59 models. All GM cars shared the same firewall and windshields and numerous other interchangeable parts to pull it off.

Just a note about the spot light . As people began to expolit the new Highway Projects to buy new homes in the suburbs while the City also narrow streets with a large frontage on homes ......the Spot Light option was already in use by Taxis and Police to read the House address from the distance. Some places had a Local by-law to paint the House Number on the Curb since driveways were abound with few cars parked on the street . It wasn't overly popular as an option but the Police cars and taxis helped to produce it at a volume to make it affordable on a factory Ordered car.

I bought the 1958 Oldsmobile Olds Super 88 Converable in Oklahoma City when my Son was born, 1971, for $80.00. The Colour was Orangish because Oklahoma Dust. I drove to Arkansas, Racine Wisconsin where I traded for a 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 with the 357 interceptor Engine, my wife loved it and I learned her to drive on it.

In HS my family had the 1958 Oldsmobile Fiesta station wagon, a traveling land yacht for sure. I drove it a lot after getting my license and it was a lovely solid cruiser, with power brakes even. You got a green “cold” light when you started it up and had to warm it up. My Dad had me go out and start it in the morning before he or my Mom used it. Tons of chrome for sure. Great video. BTW, those crest designs on the trunk are actually back up lights. Edit: I think J2 meant that it had the two carburetors on this beauty.

It was a great time to be a boy in the mid to late 50s. I always hated to see the end of summer time, but after school started up once again, I knew that the ads for the new cars would be hitting the newspapers and magazine soon after the beginning of school. That was the one redeeming thing about that time of year. :o) They looked so exciting and dramatic in their respective premiers in print media.

Well, what can I say? What. Can. I. Say? Wow, I guess? I have always been a fan of your channel since I first found it. I have known about these cars since I got into classics (About two years, I'm 15 now so being 12 or 13 I didn't have much interests) I've always seen these cars is the background of pictures of cars and videos, but I never took the time to look more in depth. I was just browsing your channel, when I thought "I'll give this car a look, I mean its gonna be nice, its from the 50s." Boy do I regret waiting 2 years. Now this car is battling for my top spot car for 58 along with a Plymouth, Buick and Cadillac (Sixty Special) Reading other comments, I've seen people putting down the chrome due to the amount used, but I think the car has the perfect amount of chrome, no more, no less. I mean even if the chrome had a chip in it, heck, even the paintwork had a chip in it, the car wouldn't be given justice, these cars are perfect. The chrome is just muy perfecto. This is a car I wouldn't mind being stuck in an hour long traffic jam in, I mean you would just be finding more details as you sit there! 2 downsides to this car for me. 1) It isn't parked outside my house. 2) The continental kit, but that's down to taste and opinion. Edit: Whats that handle by the drivers door? It kinda looks like a bathroom light switch. Second Edit: The male mannequin in the back of the Packard Caribbean looks like a Beatle (Paul McCartney I think)

Cars like that were a love affair, by comparison all you see coming off the line today are trade ins, no love just hunks of metal and plastic, if you can call that metal more like tin, you use till it's time to trade it in. It has a white soft-top and 16 inches steel-spoke wheels with www tyres. An AC generator and a good car stereo. It must be like brand new and cost me usd 125000 cirka. Only a dream... Thanks for the +. This is just one of those classics that truly overwhelms one at first sight. It seems that Mr. Harley Earl had more than a little influence in its design. I think that all of the chrome trim with the exception of the bumpers was of the highly polished stainless steel variety. This is my favorite of all of the mid to late '50s Oldsmobile designs. And that work of art instrument panel is just something that transcends the ordinary.

It’s amazing that all of our new technology today does not automatically get us a spotlight as standard equipment. Ironic because we get and take so much for granted today as standard such as power windows, power locks, air conditioning, and speed control which were certainly available in ‘58 but not ubiquitous. Despite all the extras we now take for granted we don’t necessarily get spotlights as standard equipment today. We have to pay extra for spotlights now but not for inside trunk releases and rear window defrosters. So odd.

We all, the Western world, have to suffer under the Asien disloyal concurrence! I ,however, get a knot in my stomach because, except for rare occasions the story I would like told goes missing as you obsess on some obscure tag or tire jack instruction while failing to ask obvious questions about the motor, history of the car, when and how the owner obtained the car, what condition the car was in when they got it, how extensive was the restoration. Why, in the case of this Olds 88 was it lacking power windows, and what options were available on a car that was missing on the featured car. I continue to watch your videos because the cars you feature are ones I'm interested in but I so often find myself dissapointed at the end having so many things about the car left unanswered.
