My name is Norman Huff, Class 59F. This video was beautiful for it brought back old memories in 1959. Was 2nd or 3rd in my basic jet training at Big Springs Texas. I chose the F-100 slot to fly the Super Sabre at Luke AFB. Because of the mission, I suppose you guys were on nuclear alert in Turkey, our class at Luke was strictly to learn to shoot the guns, fire rockets, and fly simulated nuclear attacks on the deck as well as high altitude. To refresh you're memory you had to learn to do the LAD, High Dive, and Over the Shoulder. I cannot remember if we learned to air refuel at Luke or at Nellis AFB, Nevada. I finished 3rd or 4th in my class at Luke and took a chance that I could snag the only F-104C slot at George AFB, Victorville, CA- before I signed in at Nellis. My CO was Major "Hoot" Gibson, a Korean Ace. We did more nuclear runs and Triple Threats on simulated nuke targets in the many Nevada Restrictive Areas. The F-`100 gun sight was really great. I qualified on the dart on mission #2. The 20 mm cannons would shake and you could see the paint come off the 20's and they arched into the silver dart. The air refueling were the most challenging both day and night. Note the straight refueling probe-not like the one that some USAF Colonel fell off the drogue and bent the AR Probe. After that they USAF bent all the AR probes. Make it easy for Wing Weenies to qualify. I enjoyed the presentation showing the flight of four refueling behind the KB 50 Js. The author stated six months. George AFB rotated every three months. When I became checked out in the F-104C/D it had a fixed refueling probe. When we engaged the drogue it would sometimes whip like you could see in the F-100 video. In my first TDY to Spain, the flight of 18 A/C had to do it in two sometimes three days. From GAFB to Bermuda, for an overnight stay. Take off for the Azores for another night, and then on the Moron AB near Seville, Spain. We had to rely on Ocean Station Echo VOR. I had good eye sight for I could see the KBs 30 miles out. Our mission changed. No longer Nuke but to Air Defense for Spain- B-47s standing alert at Moron, and Torrejon AB Spain near Madrid. I flew with the 435th, 436th, 434th, and 476th TFS. Was TDY all the time. Stood alert for the Berlin, Cuban Crisis an eventually to Vietnam. While with the 476th the Wing Commander by the name of Col Darrell Cramer and I led the first non-stop flight of 10 A/C for the first gaggle, and 30 minutes later the following 8 A/C from GAFB to Seville Spain in 10 hrs. Took six refueling and we flew a great circle route that flew close to Canada and Newfoundland. It was harry for Cramer was not that good at air refueling. Sometimes the AR probe hose would shake and pull the complete AR probe off the A/C. The rivets would go down the port intake and cause a compressor stall and out you go. The "In Trail" was great. Bought back memories. I usually was in number 4 position. Lots of G's. Final was 180 Kts indicated. Squeak em on without scraping the tail post. The CO at the time was an Exchange Navy Pilot by the name of Brotherton. My favorite flight instructor was Capt Louie Braun, spelling? Anyway if you know anybody that reads this and was in class 59F, you can e-mail me at normannhuff@gmail.com. or sign up with the Veteran Group. Regards to all that flew the F-100. God Bless and God Save America. Norm Huff

Shock, I probably flew with you while you were with the Ferry Command. I went on three or four crossings while at George AFB from 1954 to 1959.Mostly the Goose Bay, Keflavik, Europe route. We delivered the first F-100's to Bitburg. Sitting and waiting for the WX to clear while at godforsaken Goose Bay so we could get into Keflavik, Iceland. No Air Refueling in those days! Then frustrated, watching the Canadians, who were ferrying MK-6's (F-86's), take-off in any WX to fly the same route. Of course they could go into BLU-1 if the WX went bad at Keflavik. And us, having to memorize the route through the fjords to get into BLU-1 in case of a dire emergency. Glad I never had to try that!! On one trip , two of us from George AFB got stuck in Goose Bay for a couple of weeks with our fuel tank laden F-100's and had to wait for the next Ferry Command group to come through. We were allowed to take our birds up on a local flight when the WX was good, just to keep them operational. On one of those days I got into a hassle with one of the Canadian MK-6's who was airborne at that time. No contest!!!! He easily waxed my a_ _. After landing, I went over to the Canadian area to talk to the pilot and much to my embarrassment, found out he was a enlisted Sargent. Yes, they had enlisted men as pilots. The last one I went on with you guys (Ferry Cmd) was the most interesting. Dover, Deleware to Ernest Harmon AB, Newfoundland. Then to Lajas, Azores with NO air refueling. So, that meant we had to carry as many fuel tanks as possible to make it to the Azores and we HAD TO HAVE negative winds (no head winds) or we couldn't go., There were other conflicts that occurred before this trip, but space prevents me from mentioning them. After a couple weeks of waiting, we finally went. After your Ferry Command disbanded, I led a couple of "Flying Fish's" (Pacific Crossings) in the F-100's. Califonia, Hickam AFB, Guam, then into Far East Bases.

This brought back memories for me. This was a deployment by the 428th TFS in 1958. I deployed from Cannon to Incirlik four years later, in Feb 1962 and we and spent four months TDY there. I was in the 522nd TFS at the time. All of it looked familiar and the shots toward the end showed the exact barracks we lived in while I was there. Norm Turner

Brilliant. Captures the mood of squadron rotations in the late 50s, early 60s Cold War period. Straight refueling probes, KB-50s. Shortly after this, our our attention turned to Vietnam.

Crawford Shockley Crawford, an Air Force buddy of mine sent me the video. He had made a similar F-100 deployment to Turkey in 1962 and was commenting on the difficulty of refueling with the straight, impossibly positioned probe. In the video, I saw what he meant - I suppose you just had to fly formation relative to a specific point on the tanker and drive in. No way you could see the probe and the basket in the same field of vision. The probe also seemed thin and flimsy to me. In the video I thought it was going to snap off. Was that a B-29 tanker? If so, I'm wondering what the refueling altitudes and speeds were. I flew Marine F-4s and our main tanker was the KC-130. We were always refueling at about 18,000 and 200 knots which is very slow for an F-4 with 3 external tanks. Sometimes we were at half flaps with one engine in min burner and the C-130 had to "toboggan" to give us 210-220. I made a Turkey deployment for a NATO exercise in 1974. We did it from Beaufort, SC to Lajes, then to Sigonella, Sicily and then to Cigili, Turkey. We were the first Marine squadron to do it without pathfinders using only headings, occasional TACAN/ADF fixes and a balky great circle nav computer that was based on a Doppler radar that didn't work half the time. By today's standards the whole thing was pretty "hairy" but I was too young and dumb to care. Thanks again for posting the video. As you said, great memories.

Karl Schroeder Thanks for the additional comments, Karl. I cut my teeth on ocean crossing when I was assigned to the "Ferry" command after my first assignment to Korea in 1955 flying F-86 Sabres. We delivered fighters world-wide primarily to NATO via the the famous WW II "High Flight" route. (Talk about hairy) I got 10 crossings before we were disbanded (some took as long as 2 months) 25 total ..... but I digress. The straight boom was a bit tricky but once you learned to focus on a point on the KB-50 pod, as you surmised, it became routine. Later they modified the booms by bending them up at a 45 degree angle and then level to make it easier for the "kids". I went on to fly F-4C,D,&E's in later life with 3 tours in SEA. Now retired in Air Force Village aka Blue Skies West in San Antonio. ..... Life is good ...... Cheerio ......."Shock"

I really enjoyed this! Very well filmed & edited nice score too, can I ask what kind if camera was used? I wish my Dad could have seen this he was with the 3rd Photo Flt in Wiesbaden ’53-’56 before working at Lookout Mountain AFL he loved filming Aerials, after he was recalled he went to Korea filming “Fox Peter One” he also filmed the first F-100s coming into Europe, if I remember right one had cracked canopy form hitting the drogue, thank you again Crawford for posting this!

13thaaf Thanks for your comments. The camera was one I had purchased while I was stationed in Korea flying F-86 Sabres in 1954 - 55. It was a Kodak that took a 50 ft magazine and had to be rewound after about 30 seconds of filming (kept me pretty busy). I was in the first flight of F-100s ferried to Europe. We weren't equipped for inflight refueling and had to fly the old "High Flight" route. It was a long trip and we delivered them to a base in North Africa (Morocco I think) where the European based aircrews checked out in them. All of my movies and photos languished for years until I got an Apple that had the iMovie app. Took 2 years putting it all together ...... great fun. ....... Many Thanks ........ "Shock"

Great photos, many thanks!! Brings back a flood of old memories. I was a jr Lt in the F-100 squadron (1957-1958) that pioneered, at the squadron level, many of the skills that became commonplace later. It was the 1st TFS and I see the "Wicked Lady" emblem on the side of several planes. Our CO was Chuck Yeager, who was picked for this post because of his skill and credibility. I clearly recall hours of practicing not only refueling but special weapons delivery, air-to-air missile (Sidewinders) delivery, and others. Then we went from George AFB (So. Calif) to Moron de la Frontera, Spain and were Franco's air defense against the Soviets. I see another commenter here who may have been in that squadron. Eddie Gallardo, if you were, send me a note(waltmaas1@gmail.com) and we'll renew old friendships.
