In this video I give a full in depth tour of the 1960 Chevrolet Impala SS. I take viewers on a close look through the interior and exterior of this car while showing details, over viewing of features, and noting unique styling cues to the vehicle itself. I also show the engine and the details of it, start it up and see how it sounds under acceleration. A thorough tour/review of this car designed to give others a greater overall appreciation of the vehicle.

This was one of the best cars I ever owned. It was the first car I owned and I purchased it in 1962 for $1600. Mine was a yellow convertible with a 283 and white wall tires. Lots of great memories.

I bought this car and the very first thing i did was change out the wheels. It now rides on Coy C5 gunmetals...18" and 20". The seller didn't bother telling me that the air ride system had tons of leaks, the AC didn't blow cold at all and the differential leaked like a sieve. All of that is fixed now and the car is a true joy to drive.

My Dad owner a Chevrolet dealership when I was a kid and I loved those cars. This 1960 Impala was the beginning of the best decade for Chevrolet producing any type of vehicle a person could want, whether it be a sexy 2 seat sports car with a fiberglass body (Corvette) a "family" muscle car (Camaro) a grandma grocery getter or a first car (Nova or a Corvair) a family car (Impala & station wagon version) a truck for the farmer (Cheyenne) or a grain truck or bus (Apache) Chevrolet had it.

The "X-Body" full-size Chevy from 1958 to 1964 represented a huge step forward in handling over the '55-'56-'57 Chevys and introduced the larger displacement 348/409 engines with dual-quads or 3-deuces to rock our world. I grew up in a Chevrolet dealership where my father was Sales Manager from 1960 to the mid-70's. I worked there in the summers detailing and delivering cars. Thanks for the memories!

My dad had a 60 Chev. His was a Bel Air 2-door sedan, so it wasn't as fancy as this one, but it was the same basic car. It was so low and the rear overhang was so long it would bottom out on steep hills. I remember the enormous trunk. Trunk size was a big deal in the 60s. The glovebox coasters were useless because a normal size cup wouldn't fit under the dash overhang. Gas station attendants hated the hidden gas cap because they'd cut their fingers pulling the license plate down.

@dalewalker4614
@dalewalker4614 6 жыл бұрын
Correct you are sexysagi! .The SuperSport option was released to the public at the same time as the introduction of the famed "409" Engine at the beginning of the 1962 model year. The 409 was available in the Impala, Bel Air and Biscayne models while the Super Sport option was only available in the 1962 Impala 2-dr hardtop & convertible equipped with either a 327 engine or the 409. I believe the 283 became an option for the SS in the 1963 model year. Ford was kicking Chevrolet's butt in the roundy-round races in the summer of 1961, but Chevy's much anticipated 409 engine was not scheduled to be introduced until the 1962 model year.... Most people are unaware that late in the 1961 model year Chevrolet built 200 1961 Impala Super Sport "409" cars and sold them across the dealer's floor to racers to make the killer 409 legal for NASCAR racing that year. That immediately turned the tables on Ford. Chevrolet also built 325 1961 Impala Super Sport cars equipped with high-performance "348" engines. I owned one of those rare models for several years while President of the National Impala Association car club (1958-1964 full-sized Chevys). The 1961 Super Sport was identified by the letters SS etched on the cowl tag as well as SS badging on the two side spears, the trunk emblem and the SS Grab Bar mounted above the glove box. Both the 1961 and 1962 SS featured special wheel covers with unique 3-blade chrome "spinners". Very few of the total production run of 525 1961 Impala Super Sport cars are in circulation today - I certainly wish I had never sold mine....The 1960 "Retro-Rod" Impala featured in this video is a sweet ride but is most certainly NOT a Super Sport as the SS did not yet exist. (Note that the car has NO SS badging, just the IMPALA script across the front of the hood.) Other viewers correctly noted that the radio is an AM model, as FM radio didn't exist yet either. The narrator missed the fact that the Impala had a Rear Speaker in the middle of the back seat. I owned a 1960 Impala with a "348" engine in high school and equipped it with a "Reverb" switch from the JC Whitney catalog for a most awesome sound experience from that AM Radio! Long live radio station KOMA in Oklahoma City - we listened to rock-and-roll tunes by skip every night in Eastern Idaho... LOL

If I understand you correctly Ron you agree that the '61 SS Package was only available on the Impala 2-door Sport Coupe and Convertible, although I've never seen an authentic '61 SS convertible with the SS stamped on the cowl tag. My brother had a '63 SS ragtop with a 283 and my mother had a '62 SS ragtop with a 327 & AC. You could be correct about the 283 being available in the '62 SS package, I no longer have my reference books from when my dad was a Chevrolet dealer from 1960 through 1976 so I have no way to verify. Thanks for your comment, your '62 409 sleeper must have been a gas!

So did I Mike Stone. Chevrolet built 200 1961 Impala Super Sports with 409 engines & sold them across the dealer floor to be NASCAR legal in late summer of 1961. They built an additional 325 1961 Impala Super Sports with high-performance 348 engines that were sold to the public. I ended up with one of those in the late '70's and suspect yours was one of the 325 as well.

By looking at the steering column the transmission range selector shows only "D' and "L". I would bet that hanging off the back of the engines bell housing was really the bullet proof and famous, 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission as opposed to the General Motors Turbo Hydromatic three speed transmission. I could be wrong, maybe I missed something.

Yes you are wrong, there were 3 audible clicks as he shifted through the gears. It was very common in the '70's or so to swap the Turbo Hydramatic in the place of the good old PowerGlide Trans. As there were no THMs in 1960 the "dial" on the steering column is the 2-speed PowerGlide, but the driver ignores the dial and "counts the clicks" if he wishes to shift between 1-2-Drive. Good catch!

These model cars had a fairly simple horn mechanism, but it was hard to keep working and pieces are probably hard to find! What I liked, no matter where you pushed the 'horn ring" it honked, unlike most today! The hard top version had really improved from the older hard tops that didnt seal very well.

Beautiful car and advanced engineering for its time, when some of the present competitors were making three wheeled vehicles, (like Isetta-BMW) or haven't even existed, like all Korean brands, whose factory locations were undisturbed agricultural land at the time. How times have changed! While they developed state of the art production capacity, our existing ones turned into unsightly industrial wasteland. It's difficult not to feel heartache-felt nostalgia, when you look at these beauties.
