This mid-1960s color film about safely driving in mountains is “A Thru The Windshield Film”. A family gathers on the floor around a map. A finger traces the route past ‘Douglas Lodge EL 6100’ and view typed weather conditions (:25-:49). Coleman coolers are loaded into a 1960s Buick Sport Wagon (:50-1:00). “Don’t Let Death Take Your Holiday” sign is shown, as is a newspaper clipping of deaths (1:44-1:55). A two-toned station wagon enters a garage and lifted. A hand checks the radiator, battery, and oil (1:57-2:35). The father loads tools, tire chains, rope, shovel, safety reflectors, trouble light, and jumper cables into the Buick (2:37-3:35). A double-yellow line with white-striped middle is shown from the driver’s point-of-view, followed by a stretch with white broken stripes, and one with no lines (3:37-4:29). The car passes ‘California 190’, ‘Watch for Livestock’, ‘Watch for Deer’, and the ‘Arrowhead Ranger Station San Bernardino National Forest’ signs (4:46-4:56). A foot presses the brake pedal and the 1960s speedometer drops (5:12-5:16). Signs shown are ‘Narrow Road Slide Area’, ‘Watch for Rocks’, ‘Narrow Bridge Ahead’, and ‘Slippery When Wet’ (5:21-5:36). Signs show Smokey the Bear saying ‘Remember Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires’ (6:05), followed by ‘No Smoking Due to Critical Fire Hazard’ (6:12). Smoke and flames burn in a forest fire (6:18-6:38). Trash and a ‘Unlawful to Dispose of Litter or Garbage along Highway $500 fine’ sign are shown (6:45-7:04). Oxford tie shoes use the clutch and gas pedal, followed by the speedometer (7:27-7:34). A cartoon depicts a slow lead driver resulting in an accident (8:22-8:35). A line of cars pass ‘Slower Traffic Use Turnouts’ and ‘Turnout ¼ Mile’ signs (8:37-9:09). The dashboard engine gauge approaches Hot. A hand shifts to a lower gear (9:22-9:30). A 1940s car has a raised hood. A hand tries to take off a steaming radiator cap (9:53-10:06). A family has a picnic while the car cools (10:09). A hand pours water from a plastic container, removes the cap, and fills the radiator (10:18-10:50). A cartoon drawing depicts family members distracting the driver (10:59). A hand pulls out the parking brake, shifts the automatic transmission to park, and manual shift to reverse. A rock blocks a white-walled tire (12:02-12:19). A convertible uses its blinker to pass on a winding road (12:57-13:06). Back-country driving requires one car to back up to let another oncoming car pass before traveling on (13:23-14:21). ‘Elevation 6000 Ft.’ is shown (14:26). A cartoon drawing depicts death riding with a drunk (15:10). A 1960s loafer pumps the brakes. The tire smokes (15:47-16:00). A hand shifts to a lower gear (16:21). Scenes of mountain driving on narrow curvy roads is shown from the driver’s point-of-view (16:40-17:46). A car forces another to drive into a dirt shoulder (18:11-18:17). I was born and grew up in West Virginia. We had to go mountain driving to get there even if "there" was a park ten miles away.

These were all Ford products. The two toned wagon, a '58 Ford. The blue wagon at home, and in the radiator fill scene, a '64. The convertible was a '54 Comet Caliente, a Mercury product. The car blocking traffic was an early 50's Merc.

Didn’t mention seat belts anywhere. The Grim Reaper is in on that too, not just from drinking.

How did they drive without the help of their phones for texting while driving? The kids know how to do this real well now.

teaches using engines to slow vehicles on down angle roads - mandatory knowing, but never taught. Headlight courtesy taught; road etiquette. None of these skills are taught anymore.
