My dad is a huge fan of DKW, at one point he had over 20 of them in our yard, sedans, station wagons, vans, a few trucks, a couple of Mungas and a few older oddities I can't remember the names of. I still remember going on a road trip with him in my 20's and hitting 120mp/h in a 1958 1000s wagon, it took forever and a day and a loooong downhill slope but man was it fun. He had replaced the speedometer with a newer one (went back to the original after it was refurbished) because it went all the way around back to 0 and broke the mechanism on a previous trip (it only went to 90). The sound of those 3 cylinder engines screaming at 80+ miles an hour is not something I will ever forget and the sound of the deceleration even more so. Amazing cars. His dream to this day is still seeing the Auto Union Silver Arrows in action. Sadly age got the better of him and he had to let his collection go (for nowhere near what it was worth). It was a different time though and values then were not what they are today. They used to be nicknamed Duitse Kak Wa (Afrikaans for German Crap Wagon) and were all over Southern Africa. My dad always loved them though and the collection just grew as he got older. He loves anything even a little odd when it comes to cars.

In my distant childhood, I remember a neighboor having one of these cars. As I had already had a strong interest in car technology, I knew it had a two strokes engine, which explained its particuliar sound, and the fumes !

I had two "58 models in the early '60s and have such fond memories of them. Both succumbed to rust eventually - the case of being used in N.Y. winters and heavily salted roads near the city, just couldn't be helped.

I grew up around these, my dad loves them. I still remember his face almost split in two with a grin screaming down a country road at 110mph. He still has a few even today but doesn't drive much anymore. These things haul ass if you tune them right, they feel totally gutless at low RPM but once you get them screaming they pull like a mofo. 110mph was as fast as we ever got my dad's 1958 1000s wagon up to and that was slightly downhill with a tailwind but damn it felt SO much quicker. That "riiiiing ding ding ding ding" sound as you decelerate, impossible to mistake :) Amazing cars.

+kstadden The change of the name from DKW to Auto Union was in 1958, when Mercedes overtook the shares majority from DKW. And Mercedes off course tried to make it a more posh refined Marque. This did not really work, as the group of freaks for 2-stroke cars declined from year to year. The engine output was raised from 900 cc 40hp to 1000cc 44hp (DIN-net) and in 1961 finally to 50hp in the 1000 S Coupe, doing 135 km/h , 85m/h Top Speed. 1963 Production was ceased, a new model F102 was launched in 1964 1200cc 65hp 140 km/h top speed, this model flopped. It had not enough torque to fulfil the high expectations of the customers who wanted to compete the BMW 1600 with 85 hp on the road. Audi was reinvented 1965 with the same coachwork the R103 was launched with 1700cc 72hp 148 km/h top speed , 0-60 m/h in less then 16 seconds , 50 to 75 m/ h in 15 seconds. A car that really pulls away.

That's right, that's the way you said. My first car was a DKW junior de luxe and my father had the DKW 1000 S, later the DKW F102 knows almost nobody anymore, but he was actually the forerunner of the modern Audi. It should even give a DKW F 103, with a four-stroke Otto engine unfortunately, only a few of them were built because you had the Audi 60 Favirisiert. Thus it remained with few built DKW F 103. I think it's a shame because the F 102 was a bit ahead of its time, except for the engine. The F 102 was a hostile spacious Limosiene and according to then standards it was very modern. It had even been considered to equip the two-stroke engine with valves, but that was all too late. The people did not want to drive around with a smoke sign and the engine sound was not very nice, so at least the customers found it, no one wanted to hear a "Rän deng deng". They wanted to hear the sound of the four-stroke or at least the song of a VW beetle. In addition, the two-stroke was dead. What was another reason that the customer had to fill the one four-stroke no oil, yes the refueling of a two-strokes was a little science because of the ratio of gasoline and two-stroke oil, because you had to calculate properly, without a calculator or app with the tablet or Mobile . It was much more convenient to just refuel gas. The ignition coils were not the best. One was always broken, so we always had at least one ignition coil when it went further away. That's how it was back then. I am 67 years old and have my driver's license since I was 16, with 18 for the car and in the Bundeswehr class 2. At the age of 21, I did the bus driver's license, in some cases drove a tanker. I was fortunate enough to be able to drive in a car crazy time driving a lot of different vehicles, but my DKW Junior, with all his quirks ...... but that's pure nostalgia, frankly I'm glad it's so modern Cars are there Deutsch Stimmt ganz genau , das ist so wie du gesagt hast .

Turned out In Brazil from 1958 up to 1967 by DKW Vemag , the dashboard hold a emblem with the slogan " 3= 6 " , implying that the 2-stroke engine yield was equal to a 4-stroke-six-cilinders engine. My family had a brand new model 1965 DKW , already equipped with Lubrimat , a system that automatically mixed the oil with fuel. Lubrimat was very few reliable , it could either drink oil heavily or under lubricate the engine. In some months the car was sold and replaced by a new VW Beetle. In 1966 DKW VEmag was bought out by VW Brasil and closed down thus eliminating the competitor.

Chassis and suspension construction derived from a racing car ... of 1932. Just like the Wartburg and Trabant cousins from the east, these cars firmly stuck on the road. They were not bad at all, but from body design and over-heating 2-stroke engines already over-aged in the 1960s, when Citroen already built the DS.

A Junior with a 750cc engine had a max of 76MPH. Cruise in it for all day running was only 2 MPH less. We owned a 1000 4-door sedan. DKW/Auto Union built the engines and then ran them on a dyno. The ones that produced the most HP went to the racers. The next higher ones went to those who bought the 4-door autos. Then the rest of the engines went for normal sales. We got ours on Cyprus. Mom learned how to drive on it. And tore up the clutch. The dealer was a M-B dealer and charged $25 to replace the clutch. She still has her original license. Which now is over 60 years old. She also has her Turkish license which was where we lived for two years after leaving Cyprus. Dad drove the car for two years after we got back to the US and was taking it to Ohio for us to use up there while dad went to a ship. Unfortunately if seized a bearing about 30 miles from here and was towed back to the house by our Rambler. Intent was to fix it when he got back from being on the ship for a year and a half. The Navy had other ideas and his next orders were to Japan so we sold it to a local Rambler dealer's salesman who also owned one. In less that 2 years we were back and wishing we had not sold the car. I have the drivetrain for a Junior in the garage and wish I could find a body for it.

Maybe that’s a type of tachometer integral with the speedometer that indicates ‘advisability’ of shifting to a higher gear, as in, first sign of red = up shift plausible without over laboring the engine, changing to full red, indicating “red line”, and up shifting would be highly advisable?? While I haven’t ever seen anything like that in a car, it would kind of make sense, and might assuage some new-driver anxiety by giving more objective feedback than the usual “way it sounds “ or “way it feels “ ... for back in the day before an automatic transmission was the rule rather than the exception.

I worked in an auto wreckers back around 1975 and we scrapped a DKW but the powertrain was different. It did not have a geared transmission but a belt drive very similar to a skiddo. The powertrain sat for a month or two and a fellow came in and bought it for $100.00. About a month later he was back with the three cylinder two stroke trike that he had built. Thing was fairly fast but it was definitely homemade and the engineering was a tad suspect. We eventually got it back when he piled it up on a turn by going way too fast due to a complete brake failure..............

Are you sure this car wasn't a DAF from Netherlands? Belt transmission and front wheel drive would hardly have worked.

There was a similar car produced in eastern Germany, the IFA F9. Not that luxurious, but based on the same concept, makes them look like twins. Both producers did their own thing after the split up of Germany.

I can't believe that when we in the U.S..were driving high compression V8's some of them fuel injected that Auto Union/dkw AUDI was producing 3 cylinder rattle traps like this. wow. I guess this is better than what was being produced behind the Iron Curtain (the Trabant) but not much.

@ Glenn Most technical details are shared with the (later) Wartburg. The cars were not bad, not even the eastern ones, but quite over-aged, as all of it was pre-war tech. Auto Union group introduced 2-stroke engines in 1928 when car taxation started based on engine displacement. The »3=6« on the trunk indicated that a 3-cyl. 2-stroke would be equivalent tp a 6-cyl. 4-stroke, which of course didn't fully hit truth. But with 60 HP, it was a lot more juicy as a VW 1200 or other crap of that time.

I just got an Auto Union 1000S DeLuxe that's been sitting in a frontyard for more than 20 years. It has rust holes trough the floor, the engine and the whole transmission is stuck and the previous owner even lost the keys and this car has steering lock. It's the same car in the video, with a few differences like front disc brakes, automatic oil mixer and the spare wheel is replaced by the tank which lays flat on the trunk, with the spare wheel on the right side. Is it risky to get the engine spinning and maybe starting it up without disassemblying the whole engine apart? And what about the transmission? What'd be the first things to do on a 2 stroke that's been sitting outside for two decades? Thanks

I Hate to be the barer of bad news, the roller crank is rusted causing the engine to be stuck. You will need a new crank minimum, and they are expensive . Everything else is fixable, fairy cheap just time and work

@@2stroketurbo Thanks for replying. Yes, I've seen a crankshaft for sale on eBay and costs a thousand bucks. Engine parts in general tend to be very rare and expensive and I'm afraid that mine might need a complete rebuild... I'll send you the link to the pictures in a minute, thanks again for replying!

UPDATE: I've pulled out the engine and took down the head to find out that it wasn't turning due to all three pistons being completely stuck. It took 15 tons under a hydraulic press to get them out with the crackshaft. The bearings aren't rusty at all and spin pretty good. They didn't oxidate due to the oil still left inside fortunately
