Pretty sure the ball joints drop through the hole so the plate is on top. At least that's the way all the ones I've ever done have been. Great episode!
@chadbrown1474
@chadbrown1474 Жыл бұрын
@George right now the entire upper control arm is relying on the integrity of 3 5/16 bolts. If the plate was on top, there would be no way the spindle and control arm could seperate unless the ball joint broke. They aren't installed correctly

Hey Puddin’, looks good! I believe the upper ball joints drop thru the control arm not bolted to the bottom, at least that’s how I was shown, just in case the bolts would break the ball joint would still be held by the control arm.

@markgriffin4888
@markgriffin4888 Жыл бұрын
You are both correct. At present, if those bolts break, the spring tension will force the control arm to be separated from the ball joint which will then have the spindle without any upper support. NO MORE PUDDIN That's why with the ball joint on the outside, if the bolt breaks, the spring tension would force the upper arm against the upper ball joint, and you probably would be none the wiser that anything had happened. LET'S HOPE HE READS THESE COMMENTS
@markgriffin4888
@markgriffin4888 Жыл бұрын
There is always an exception to the rule, walking past my 94 2wd hilux chassis i noticed that the top ball joint is UNDER the upper control arm. Just wondering if it's got anything to do with it being a torsion bar suspension??? Checked the manufacturers manual, and the drawing shows that it is correct.

Definitely pack bearings by hand that way and never a problem, but wow those cotter pin holes! I would get some more fat bearing washers to bring the castle nut up so the pin is in shear. The way it is, it can twist out real easy and scares me, but I have been known to over think things... 🤔.

@@jameschoreboy2540 a Karen? How is being concerned about the safety of a person and his investment make someone a Karen? I used to build Colter springs for Clark. The castle nut is important to get right. If it's loose it works itself off, the bearings get ruined. If it's tight it binds up and melts the grease and the bearings get ruined. Something isn't right with the spindle or the nut and it's not going work long term.

Both of them need a fire extinguisher in the garage. In one of Sleeperdude's videos, he was working on the diff of a vehicle and had the fuel tank on the floor. It still had some gas in it and his kids were sitting on it. Somehow, he managed to set the diff on fire. He threw water on it and that made it worse. He spent over a minute trying find something to put the fire out. After that was over, he was lowering the vehicle from the jack and came close to pinning a puppy under the wheel. Good thing the puppy sidestepped. Sleeperdude worked in a professional shop and should know better than not have a fire extinguisher handy.
