1961 Zweirad Union Express Type 113 vs. 1957 DKW Hummel Type 101 Vintage Mopeds

Recently received a lovely 1961 DKW Hummel Zweirad Union Express Type 113 2-stroke moped to go with my 1957 Hummel. I pulled them out of winter storage and so decided to make a quick video comparing the two and ask for any information you might have on the mechanical differences between these two bikes.

Hi! I am Franz from Germany. Oh yes, those two Motors are so different! There is almost nothing exchangeable between them. While the 101 is one of the "early" Mopeds that had typically about 1,2 to 1,4 HP (NSU Quickly and all those with a Sachs two-speed) this was enough for reaching 40Km/h as a single-seater. The 101 was the first or at least one of the first with three speeds. A few years later, things became different! Two-seaters were allowed! More power was needed. So the engine was completely reconstructed when "Zweirad-Union" was founded. The new motor has 2HP and was one of the strongest of its time when it came out. The 101 has that odd bolt pattern for the cylinder-bolts, the clutch cable is visible on the left side where it goes into the motor, and on the right side there is no extra cover in the middle of the motor for adjusting the clutch. The 101 has a 9mm carburator, while the 113 has one with 12mm. You can put the 12mm on the 101. It will run much better! Some "export" models had it from stock. Your Express is one of the rare "standard" models, as the 113 was usually ordered with the two-seater bench. All the Zweirad-Union types were sold as Dkw, Victoria, or Express. The main difference was simply the colour. Things changed very fast at that time, and the Zweirad-Union 159 was the last one with DKW-styled engine. When Hercules became owner of Zweirad-Union, they replaced it with a Sachs-engine. The 159TS was then the base for all the famous Hercules bikes from the late 60s until the 80s. Have fun with your mopeds! As long as you use them as intended by construction, they are very reliable.

Hey, I'm Marco from germany. I'm 18 years old. I restore my first dkw hummel with 14 years with my grandpa. Now I restored 3 dkw hummel and other Oldtimer. Now I want to restore a dkw car. Your bike is really good restored. And now a German senternce : Wer hummel fährt, fährt nie verkehrt😊👍🏻

Greetings from Nürnberg, the birth place from Express, I am riding a DKW Super Hummel type 114 with a 4,2 PS Engine, built in 1961 I am happy to see, that this Mopets have friends in America, great.

The DKW Hummel 101 was manufactured by the Auto Union (now Audi). Auto Union was bought by Daimler Mercedes Benz at the end of 1958. They decided in 1958 to exclude the manufacturing of motobikes so a new company was founded (named Zweirad Union with the DKW, Express trademarks) with a other production place in Nürnberg.

Hello, greetings from Germany. i also have a Hummel 113, the engine has a lot more power than the 101 engine (2 HP instead of 1.3). Please have a look at the german Website "zweirad-union-mopeds.de". This site is in german or english. There you can find almost every information about Zweirad-Union Mopeds (colors, ID-Numbers, sparparts etc..)

This is a really cool passion you have with these mopeds. I had a number of 80cc bikes of all sorts of configurations that I could get up to 40 mph, but they would constantly break down on me. I eventually went all electric in 2013 and haven't looked back since. Although, I do miss the sound and feel of the gas motors. Take care and thanks for this👍

Nice bikes! Your 101 is probably a 0,8 Hp and the 113 a 2 Hp motor. DKW, dampf kraft wagen (steam powered car) was originaly a stream engine manufacture founded by the Dane: Joergen Skafte Rasmussen, in germany. Dkw became the initials for, des knabens wunsch (the kids wish) and, das kleine wunder (the small wonder) when the Company developed a small 2 stroke engine and mounted it to a bike frame. Victoria, Express and DKW was merged into Zweirad Union in 1958

Hello Randy, We emailed maybe 5 years back as I was working on a 1957 nearly identical to yours, down the color and level of patina. It's been a couple new computers since then, consequently have lost your email address. So unfortunately, a public message for now. I brought my Hummel with on a move to NZ and have gotten it running and on the road with the help of some great moped people here. My next phase is to convert it to electric with a hub motor. I will not harm the frame and I will keep all the parts for the future if it ever gets returned to it's factory state. Since the conversion is meant to be 'invisible', I plan to buy a junk motor and hollow it out as a battery box. For that reason, I'm wondering if you or anyone who happens upon this post, knows what other motors will mount up to the same points as a 101. For example the 113 or the 805. The more motors that I know fit, the easier to find a donor on ebay, etc. A couple thoughts regarding your post: - Mine is also in MPH- I believe they would have used a MPH speedo for models intended for US export. Mine also has an electric horn, which I remember seeing as a US export variant on an old wiring diagram.

Hi! This sounds so awesome, but I have absolutely no clue what other motors might mount. I can look at my 113 and guess if it would fit the 101 but I definitely wouldn’t be able to tell you for sure.

If I were you I might just try and find a battery I could mount to the book rack on the back with a basket to make it “invisible” as finding another motor to hollow out sounds like a huge chore with limited upside in that your range will be really small in that amount of space.
