That Jewel radio is featured prominently in the final beach scene in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) There is a lengthy still shot of just the radio when Jane (Betty Davis) runs to a refreshment stand to get an ice cream cone. While she's waiting for the cone she is recognized by beach goers as announcements of Jane kidnapping her sister Blanche are broadcast over the radio. The crowd and police approach her and Jane begins to dance, basking in the attention she craved.

Hi Shango, I'm glad you like the radios. I got the Panasonic at a SCARS meet for next to nothing. I purchased it with those batteries in it, someone else recapped it. I got the factory alignment instructions and tried to align it. It went o.k until the insulating material on the trimmers disintegrated. I also got the Jewell Radio at the Topanga flea market, but forgot where I got the realistic. Got rid of this stuff because I need to thin my hoard at my ripe old age of 18. Glad it's gone to a great home. I look forward to more of your great videos.

Love those old Motorola Transistor AM radios from the late 50's and early 60's, all of them are great performers with sensitivity and sound, esp the models with the RF stage and some with 3 IF stages like the X29 model from 1962. Motorola did some very good engineering back then.

Yeah it is a shame that they are killing off the AM stations, it's the same here in the UK. Wow I love these old 60's American transistor sets, Motorola made some fantastic radios and TVs. Interesting testing these old girls out in the desert also I love the dance party. You can't wrong with Roxy Music always a crowd pleaser 🤪🤪 The original Locomotion by Little Eva is by far my favourite over the Kylie version. Really interesting to listen to these AM stations. Great video you really cheered up my weekend.

Heck, the way things are going in Chicago, the best and fastest warning system you may get for the ongoing "civil unrest" is to listen to a local AM news station, so, having one handy may save your life and or prevent your car from getting danced on like a Studio 54 dancefloor in the 70's

I've driven in Chicago and you can keep it. People drive like idiots on the highway at 80 to 90 miles an hour zigzagging in and out of traffic. If you drive downtown the pedestrians don't even look they just step out in front of you and Louisville old even though they're idiots and don't look they have the right of way. Billboards warning you of how many people were hit in Chicago by cars last year. When I was up there it was over 3,000. The problem is the pedestrians. As I told my daughter's growing up yes you do have the right way in a crosswalk. Let the car go. Maybe right but you'll also be dead.

@@randyab9go188 Since I grew up in the area, the area expressways, or even driving downtown, doesn't bother me. I have seen more "4 lane cut across" numbers to get to an exit in other cities than around here, but, you have to still expect the unexpected. And although pedestrians do have the proverbial right of way in a marked crosswalk, if they take the chance of stepping off of a curb in front of someone intently playing with a "electronic entertainment device", they may become a Darwin award winner by thinking they are in the right as well.

This reminds me of when I tuned around on my clock radio late at night back in the 70s. From central Illinois I could get anything from New York, New Orleans, Texas, Denver to Minnesota. But could not get anything west of the Rockies. Also that station that kept fading out reminded me of listening to Art Bell back in the 90s, right when it got interesting it would fade out!

I recently built an AM transmitter that outputs about a hundred milliwatts into which I built in an mp3 player module that supports up to a 128g card/stick. I loaded a bunch of cards with different stuff, from favourite music, full albums, live shows, one hit wonders right through to Wolfman Jack shows, Casey Casem, even various movie scores. I just let it run 24/7 on random play and never get sick of hearing any of it. The power level keeps reception limited to my own property, but now many of my old restored AM radio's get used a lot more than they ever did, mostly because of the garbage they say and play now. It's not HiFi, but then it never was, but there is still a sound to it that I like.

Hi Shango, Great episode Sir! That San Diego station is KCBQ 1170 50KW days 2900 watts nights now. That station is historic as. The call letters were dedicated to the fact that in the golden days they were a CBS affiliate(KCBQ-CBS). The station was also of note in the Top-40 days as the first Q-Format a very tight top-40 format which was copied by a lot of others including stations in Los Angeles most notably KKDJ/102.7 now KIIS-FM. I too am saddened by what has happened to radio due to deregulation. In the old days the rule was 7 AM/7FM/7TV stations now 7 companies own everything. Thanks F.C.C. They will wreck tv as well unfortunately. Take Care and I really look forward to seeing these videos! Thanks for doing them.

Totally feel you, Shango. Here in Houston, some HD stations recently shut off their multicast channels and turned off Artist Experience (album cover art). There's a general decline in radio, and this time might actually be the beginning of the end of terrestrial radio. Satellite and the Internet are where all the focus is, so terrestrial radio as we know it is on its way out.

1170 KCBQ - they run 50kw during the day, but they put most of that signal out over the fishes from an array way east of the city. One of Salem Radio's properties, they are nicely conservative. 940 XEMMM - only runs 1kw days/100 watts after dark. Decent high-angle dx catch originating across the border from El Centro. As I always say, you cant go wrong with Motorola gear, esp vintage stuff. Never had a radio of theirs I didn't like. Happy with my Motorola smartphones as well.

He's killing it on You Tube. All the folks thinking they need a shelter and AM radio for when the bomb drops demonstrate how little they teach physics in high school. You ain't gonna care about stinking radio for years and years.

I saw one of these on ebay and they had a different Motorola logo on the left side. Also saw one with a grey or white case also with a different logo. Couldn't tell which color the case was because it's really dirty.

Its CAs insistence on specialized auto fuel which is causing the problem. They don't allow it to be made in the state so its being bussed in from the middle east on huge pollution belching tankers which make far more pollution than the special gas prevents and gives CA such high gas prices.

3:27 It's interesting that "MADE IN USA" is posted so prominently. I'll venture a guess that it was made around the time (1957ish ??) that the Japanese brands were moving in and some domestic names (RCA??) were moving their production to Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Can't remember the last time I heard I Robot on FM, nevermind AM - and with the intro yet? They never do that. Seems you gotta drive out in to the dessert to find AM worth listening to. When I DX on the winter nights it's all political talk radio and religious wingnuts. Your song was from Love & Rockets.

Almost forgot. There used to be a Mexican station that had a super strong transmitter that would open its broadcast day playing the National Anthem of Mexico. Picked it up near the Malibu pier. Played mostly rock on the overnights in the mid 80’s. Any sign of it still? Forgive not recalling the frequency or call signs. But FM.

Interesting that in this episode Shango is completely unconcerned about KZfaq recognizing the copyrighted music.

I find it rather strange that such a sparsely-populated area has so many FM radio stations. Back in the 1970's, I lived near Prescott, Arizona (pop. 35,000) and it didn't have a single FM station. The entire band was white noise. (Don't pick up that turtle. It might be one of those snapping turtles with razor-sharp teeth. Those things can bite your nuts off so fast you won't even know what hit you. At least that's the way they were back in North Dakota.)

There may be a new sport similar to DX'ing, involving keeping track of all of the pirate radio stations popping up on the left coast. Seeing that the guvment is too worried about roads being ray-cyst, they seem to be ignoring anything else, like, actual on the book law violations.

Why do underground RF casting when you can put content on the Internet with no hassle and a world wide audience?
@danielknepper6884
@danielknepper6884 Жыл бұрын
@@directcurrent5751 I wouldn't say you could do it with"no hassle". just look at all that shadow banning that's going on , not to mention censorship. If you do not align with their ideology your message will not get out. That is painfully obvious in this day and age.

@@directcurrent5751 The "interwebs" are politically controlled , patrolled and filtered for comments, with the broadcaster more likely than not leaving an IP trail . Pirate AM and FM broadcasts are harder to track, and take a concerted effort to locate, that is seemingly not prioritized at this moment.
