November 3, 2019. What a beautiful day it was in Portland, Oregon today and to ride Chuck's 1962 Norton 650/SS was a real thrill! I've admired Chuck's bike for many years. It's one of my favorite bikes in the oNe (Oregon Norton Enthusiasts) club. It's so quintessentially Norton with the understated black and silver paint scheme.
Quite honestly, when I bought the Manxman, I didn't realize that it was the first Manxman and had an idea of making it look a little something like Chuck's or this beauty owned by Jay Leno
Jay Leno’s 1962 Norton 650/SS
• 1962 Norton 650SS - Ja...
It's only after I discovered that my new bike is the first Manxman did I appreciate that I have a moral obligation to restore it to the original factory colors instead (polychromatic blue with a red seat and high bars).
Here's a link to an earlier video on Chuck's bike:

Back in my 20's I had a 750 Atlas as my only transport for about 5yrs . I constantly blew head-gaskets until I went to solid-copper . Older guys would come up and talk about the bike. (damn...thats Me now ! ) All the Old-Norton-Guys told me that the 650/SS was the better-bike . Thanks for another great bike Mike and good-on Chuck for finding a way to keep riding . Dave NZ

Lovely ride. Almost hypnotic once you got into rhythm with the road. Very interesting Gold Wing conversion your friend has.Nice of you to exercise his old 650. But who can say no on such a fine day?

Hi Kevin. Thanks very much for your note! Would you believe it, I watched it about 10 minutes ago. I’m off work sick today and have been binge watching KZfaq videos! I would be honored to visit Jay Leno‘s garage one of these days :-) Hope all is well, Best wishes Mike

Thanks for the ride along. That's a fine bike. Pictures of an older Dommie wideline in some late '70s issue of the British mag "Classic Bike", including a centerfold, were what got me kinda hooked on Nortons in the first place, though I've never managed to get a featherbed, only an ex-police 750 Commando Interpol and one of those N15CS 750 "Desert Sled" hybrids with the Atlas engine in a Matchless frame that they did for the American export market back before the 2-strokes began really dominating desert racing. Maybe one of these days... It's hard to say from here, but something sounds ever so slightly amiss with Chuck's, like the carbs are just a tad out of balance or perhaps the ignition system (magneto?) is just wanting a bit of dressing or minor adjustment. It just sounds a wee bit "lopsided" to my ear. As for the lack of choke he mentioned early in the video, neither of my Nortons even had the choke slides installed in their Amal Concentrics either by the time I got a hold of 'em. I was always led to understand that they were just an unnecessary rattly annoyance that many, if not most, folks yanked out and punted into the trash bin. I never needed or missed 'em, even in the dead of winter. Lastly, those "training wheels" on Chuck's other ride are kind of spiffy and something to keep in mind, as none of us is getting any younger, right?.

Thanks a lot Bill. Great comments about the bike. Yes, I think it needs a little work. It's been off the road for some time and probably just needs a little tune-up. It hasn't been started in some time but I was really surprised how quickly it started. It also ran very well but I could tell it needed a little attention as it spluttered a few times. Yes, those additional wheels help Chuck a lot, well except when trying to avoid manholes! Hope all is well, Cheers Mike

Nice bike indeed. I wish I never sold my 69 commando years ago. It was an R model that came with those same atlas style mufflers. Unfortunately the previous owner before me got rid off them, and without the internet at that time, I never knew what model it actually was.

There's a bike to be proud of, beautiful condition. I wish you could get a sensible front mudguard (fender?) like that for bikes now. In the soggy UK that would make a difference. What an unusual arrangement on your friends Goldwing. Do those small wheels tilt or is it like having a sidecar?
@TheMightyGarage
@TheMightyGarage 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Geoff, yes the Goldwing arrangement is quite funky. They do tilt. When Chuck told me he was converting it into a trike, I thought three wheels, not four!

Lovely bike, and a nice video. It's too bad that Norton cheaped out on paint, seeming to paint everything silver. It's a nice color, but it gets a little boring. I had an Atlas project, but had to sell it. When I sat on the Atlas, dreaming of a ride, I was struck by its small size. It was interesting to hear you remark on that aspect. I do have a.question: I heard the pushrods clattering, of course, but I seemed to hear a grinding noise. Are my ears deceiving me? Again, it's a neat bike.

I have a 1964 650 dominator.It use to be my father's.I'm looking at getting it on the road.Looking for a place to order a new set of handle bars and bar end mirror.Im also curious if you can just order the insert for the mirror that goes into the bar.

I have a mirror but no insert.I just had to ask.It would be nice just to be able to ask someone questions. My dad and I use to race a 750 commandos .I raced and he help work on it. When he passed I won 2 races with out him. The track started to steer away from old bike racing so I guess it was the end.If I could ask you question it would be great.I'm in nova scotia 🇨🇦.

Hi Andrew, thanks a lot for your notes. A lot of the guys in the club have Napoleon "baren" bar end mirrors. I bought them mine as a pair on eBay or Amazon. I think the product number is AP1O1. They are very good, I would definitely recommend them. I don't know if you can just buy the inserts. You could probably buy a cheap mirror and then try to use the insert for your mirror? Best wishes, Mike

With that tank, isn't it a Nomad??
@TheMightyGarage
@TheMightyGarage Жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, it might possibly be the same tank as a Nomad and also the later ES2. The Nomad also didn't have the slimline feathered frame. This 650SS has a shorter tank with the vanity skirt along the bottom and the same as its predecessor, the Manxman. It's quite a bit smaller than the later Atlas tank and the seat and rear fender/mudguard are also slightly different to accommodate the smaller tank. Cheers, Mike
