“The 1963 National Football League Championship Game was the 31st annual championship game, played on December 29 at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois. The game pitted the visiting New York Giants (11-3) of the Eastern Conference against the Chicago Bears (11-1-2) of the Western Conference.
Originally, NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle asked Bears owner/coach George Halas to move the game to Soldier Field for its higher seating capacity and lights, as the game could extend into multiple overtime periods. (Wrigley Field was not lighted until 25 years later, in 1988.) Soldier Field was the home field of the Chicago Cardinals in 1959, and became the home of the Bears in 1971.
When Halas refused, Rozelle moved the game's starting time up an hour to 12:05 p.m. CST for increased daylight, similar to 1960 at Franklin Field. The championship game was played in temperatures under 10 °F.”

Hardly anyone here remembers that George Allen was DC for the Bear's defense. After this game the Bears awarded Allen the game-ball. Teams wanted to hire him for HC but George Halas was so much in control of the NFL he held on to Allen for another 3 years.

This game kicked off at Noon CST. They had no choice because Wrigley had no lights. The league asked Halas to move the game to Soldier Field but he refused.

Back in the days when the NFL allowed the players to play defense..Tittle took a beating ..the low hits by Larry Morris are illegal today...the defense was allowed to block and chuck the receivers until the QB released the ball....I run across alot of Bear fans ..but not alot remember the 63 team and a surprisingly number actually think Dick Butkus played on the team...nobody remembers HOFer Bill George..who actually played MLB..alot of Bear fans today wrote off HOFer Doug Atkins because he never played in a Super Bowl...WOW!!.....I guess the greatest of all time is the players who play today..

Giants got all the momentum reversing calls, and Bears still prevailed. O'Bradovich and the defense (5 picks on the day) set up the offense so even they couldn't be denied. Look close and you'll see Bill Wade in Converse high top Chuck Taylor's.

Four degrees F that day, they say. I remember how bitter cold but very sunny it was that Sunday after Xmas. And Y.A. Title bruised and bloodied by the Bears' defense. 1963-64 was a great time for Illinois teams: Illini win Rose Bowl, Loyola NCAA champs, then Bears. Great time except for John F. Kennedy tragedy. Remember that all too well. and where I was when I (we) heard the terrible news: seventh grade English or Latin class. Came over the intercom. Time stopped. Saw Y.A. and Frank Gifford and Giants beat Cardinals on 11/3/63 at Busch Stadium.Had no clue about what was to happen on Nov.. 22. But then on Feb. 9, 1964: The Beatles on "Ed Sullivan Show"

@Aaron Digby Giants fans likely know better than I do, but after 1963, Allie Sherman traded lots of their great players. He saw them as past THEIR prime. Only, many weren't. Sam Huff played six more years with the Redskins. Tittle no longer had the supporting cast that won titles for the Giants and he took a good beating back in the pocket in '64, when the Giants only won two games. In the Chicago game, Bears knocked Tittle out of the game - wrecked his knee.

@@balrog322 Ha. A few things we had on the field back then besides strutting around after stopping a guy for a 1 yard gain near the goal line, after letting their team drive 80 yards down the field, were, no nets behind the goal posts (wild skirmishes for FG and extra point balls), no timeouts for commercials and no instant replays (meaning a better game flow). As a lifelong California denizen, I doubt I’ve ever attended a sporting event when the temperatures dropped below 50 (excepting night games at Candlestick Park) let alone 4 degrees and a wind-chill factor of -11. ‘63 Bears still one of the best defenses in NFL history, better than the ‘85 Bears on a ppg basis.

@@balrog322 Yes, that was the coldest game I went to at Wrigley and that D was great. A different style back then of course, where practically anything went, but the players were generally not as big/strong/quick. Bill Wade's kid went to my grade school -- Swift -- and they lived in a middle class apartment down the block. Most players worked off season jobs to make ends meet. Weight room? Probably not. I've tried looking for myself in the stands (South end zone) from films during 62-66, when we had season tickets, (Sayers and Butkus in 65', that was exciting) but there was no HD back then. :) Thanks for giving me an excuse to spout off.
