This commercial has been previously uploaded onto youtube, but this is an HD version with much better color quality. Some facts about this commercial. The car had no engine and drive train. It was brought to the rock by Helicopter in three pieces, chassis, front clip and body and then assembled by Chevy Technicians. In the commercial, you see the model, but you don't see is the Chevy Technician laying on the floor to simply give her moral support. This is over 7,000 feet high. Two Helicopters were used. Additionally, when the winds picked up during the commercial, the Helicopter wasn't able to land on the rock and the model and Chevy Technician and other safety and rescue folks had to stay on top for several hours until the winds died down and everything one could b e brought down.

I hope that model was paid an obscene amount of money for doing that commercial. AND be given a new Impala convertible. She sure earned it!

My dad lived next to her when he was growing up in Denver. Her name is Shirley Rumsey and she had 3 kids my father would play with. He seems to recall that she DID get an Impala :)

My father just mentioned this commercial to me recently. They did film the process of getting the car up there. (As well as the commercial, of course!) They took the car up in three sections using a Piasecki H-21 (Boeing Vertol H-21) helicopter. The filming around the car was done with a “ball” turret that was mounted on to the side of a Bell 47 helicopter. My Father worked as a producer for Campbell Ewald, the advertising agency contracted by Chevrolet to lead this project. My Father worked at Campbell Ewald in the early to late 60’s and participated in the production of this commercial. I’ll have to ask him about it again. I think he has a copy of the original film version of this. The model in the car was from Denver. He told me what her name was, (Shirley Rumsey ) and that she had three kids. I’ll have to get the name of the camera rigger who set up all the cameras for the shoot. Dad said the camera rigger had to hide in the trunk of the car during the scene takes. I told him I’d look for the commercial here on you tube and here it is!

My family watched Bonanza every week. NBC moved Bonanza to Sundays at 9:00 pm Eastern with new sponsor Chevrolet. In those days a popular show would have only one sponsor. That is the 1964 Chevrolet Impala, which was introduced with this ad on Bonanza in the early fall of 1963. This is the Only ad I remember from my childhood. It stuck with me for 60 years, until I found it here on KZfaq. This is a wonderful restoration. Much better visual quality then the first one I saw a decade ago.

Thanks, the color is a bit off, but the HD brings out the details you'd never see in a Broad Cast over TV air waves.....you can see the face of the model.....everything is so clear....thanks....I was so happy to find a long version negative to use to restore......it's not an easy find.

That looked soooo dangerous, especially with the car perched on the edge. Every time i look at this posting I get acrophobia. I don't know how the model did it. She must have been a stuntwoman with nerves of steel.

Come on, really. It's perfectly safe once the car was set and secured. It's not like she's just gonna fall out of the car and roll 12' off the edge. Its just high, that's all

Steve Roper, in his book _Fifty Classic Climbs of North America,_ mentions that the production crew left quite a bit of lumber on the summit of Castleton Tower, and that when he and Chuck Pratt did the second climbing ascent of the Tower, he (Roper) used the lumber to spell out a few profane words to express his displeasure with the littering.

I remember this commercial all too well. Either Life or Look magazine had a small pictorial showing them lowering the model from a helicopters rope ladder onto the scene. She was wearing some sort of protective outfit. I would not have been able to do this shot. Way too high up for me.

I throw up just thinking about being that high up in a car with winds from the Helicopter.....there was a guy in the car too, laying on the front floor to keep her calm.....the amazing part was the winds whipped up and they were stuck up there for hours before they could safely land the helicopter and take the folks down.

The camera work is really spectacular. It obviously was all done from helicopter. You can see the model's dress begin to flutter from the rotor blast as it approaches for the close-ups. The shots are remarkably stable considering this was decades before steady-cam technology. I imagine they would have used a panavision camera hung on a drop-gimbal mounting to eliminate sway.

Agreed, but, part of the "shake" is gone due to the restoration process and stabilizations features in the software......so when you see these restored commercials, they are basically better than ever seen before in terms of stability and clarity HD. Color...that's always hard to get right from the negatives condition.

Fun fact: immediately after this shot a massive storm rolled through, it was too dangerous to hover the helicopter to land it so they told the model to ride the storm out in this impala

It would be considered too crazy these days but they did it in 1964??? We can at least use drone to film it but the helicopter should carry the car anyways so still very dangerous.
@OsbornTramain
@OsbornTramain 3 жыл бұрын
The car was carried up in segments and pieces and assembled on the rock, It didn't have an engine in it. There's a video out there that shows the actual process of how it got up there. You don't see but there was a man in the car under the dash board giving the young woman comfort...…...when the winds picked up they were trapped up there for several hours, the Helicopter couldn't land on the top due to the winds....there's all of this documented history on how they filmed this commercial. I wish I could give you a link but don't have it handy

How would that have been done.......in 1963? In reality, there's no camera trickery at all in this commercial. Pieces of the car (without the engine and transmission) were lifted up by helicopter, then bolted together to make it look like a complete car. Model was helicoptered in, and another copter with a gimbel camera took all the film.
