A Beautiful 1964 Gibson Melody Maker D Guitar with the original Gibson Softshell Case
What we have today is a beautiful all Mahogany Gibson Melody Maker D which is for double Pickups. It is all original including the Gibson Soft Shell Case. The accessory box top is missing but all the hinges, latches and original handle are there. A very nice case. The knobs and pickups are original as is the pickguard.
This is not the short scale model Melody Maker. This one has a 24 1/2 inch scale neck and the original nut measures 1 11/16 inch. A couple small dings on the nut, but its still serviceable so we left it alone. Nice medium C profile on the neck. This is the thicker profile, not the skinny one.
The guitar has small dings and scratches to be expected in a 1964 guitar but no unusual dings. Only superficial cosmetic things. It has a lot of finish crazing which every vintage guitar collector looks for. Indicates the original nitrocellouse finish. Some finger divots in the top couple of frets that do not affect play or sound at all. We also repaired a break on the pickguard. See pic 7. No other mods on this beauty at all!
The guitar plays great with easy playing low action. The original frets have a lot of life left in them. The neck angle is great and it plays fanstastic. The sound of these single coil Gibson Pickups is really nice. A warm P90 sound from the neck and the bridge will get your attention. In the middle pickup setting you can adjust the amount of each pickup volume which gives this guitar great versatility in sounds.
The case is as nice as the guitar. All latches hinges and original handle are still with it. Only the accessory box lid is missing. Check those pics. These cases are getting very very scarce!
