I had one exactly like it, even same blue color, that I bought in the fall of 1964. It was my first new car and I wish I still had it. It cost about $1800 then.

Actually, 1962 was the first year for the gas gauge in the bugs. I owned a '61 and two '62's (among other bugs). My dad also owned a '60. One had to turn a reserve tap in the pre-'62 if s/he ran out of gas. It would give you the last gallon of gas to get s/her to a gas station.

I don't know why they think that's a 1964, there are things that are wrong for a '64, that radio antenna for example isn't 1964, I don't know the exact year, but it's earlier than '64. Also, the Volkswagen emblem on the bonnet, that wasn't 1964 either. The tail lights are wrong also, they're a little too small for 64. My first car was a '64 in that exact same color, I knew that thing inside and out. I don't know what year this is, but it's pre 1964.

THE RESERVE TANK LEVER WAS ONE OF THE COOLEST ITEMS ON THE OLDER BUGS.....IT MADE THEM VERY UNIQUE. I DONT REMEMBER A 'VOLKSWAGEN' NAMEPLATE ON THE HOOD OF THE OLDER BUGS.

Very nice , I had one in 1989 I paid 1200 for it. It looked exactly like your but red , and 6volt . I regrets selling it now that there worth 1000's

The Volkswagen logo belongs on the back of the car - not on the front. The first year for VW fuel gauge was 1961 - not 1964. Not sure what that middle knob is on the dashboard - Beetle's only had 2 knobs up top...lights on the left and wipers on the right. Perhaps, a manual choke was added?

64 never had any logo. Ist emblem was a 1300 on a 66 on rear. Volkswagen logo 1st appeared on 67 rear deck. Cheers!

I disagree...my old 61 did not have a fuel gauge, just the reserve lever ON the floor-board in front.

They had a lever in the floor board that was like a reserve of about a gallon which would get you to a gas station. Primitive I know. I think the first year they had gas gauges was 1962

There are a number of incorrect items here: Pep-Boys add-on plastic chrome trim around lower lip of license plate light housing. 1967 only flat rubber radio knobs, not 1964, after-market front bumper with incorrect grommets and bolts (Original German blade type bumpers were thicker and stronger), front seats are simply called "low-backs", they are NOT bucket-seats, incorrect style door panels do not match interior, red painted gas cap (why?), non-stock plastic adhesive chrome strip along roof drip gutter edge, incorrect front "Volkswagen" emblem (1956-9), incorrect hood adjustment, inoperative door position stops, original authentic steering was black, not white, the rear gravel guard is incorrect for a 1964 Beetle,. What is that oval decal next to the left rear tail light? Actually the paint finish looks rather dull to me. Appears to be a stock distributor only with electronic ignition. The rest of the engine compartment and engine rebuild is anybody's guess. And, that's just from what I can see in his walk-around. I wonder if anyone who buys this for $13k will know what they are buying?

I noticed that everything in the door jams got painted, for example, see the door light switch and it's gasket. That's one of the first things I look for and if found, indicates a very poor or sloppy restoration in my opinion.
