1965 Dodge Dart, How to Open a Trunk on a Car that Doesn't Have Keys Without Damaging Anything

The Keys on this '65 Dodge #Dart GT are long lost to time and it's not uncommon to get these old cars without keys because they've been lost in the mix, so what do you do to get that trunk open to see what's hiding in there! Well, the 1st thing most people do is to grab the pry bar or screwdriver and pry out the lock cylinder causing hard to fix damage to the trunk lid. And as you probably know, this #Mopar stuff is getting hard to find, and it's spendy as all get out when you do find it. So, to keep your #BudgetBuild on budget, sometimes it pays to get into that trunk from a different direction to save you time, money and endless amounts of frustration.
Hope this helps some of you out there and keeps more of these American Made Classics on the roads they were built for!

Boy I hear ya man. People don't realize just how hard it is to fix that once they've pried the heck out of it, and beat the crap out of it with a hammer.... ug

I'm glad to see that we are from the same old school. When in doubt, remove the back seat. People right away bust out the look and damage the trunk/deck lid and don't even consider rekeying the locks. My old lock smith charged 10 bucks to rekey it for me. Great work as always!

I hear ya man!; and fixxing that truck lid after they've beat the hell out of it isn't easy. All I can do is shake my head.... because it's so easy to just go through the other way and save you a ton of time and money in the end.

Great video! I have had to drill out a few mopar trunk locks in the past, most recent was a 65 belvedere, had so much stuff in the trunk I couldn't get to it with the seat out! I've never taken the latch off like that before though, I always stick a screwdriver in the slot in the latch and open them. Thanks for sharing this video, I've saw so many that folks have butchered and destroyed by not doing it the right way!👍

Thanks Mitch! Yeah, I couldn't get all the way in there to pop that horseshoe clip with a screwdriver, so I took every extension I have and just undid the latch instead... lol. I've seen so many trunk lids just totally destroyed by people prying and hammering on that poor lock cylinder... and it's only a few bucks to have a lock smith cut you a new key for it.

and the sad thing is..... when I got it out of there and took it to Mel's Lock & Key to have a key made for it.... it was under $5, and the key works in the doors as well. (sorry about the late reply, looks like yt held them and dumped them again)

I remember when I was a kid, my uncle locked his keys in the trunk and went through the back seat. I don't remember what kind of car it was, but didn't take much to get it opened. Good job Sir. One thing about the head, the same head was used on the 170 (1960 - 1969) 198 (1970- 1979) and the 225 (1960 - 1987) . Wait, I think in 1984 Chrysler went to hydraulic lifters and they changed the head. As well.

Thanks Bert. Yeah I don't know how many times I've seen a trunk lid destroyed by people prying and hammering that lock cylinder off out of there... ug As for the head.... I think that's the reason this thing went off the road, but now the bad thing is.... it's been off for a long time now. The cylinder walls don't look too good, and I can see where someone has beat on them trying to free it up.... ug. I hate it when an engine is popped open and left outside to the elements. I have my feelers out for another Slant, but they are extremely rare around here. Today I looked it over pretty good, and Worse Case Scenario... I think I can do "bolt in bolt out" mods to it, to get something else in there as I slowly rebuild the Slant. Just something to get it on road for now without cutting and welding so when it's ready for the OEM I can pull it to drop everything back in as it was..... I don't know, depends on what I can come up with as time allows. But I'm really hoping to keep it as it is.

Did you check the back of the back seats? That's where a lot makers or whatever used to put the build sheet, check the under the bottom of the back seat and the back of the back seat. I'm sure you probably thought about that, just making sure buddy!

If I remember correctly; on my 1962 Valiant, I would push the seat backward & down to clear the front clips. Is this correct?

This is the first time I saw this video and I wondering if you might have found the build sheet for that car. I know Chrysler used to hide them under the seats sometimes.
@BareRoseGarage
@BareRoseGarage 2 ай бұрын
Yeah it was mostly there, the mice got about half of it though... Same with that 68 Mercury. I keep them around for covo pieces but other than that I don't pay them much mind. By the time I'm done with them they are pretty far from the build sheet lololol

You can often put enough very long extensions together that you won't even need to get into the trunk. It's a breeze. Pinning your new lock or getting keys made is easy too. Don't be afraid to learn how
