The left stick is the main transmission and the right stick (in nb this case, Mack's are reversed) is the auxiliary transmission which "splits" or divides each gear in the main 2, 3, or 4 times. Real old school truck drivers, once started, put their left foot on the floor and drove the truck with their right foot and their hands. If you had to kick the clutch pedal in a B81 twice for every shift you would be a cripple for life.

Drove for a local water haulage firm ( straight trucks. ). Old truck in the back of the shop, v- 6 gas with a 5 x 4. And yes, the reported pro method was left arm hooked through wheel, and go. Rumour says drivers didn't last long with twin sticks and Detroit Diesel two strokes. That part about slamming your hand in the door first to be mad enough to wring it's neck properly was a problem, you see..

Miss them days of driving & shifting those main/auxli transmissions. A 40 hr. work-week with my local municipality driving a KW-900 2-stick w/low-boy trailer. On the weekends (16hrs. give or take) with my own 1970 Pete 2-stick truck tractor, pulling a water-tanker, hauling scrap metal, derelict vehicles, and milk-cattle manure. Nowadays, I'm semi-retired and still driving, a 2019 Pete auto-shift 5k fuel tanker., no shifting at all. Not gonna lie, I love driving trucks, but I do miss shifting them gears. LOL!

When did they do away with the strip down the middle of the hood? My 62 has it with the early style fiberglass hood. Then they went to the A model cab in about 64 and still had a kind of narrow radiator which was wider than the early fiberglass but still narrower than a regular A model. Then they had the regular A model with a wide hood. And I don’t know when they changed to the rib being built into the fiberglass, which does not look anywhere near as good.
