Jean Shrimpton (the model known as '"The Shrimp."
caused huge controversy in 1965 by wearing a miniskirt to Derby Day in the lead up to the Melbourne Cup.

I wouldn't care, but the skirt wasn't even that SHORT, for goodness sake! My wife still wears them shorter than that, and she's 66.

It doesn't look like a mini skirt. It looks like a really conservative business casual dress of average length! It looks like a classic Audrey Hepburn dress. I think just a year or two later, Twiggy was wearing really tiny micro-minis and no one cared about that! Melbourne seemed conservative even in the 80s, and even today.

It was shocking for the time and place for an adult dress to be so short it showed your knees. She also had NO HAT, no stockings, no gloves. The look of the 60s debuted that day in conservative Australia, a swinging girl, young, free and beginning to discard the proprieties of older times.

I was in grade 7 in Fiji. I remember this radio broadcast. Never forgot Light Finger won 1965.

Mary Quant introduced the real mini skirt! This Dior ensemble was so mild compared to micro minis that appeared shortly after this.

Only it wasn't Dior , they were outfits she had made using the sponsor's material Orlon that she was out here to promote . They quickly bought her stockings and a hat for the next 3 outfits .

Jean was stunning and a class lady ,.today's women just let it all hang out and let's be honest,,they just don't measure up,.seriously I would want a potential wife to be more like Jean Shrimpton then the over sexualised over masculine women we have today..Jean is and was a one off!!

Yes they did..because they SHOWED what was the difference of the FASHION LAST 50s and 60s(when Jean Shrimpton represented SWINGING LONDON ERA)for her wearing short skirts...:) It maybe RACIST last time in Melbourne :( but it was really ICONIC

Aha, now I see the 3D version of Melbourne Cup legendary Pretty Baby Jean from this video rather 2 D photography. Again, this British Baby still very slim and very modernized even right now that all attired and the garment she wore from head to toes were all sponsored by high street brands. This simple but stylish free classic still can standout in 21 Century Melbourne Cup forever..........STF..........
