I have been asking about this little Nova Wagon for about 4-5 years now. The owner finally decided it was time to see it go to a new home. We were blessed to have had the opportunity to rescue it from the depths of the dirt weeds and junk. Its pretty roasted, but still a great time pulling her out!

Turned 16 in '79. Got my driver's license, bought a '64 Nova wagon from our next door neighbor, for $100. Inline 6, 3 on the tree, no radio. Had to replace water pump and the tires eventually but other than that, served me well. Installed an 8 track tape player, bolted a circuit breaker box door over a hole in the drivers floorboard, drove it for 2 years, sold it for $250. Wish I still had it.

My wife and I have started doing the same thing. Before we got married I was always into the rescuing these pieces of American history. The imagination and ingenuity I’ve seen there’s always a home for these old cars. Those out there with the sight to see more than just a pile of rust. I’ve seen cars that most would haul the the scrap yard turned into some of the wildest running pieces of plunder. They’re a constant reminder of a time where so much pride and craftsmanship was poured into these cars. My opinion the car industry could really use a big shot in the arm of what it used to be to make it great again. GOD bless you for your time and dedication, I’m glad my wife and I are not the only ones. To all those out there breathing life back into these old cars, let’s keep making rust buckets great again!!!

My parents bought a '65 Nova wagon, brand new, in the early part of 1965. It was blue, and was a base model. It had a heater, but no radio. Manual transmission, steering & brakes. It did not have the optional reverse lights, so there were metal plates instead of the backup lights on the tailgate. The car was in our family for eleven years; it was the car I learned to drive in. It was rugged and the simple engineering meant we could replace the clutch plate, install brake pads, perform tune-ups, mostly by ourselves. I have many fond memories attached to that car.

Those old stovebolt 6's were next to impossible to kill. We had one in our 67 Bel Air station wagon (which, believe it or not, was in even worse shape than this). My father had to strap the gas tank to the side of the rear fender by punching holes through it (the fender) and running those metal tension straps through the holes to keep the gas tank from falling out. Not sure if the tank was originally located someplace else (like the rear floor under the tailgate) but it ended up between the interior plastic moulding and the metal. Car had vise grips to open the doors (two vise grips) and windows, there were rubber mats put on the floors to keep the gravel from flying up and whacking him in the shins when he drove, there was more stuffing than vinyl on our seats, and the radio would zap you if you touched the knobs. Rad was kept alive with an egg periodically (it worked, but not well), and Ma's panty hose ended up being a temporary fan belt one fine evening when ours exited the engine bay. But despite ALL that rot (in Canada, salty roads will kill a car in pretty short order) that engine ran perfectly with zero maintenance (Dad wasn't one to change oil or fix anything, he'd just keep topping it up when he got gas) right up until he drove it to the junkyard after a cop ordered it off the road as being unsafe. Point? That old stovebolt might be seized up, but a little coca cola on the rusted bolts (or penetrating oil if you want to do it right...LOL), and I bet that thing roars back to life. In a little Nova wagon, it would be enough to get her going down the road, although it's no smallblock Chev by any stretch of the imagination.

my car has a derived engine of this kind, it' 1974 though... It had only 4 of cyls working and still had more torque than my civic LOL Now that it is fully rebuilt and with some more modern parts, it's much stronger!
@shopwornbear1171
@shopwornbear1171 3 жыл бұрын
@Bulitt Nose Apparently it garnered this name due to it's first generation of straight six engines having bolts on it that looked a lot like the bolts on a wood stove. The name just stuck and it was known as the stovebolt six affectionately for the length of it's manufacturing run. This is what I've been able to determine off Google anyway. If anyone knows more about it, please feel free to add to this. All I can tell you with certainty is that these engines were all but indestructible. You could starve them of oil, contaminate said oil with just about anything, and these damned things kept on chugging away. They were never fast engines, but they had a decent amount of torque, started up with little trouble in deep sub zero weather without needing a block heater to help them along (same can't be said for gas lines in the car, though. I live in Canada, and -40c weather would freeze up the toughest of cars, yet my Dad's old Chev always turned over, no matter how cold it got). Probably why Chevrolet kept making variations of this engine around the world for so many decades.

I just discovered your channel, Thank you for your service. I sometimes think people forget that these cars are not "classic iron" when they were parked. This was a worthless 14 year old wagon in 79. The storage conditions may not be ideal for the preservation of these vehicles, but at least it is still here for the right person to resurrect or use it's parts to save another. If anything the people complaining about it's condition should consider how many of these cars were sent to the crusher at 14 years old because of bad brakes or even smaller issues than that.

Like so many cars I see in the south, owner thinks I'm gonna restore that car someday, lets it sit outside unprotected, turns into a pile of rust. If they would have sold it to someone that begged for it 40 years ago it could have been a very easy restoration.
@alan6832

It wasn't hardly classic 40 years ago and 40 years of storage bay rent is awfully pricey! Some spray waxes and other protective coatings might have been helpful though. I didn't know they made Nova wagons. compact wagons are one of the most practical types, though the Corvairs have better traction than the Novas. Don't ruin the traction with a v8! In fact, if the engine is bad, you could improve the traction with an Iron Duke or even a Vega softbore.

@@alan6832 Nova's were cheap as were Chevelles, Camaro's and Mustanges back then but we all wanted them. In the mid 80's (when it was sitting but still together) the Nova II wagons were real popular and would have sold fast. In the condition its in I bet it sold today for less then they could have got for it back then, intact.

Same goes with boats. A rotted hull stripped of anything of value laying in the weeds behind a house...."well, you know, that's a classic I'm working on....." the boat hasn't been touched in 20 years and he's 87 and can barely walk with 27 other major "projects" laying around. "I can't let it go for less than ....." which is way more than a new boat of the same make. Drives me nuts.
