This was one of the coolest shoots we've had the opportunity to do. Jim Marietta is one of the original Shelby mechanics and we got to spend the day with him and talk about the 1965 Shelby GT350R he's recreated with Peter Brock and Ted Sutton built the way they originally designed including the independent rear suspension. This is the OVC Mustang.
Sit back and enjoy the stories and the ride...

You're looking at the arm of experience! Unfortunately, young people today generally couldn't drive a standard, and in any event, not with the talent displayed in this video - it's becoming a lost art.

It’s really one of the ultimate DRIVER’S cars. As in you have to DRIVE it, not let a bunch of computers and electronics move it down the road for you. I rode in a friend’s ‘65 GT-350 as a teenager in the late 80’s, and still remember the feeling to this day.

@autotopia LA exactly!! Nearly thirty years ago, I witnessed a couple of camorons talking shit about an absolutely pristine ‘68 Shelby GT500KR owned by a guy in the Mustang club I was in at the time. I had to ask them if they knew ANYTHING about vintage cars, as that particular car had been judged at about 98% at several SAAC shows in its day.

My first car was a 65 fastback 289 high performance. Many things were done to this car by a mechanic who knew his stuff. I did not know much about it at that time but it was a riot to drive. It was surprisingly fast and gave no quarter when put to task. The time I had it was 1970 and those were the days. You are fortunate to be there where these repros are made. Gone to heaven.

For those net experts who point to the first gen Mustang's lack of IRS as proof that the European car makers were ahead of the tech game in the 60s, they don't know what they're talking about. Ford DID have an IRS ready to go for the Mustang. As Mr. Marietta points out, there was no business reason to offer the IRS, since Ford was selling every Mustang they could build with the solid rear axle. Great vid, BTW. That engine sounds fantastic.

@MrSloika

@@AutotopiaLA Ford sold half a million Mustangs in the first model year. $15 X 500,000 = $7,500,000 Adjusted for inflation, $7.5 million is about $60 million in today's money. $60 million here, $60 million there, and pretty soon you're talking about real money.

@mrsloika some people just have to knock others to build themselves up and feel better. I’m a Mustang guy to the core, but I can appreciate a nice gm or mopar (I’ve never really dug euro or Japanese cars). Yet some people ONLY see ONE make or marque as having any validity. It’s really lame...

The old man can shift like you are suppose to shift a car like that. It gives me flashbacks when I was between 17 and 25 years old doing the same thing in some Fords I had back in the day. I've seen young guys that get into a pretty hot car and end up either missing a gear or grinding the shit out of one because they are timid and afraid of shifting it with power or scared they are going to break it. But it's always been about taking control of the throttle and clutch and making it go like you want and need to get somewhere fast. Shift it like you are trying to get away from someone after you stole it.

How incredible is must be to have been part of Shelby’s operation from the beginning. But to have that in your history AND then be part of this rebirth of the cars? That’s got to be mind blowing. The kind of stuff all us car junkies wish we could have experienced. I love the fact that they’ve done just a couple updates like the IRS and the rear window shape only because they are true to what was intended for the car. You’ve got one helluva cool job Shawn, thanks for sharing!

When I built my 66 GT coupe back in the 80's I weighed and reduced the weight of everything I could, the door weighed 40 lbs empty , with the glass and cranks 75 !! got mine down to 2700 lbs full of fuel. glove box door was about 5 lbs right there. lots of fun, even drilled the brake and clutch pedals. I drove the guy at the town dump crazy as he would weigh my car on the scale every so often, the fun thing was one day at moroso motorsports park I pulled up to the scale and some impatient but nice guys with fox bodies ran the scale for me, they were pretty surprised when the scale read 2650 lbs. kept the car 25 yrs but eventually the cowl rust and otherwise wear and tear on myself made me sell it. still miss it thought.

@Cameron Bates - The 289 used in The Daytona Coupe had 4 Webers, tuned headers and cranked out a whopping 390 HP. That "289" power gave the Coupe enough grunt to hit 197 MPH down the Mulsanne Straight.

Nothing winds like a small block Ford. And 390hp was a conservative detuned number to last 24hrs. 289's today crankout more than 500hp reliably NA and shift well above 8,000rpm
