I think this is the era of prime Harry. Carey's best called game I've heard is his final regular season game of 1964, Cards-Mets, with the division on the line. His homerism is funny and infectious rather than annoying, and he really makes the action come alive.

Some people who only knew Harry from his WGN Superstation days remember him as a beloved colorful character, but don't know what a great broadcaster he was when he was younger and in good health.

Terri henricks amen to that. Everyone wanted him to pursue the personal of happy go lucky, life of the party Harry in Chicago. Obviously, that made money for him, the Sox and the Cubs. But I still think he was at his best in St Louis. This was a guy who would also do U of Missouri football and basketball and the Cotton Bowl for CBS Radio. A pro all the way.

Frank Santore The way he was in St Louis, was the same way he was with the White Sox. Exciting, outspoken and critical. He was a completely different announcer when he went to the Cubs!

@@billslocum9819 Bill, it wasn't for the "division". . .There were no divisions back then. . .It was for the National League Pennant! . .By winning the game the Cardinals won the NL pennant and went directly to the World Series. I grew up in the 60's listening to Harry, and his style just made listening to the games fun, even in years when the Cardinals weren't very good. . .He just made it fun to listen to anyway. . .I think it's sad so many younger people only know Harry from his declining years (especially after he had a stroke) when he was with the Cubs. You're right, his Cardinal years were definitely his best!

maverick1956hk is entitled to his opinion, but Jack Buck was inducted into nine halls of fame, had a highway named for him in St. Louis, and there is a statue of him outside Busch Stadium. Obviously some people thought he was outstanding.

By then, Skip was 27 years old and working himself. While it’s possible Skip could have been assisting in the booth, Harry had a history of mentioning Skip during his broadcasts going back to Skip’s early childhood. Skip was teased about this growing up as one of the common things Harry would say around 8:30pm was, “Good night, Skippy.” My guess is the “Skip” mention here was Harry doing the same type of thing.

@@andyjackson4505 it appears that Skip was the voice of the St Louis Hawks and SLU basketball at this time. When the Hawks moved to Atlanta in 68 he moved with them. He didn’t become the Braves announcer until 76.

My dad was a St. Louis native so I know that accent. Julian Javier assisted on the first out. What a second baseman he was. Cardinal pitchers loved him for all the earnes runs he saved them.
