Very good move replacing the stock fuel pump with the electric one. But you should sincerely consider the following, some of which were noted by Rick Norris, who is a legendary Corvair mechanic and racer: Relocate the electric pump to the frame rail area below near the fuel tank because those pumps are "pushers", install a relay for the pump and consider an inertia safety switch that will cutoff the pump in the event of a collision and replace all rubber fuel lines that are inside the engine bay with metal lines. Rubber fuel lines inside of Corvair engine bays have been the cause of many toasted Corvairs.

Any documentation on rubber fuel line as the cause of toasted Corvairs? (that's what I figured)

I'm sure by now someone has told you an electric fuel pump in the engine compartment is not the best place for it. Also those pumps are designed as pushers not pullers which means they need to be as close to the tank as possible. And yes, those little bastards are noisy! I changed out the mechanical fuel pumps on every Corvair I have owned and others. I also use a relay kit to power them. Painless Wiring sells a very nice kit if and when you decide to redo the setup.

good move, and no more vapor locks. at least that fixed my problem. how do you like your 140 heads with basically a pair of 110 carbs? no secondaries? that doesn't make sense to me.

Very nice. Those who think that the fuel pump should shove rather than suck are apparently OK with a pressurized fuel line running under the car where it is subject to all sorts of road hazards. I do think a kinetic cutoff would be good, and very easily added to your set up. And the silly crap about heat and the fuel lines fails to note that if you have that much heat under the 'hood' you have bigger fish to fry, so to speak.

Just figured I'd point out that all modern fuel injected cars have the pump in the fuel tank and pressurized lines running to the engine. Much higher pressures with EFI too.

@@Primos003 Congratulations of your firm grip on the obvious. Similarly, all modern EFI cars are designed for 50+ psi and to contain that pressure in the event of a mishap. The Corvair was designed to endure a partial vacuum on its stem to stern hosed and tubes.

With the battery right next to the fuel pump you should have used a fuse and a relay to take any load of the small pink wire you spliced in to. Being an old Corvair owner I can appreciate the work of maintaining the mechanical and visual aspects of a nice Corvair like yours. Just be careful not to burn it down by possibly overloading an electrical circuit. A $10 ebay pump is not something I would bet my car on. At least a fuse would potentially stop that from happening. The pump may not draw many or any amps until it stops running for some odd reason like it's a cheap ebay pump. Just sayin.

That’s a great idea. If the pump fails it will probably be to much current for that small pink wire. I’ll add that relay in next time I tinker with the car 👍

Where did you get the fuel pump and what is the name of it?????

I hope that gauge isn’t an air pressure gauge. Fluid and air are not the same. Plus add fuel. Uh oh.

Air pressure gauge? It’s a fuel pressure gauge. And pressure is pressure. There is no difference in 10psi of fuel pressure and 10psi of air pressure

Hello! I recently bought my first car and it was a 1964 Corvair, and I was wondering if this would also work on my 64?

Hopefully you see this and I don’t have to ponder on it for too long but what did you do about the hole the mechanical pump left?

I just took the pushrod out, and placed the pump back on. So the pump is there and still plugging the hole. It’s just not operational 👍
